NFL Considering Ban on Long Hair

The NFL is pondering whether or not to ban long hair. Personally, I think it should be done. There are a few players with hair that protrudes at least 6 inches out from under their helmets, which can interfere with them being tackled (grabbing the jersey up around the neckline), or it could lead to impaired performance once a player gets a giant clump of hair jerked out of their scalp.

All in all, I think players should not be allowed to have hair that comes out from under their helmets.

The League has rule, I believe, that tackling by grabbing the hair is legal, so wear your hair long at your own peril.
If I were a player in the league I would go out of my way to tackle a guy by his hair. It is just something else to grab onto.
 
When I read the title of the thread I thought that they were trying to cut down on helmets coming off during play, which I would love to see. One would think that if players with long hair puts all of their hair up in their helmet that the helmet would have a better chance of coming off during play.
 
I guess this would eliminate Troy Polamalu and Mike McKenzie. Of course, most of the receivers beat McKenzie so bad that his hair is not a factor!

Whats that got to do with 1957? Some people had long hair then as well. They also had it in 1797.(Wow-a shocker) The point is that these people WITH long hair are complaining about being tackled by their hair.The people that are grabbing for it are going by the rules. The NFL has to address it. Times change. :BigA: Get it?

Good point. I hadn't thought of that, but it is annoying and causes unneeded delays.
 
Has anyone ever been injured due to having long hair? Not that I can remember. So why the concern?

Blow out a knee, break a leg, injure your neck, and your career is over. Lose a handful of hair and join the Hair Club for Men. :biggrin:

Any information on former hairy headed NFL players who went bald having it pulled out? Could be interesting to say the least if it were passed by the owners.

Its 2008 and since NFL football began no one has been injured due to long hair.

An employer has the right to set acceptable appearance standards.

Haha, thanks for the brief history lesson, my comment was about the changing of standards in this country. In case it's blurry, in the late 50's and 60's people with long hair were ostracized by 'the establishment'...

Anyway, the point is this: why should the NFL make a rule banning long hair when the folks complaining about it have - tada - long hair? Do those geniuses need an NFL rule to make them cut their hair?
 
I think it's dangerous for a totally different reason. There's already been one player die from heat stroke with a head-full of dreads stuffed up into his helmet. Of course, I guess it's an advantage in December. In Green Bay... :D
 
Ridiculous idea! Why in the world would they be worrying about this? It seems so trivial to me. I've yet to see it become a problem so they should really focus on issues that really matter.

Surely this is going to be the issue to supplant the steroid media bonanza on the NFL front page. At least they have their priorities in order. Maybe they can't stop the players from using the "cream and clear", but they can dang sure see to it that they look good (in someone's eyes) while doing it.

Wow....just...wow. Maybe next they will go out and murder people after listening to their rap music? Or perhaps all of their tattoos will make them do drugs? Stereotype much?
