My biggest concern with the program re: coaches

And I would appreciate some feedback on this subject from Bayou and HSV...
My biggest concern is not an on the field coach, it is Rocky Colburn. I know that Saban tried to hire a S&C coach to come with him and the guy he wanted said no, so he kept Rocky. I was critical of Shula's firing of Ben Pollard, and until someone tells me otherwise I will continue to believe that it was because of an argument regarding the specifics of our S&C program (and what Shula wanted).

I did not like the direction of the program under Kent, and I have heard that Rocky is better than Kent was, but I am not sure that he is good enough. We have arguably the best S&C facilities in the nation. I really hate that the best S&C coach in the nation lives in Tuscaloosa but works 83 miles up hwy 82. I wish Saban would offer to add a zero to the end of whatever MSU is paying Ben to get him back.

Rocky ran a bad S&C program under Shula...I worry about his ability to implement a good one under Saban. Is my concern legit, or am I barking up the wrong tree?

From what I understand, RC now works under the auspices of the entire athletic dept and thus does not work under Nick Saban.

I'm the biggest Ben Pollard fan that there ever was. For all the bad things that I can think of to say about the Franchione years, we had one hell of a dominating o-line in '02 with Evan Mathis, Alonzo Ephraim, and the gang, and in my opinion Ben Pollard was greatly responsible for that. I went to one of the Night of Champions weightlifting that he administered and it was really neat. Add to that he loves our program and Tuscaloosa, and I really wish we had him on staff. My guess is he would take a paycut to give up the 85 mile one way commute to starkville....

If RC works for the AD, I would think that would make it easier for Saban to just hire his own guy.

Ben Pollard turned our OL into the best Bama OL in recent memory. Our QB's were even benching 300+ and squatting a 3rd world country. Had Pollard been retained and allowed to run things his way, I doubt Brodie would have had as many injuries or suffered as many sacks as he did.

Its probably no coincidence that our most productive year offensively under Shula was his first when there was some carry-over from Ben Pollard's influence. Firing him was one of Shula's biggest mistakes.

I admnit to knowing nothing about s and c, but if I remember correctly a lot of people on here were happy about the move. They claimed that his emphasis on strength over flexibility was causing injuries.

The biggest problem with both Johnston and Colburn was not those two guys themselves, but the fact Shula would not enforce discipline on the players who missed workouts.

That was Shula's greatest failure, in everything he did. I don't think he knew how to really get tough. The players didn't respect him. Many called him Sheila behind his back. He never gave anyone a reason to fear him or showed that he would enforce consequences upon those who disrespected his orders. Neither Johnston nor Colburn ever really had a chance.

It was the Mike DuBose era all over again, except without the great recruiting, or the Jerry Springer show going on away from the field.

I would just second everything Jess said. I'd add that the problem wasn't Shula alone. The position coaches would not monitor their players and stay with them in the weight room to make sure they did their routines. As you might suspect, the worst was CBC. The entire stay at Bama, he complained about the coaching duties interfering with his family and leisure time. He particularly hated the weight room, and his players showed it...

Well in my opinion the biggest problem we have right now is the mental aspect of the game is just not there. These players still have a horrible mentality and it is going to take a while for Coach Saban to get that mindset right. Coach Saban made reference to this during his post game presser. It was something I mentioned to my buddy during the game. I saw finger pointing on the field and players obviously were not giving 100% out there. Everything has just unraveled since the LSU loss. I don't think the players believe they have anything to play for anymore, since we can't win the West. I shudder to think what will happen next week.

This is pure conjecture, but we need more than one year to get back to dominating physically. I have a feeling that some of the guys are physically not much better than freshman because they have only one year of committed weight training. The jumbo package wasn't built in a day, and neither will a dominating offensive line.

Also, Saban probably has decided to red shirt Valchos and Crump who according to the depth charts are better than some of the guys that are forced into starting jobs right now.

as several posts have already alluded to it takes a little time for the "attitude" of a team to change when a new coach comes in who is night and day from the previous one. i think it takes time for the "leaders" of a team to know how to lead under a new regime. the infighting, effort and policing of themselves will slowly change in due time and all will be on the same page, i hope.

IMO..I think the problem is that you have a group of young men who had bought into what Saban is trying to do here, but they are the minority on this team. The cancer is still in the program, complacent, laziness, & just being damn right soft...it is going to take so time(Longer than I suspected) to get a group of young men who actually want to play some ball, want to hit you in the mouth, & take pride in wearing the crimson jersey.

Listen to the 2 words CNS is always saying..."Finish & Toughness"

Shocking that someone with CBC's attitude would ever sign up to coach at Alabama.

If the players buy in and give it their all, Cochran will have us looking like quite good.

He is probably the craziest, most energetic person on the staff. :willy_nilly:

A strength coach can't put the desire in your heart to be the best you can be, he can only direct you how to do it. Shula recruited many playes who were not interested in being the best they could be, if you interviewed them they would all say they were, thats like asking someone if they want to win, what are they going to say? "no, it doesn't interest me that much". Actions and results reveal the truth. The strength program did pay benifits, we have been injured less, we have been better in the 4th quarter, but we haven't seen that "oh my god" sort of change where a player just steps out of the normal world and gets that NFL type body, that can ONLY come when a player wants it badly enough to push himself to the limit, go above and beyond what the strength coach demands, that sort of drive. The only way out of this is to recruit THOSE type players and coach them up.

Saban has NEVER failed to do that, he won't fail now. but it won't happen quickly, and their are more players who are going to have to change their attitudes or be replaced. Life's not fair, they might as well learn this now.

s&c is extremely important in football. i think these guys have no pride. they are soft and lazy. how can you look at the guy across from you in a game and know he is stronger/faster and be ok with that?

i sincerely doubt in the NFL, coaches "make" you work out. either you have the desire, or you dont.
