TM, I don't know if you play golf or not, but athleticism (especially hand/eye coordination) are very important in golf. Also, with the modern swing, the more athletic one is, the better he/she can swing the club with a large shoulder turn against a limited hip turn.
I used to play a LOT of golf before I got stuck in this wheelchair 9 years ago. I love the game and watch it all the time on TV. Golf is a skill, like darts, pool, etc. Michael Jordan was one of the best athletes on the planet during his prime and there were literally thousands of fat old guys in their 60's and 70's who could skin his behind on the golf course. When I see guys like Craig Stadler, Colin Montgomerie, Lumpy Herron and a bunch of other guys who jiggle when they walk, the word athlete never springs into my mind.
I won't deny that athleticism will make a golfer perform better, but that's generally true in just about anything. A fit and athletic roofer, painter, construction worker, firefighter, cop, etc would most likely perform better than a couch potato type, but that doesn't make them athletes.
