Who's Your Guess For The Bama QB in 2009

Regardless, we can expect a drop-off offensively in 2009. We will lose Caldwell and (probably) Andre to the NFL. Bring in a new QB with a new OL, and you've got problems in the SEC. Fortunately, the schedule brings most of our toughest games to Bryant-Denny, where we are slowly rebuilding a bona fide home field advantage.

2010 however, and 2011 after that, could be really special if the current staff stays together and recruiting continues to be dominant.

And Marlon Davis and two very underrated TEs.

It is obvious that Coach McElwain likes a very physical offense. JPW may not have all the talent in the world, but he is very tough and resilient. That being said, are Star, Darrah, and G Mc tough enough to be the #1 guy? I think the door may be open for a big physical player to get a look, i.e. Smelley.

Star Jackson took all his snaps from the shotgun position in HS so he is having to learn to take snaps from under center and until he does that consistently he will be behind McElroy and probably Darrah. Jackson has tons of talent and is impressing the coaches with his strength but he still has a ways to go before he is handed the keys to the Ferrari.

Yes, Star will be a RS freshman so he has time to get his shot. I agree with most that GMc will be the man unless he can't hold up his end.

Someone mentioned in an earlier post that McElroy was going to be a Senior next season. Not true. He is a redshirt Sophmore this year so he'll give us two more years.

With that said, I believe that he will give us our best chance to have balance on offense. We are going to have a spectacular stable of running backs so I don't really think that we need a scrambler as much as a pocket passer.

Just my .02.

I think we will see McElroy with Star getting significant playing time, and by the end of the season I bet Star takes it over....

This is in line with my thinking, though I'm not 100% confident Star takes over. Definitely GM to start the season.

And a side note to address the other discussion in this thread that has materialized: Will we be better or worse next year? I'd have to say slightly less successful than this year with growing pains at QB and along the offensive line. But hey, I'll take a 9-10 win rebuilding year after either playing in the BCS championship game or at least a BCS at large bid this year. Then we'll take the big one for sure in 2010 and maybe a repeat in 2011!!!!

Wow! Happy days are here again!!

More detrimental injury to team: Bama's JPW or Gators' Tebow?

Which would be the better team if both faced each other with the # 2 QB's. Is McElroy where he needs to be now to take over next year?

Re: More detrimental injury to team: Bama's JPW or Gators' Tebow?

imo i think that Bama would have the upper hand if we both lost our starters, i heard Saban say before the season started that McElroy actually new the offensive system better than JPW did, and i think he is more of a passing qb than JPW

Re: More detrimental injury to team: Bama's JPW or Gators' Tebow?

Shudder... I don't even want to think about that. :eek2: JPW isn't a great QB, but he does what he needs to do - and he KNOWS what he needs to do.

I think many of you will be pleasantly surprised if Greg is ever called on. He can run the offense, and he's a winner.

no question loss of tebow would be more detrimental to the team's loss. urban meyer's system is predicated on the qb sooooo much. take tebow out of the equation and florida becomes a much less dangerous team than if wilson were knocked out of a game for Bama.

Re: More detrimental injury to team: Bama's JPW or Gators' Tebow?

Florida depends on Tebow's ability to make things happen, while we depend on Wilson to not make things happen. Their backup quarterback is probably better than ours, from the minimal amount of action I've seen of both, but since Alabama doesn't need JPW the way Florida needs Tebow... I like BAMA in that nightmare scenario.

Re: More detrimental injury to team: Bama's JPW or Gators' Tebow?

A Gator fan friend of mine thinks that their backup actually has a better arm than Tebow. They would definitely lose the QB draw from the Goal Line aspect of their game, but his opinion is that the running game with Demps and Rainey would be about the same and the passing game would be much improved. My impression was that Tebow was a pretty good passer, but he was saying there are LOTS of poorly thrown or overthrown balls.

I think we would be OK with McElroy, but either way I hope that we see McElroy with lots of reps in the Auburn game ;).

Since this ultimately is talking about GM's development, it's going to be merged.

Which QB is your friend talking about: Newton, or Bentley?

Greg McElroy is a tremendous talent at QB. He broke Chase Daniel's HS records and took his HS team to the State Championship of the highest classification in Texas. He hasn't played this year because the games have been competitive in the 4th qtr and the coaches have faith in JPW but Greg can perform if needed.
Greg may not be as good a runner/scrambler but Coach Leach wouldn't have wanted him for his pass happy offense if he wasn't a terrific passer.
I look for GM to start next year as CNS and CJM groom Star, AJ or Darrah to step in when needed.

That said, I have heard (from a practice observer) that Bama will be a "different team" when Star takes over.......he is the real deal!!!
