NFL commissioner Roger Goodell told ESPN on Saturday that college underclassmen considering the 2009 draft should not fear a new economic system being in place by 2010.

“There will be no change in our current system, at least until 2011,” Goodell told ESPN’s Chris Mortensen. “I’ve explained that to some college head coaches, athletics directors and league commissioners. Any underclassman who is hearing differently is probably hearing it from an agent or from another source who is misinformed.”
It looks like one of the major forces impacting the return of Andre Smith, Terrance Cody and many other college juniors will not be an issue this year.
Wouldn't it be great if Andre decided to return.

They have been saying that - and I'm been posting it - now for several weeks. I guess they decided it needed a major announcement. I think it would definitely affect Cody, in case he has second thoughts, and, maybe, Coffee. I don't look for it to impact AS at all. He's done all he can at the college level, and, despite what you hear, it's not really feasible to buy an insurance policy covering what career earnings for a LT would be...

I read or saw somewhere that Andre stated he wasn't in any hurry to leave college. He said he would talk it over with coachs and family and make a decision. From those statements I got the impression that he might stay based upon how his family feels. At the time I was thinking staying would be foolish. However given the changed circumstances It doesn't seem as foolish now.
Maybe it's important to the family for him to get his degree but for me I'd take the money.
I agree about Cody and Coffee, it gives them a chance to improve their position in the draft if needed and still not lose the money.

He's either already graduated, or will at the end of this or the next term, so that's not an issue. I don't know what other honors he can earn at this level. The balance to be weighed now is injury vs. the pleasure of one more collegiate year, and he's had an injury which would make one think. While he's made "PC" statements, all I've heard is that it's a done deal. I'd obviously love to see him back...

I'd say championships would be something worth earning, but is it financially smart to forgo all that money while its on the table...no.

Still, we'd be a national title contender with Andre even with a new QB.

I would be pretty shocked if Andre were to return for his senior year.

Considering how highly he will be drafted, I really don't think it makes much sense for him to return to Alabama next year. I would love to shake his hand and thank him for all he did while he was at Alabama. He's one of the very best offensive linemen I have ever seen play.
