No Zo Lawrence for USM this year

Because USM had filed a waiver. They expected him to be eligible to play this year

What was the waiver based on?

For some reason this post made a conversation between USM and the NCAA pop in my head:

NCAA: "Alonzo Lawrence will not be eligible this season"
USM: "But we filed a waiver"
NCAA: "Yes, but players transferring from one FBS school to another have to sit out one year"
USM: "I don't think you understand: We...filed...a...waiver. A waiver!"

Per Larry Fedora's Twitter Page:

@CoachFedora: We were informed this morning that Alonzo Lawrence will not be elgible to play the 2009 season

What? What would even be the basis for an argument in getting him eligible for this season. He was kicked off the team by Coach Saban for a rules violation, and Zo's high school head coach confirmed that. Its not like it was the same scenarios that Broderick Green or Sidell Corley were getting their waivers filed under.

If Peek couldn't get a waiver when the HC openly said he was eliminating his position (and he wasn't really suited to another position), why in hell should Zo get a waiver?

Maybe they should have strenuously objected like Demi Moore's character in "A Few Good Men."

Okay, so that was a first-class movie reference. Well done.

As a USM grad (but Bama diehard), I was kind of hoping he would make it on the field this year. Oh well.

I agree on the Zo waiver. What I don't understand is why Peek couldn't get one. If you think about it, eliminating a position is almost like eliminating football, because there was absolutely no opportunity for him to play.
And I believe in cases where institutions eliminate a sport, those players are allowed to transfer with no loss of eligibility. Makes no sense to me in peek's case.

It's just another conspiracy against USM - one of their fans told me so.
Well, everybody knows that Bama, UM, MSU, Memphis, FL, the SEC, the NCAA, ESPN, all bowl games except Mobile & Liberty, the U.S. Congress, the President, the Green Bay Packers, George Bush, the Weather Channel & The Blue Collar Comedy Tour, to name but a few, are part of the massive, 50+ year, all-out conspiracy to keep USM down. *sigh* And the heck of it is, I live here amongst 'em, and find my USM alum buddies to be reasonable & pleasant & thoughtful with the HUGE, SCREAMING, exception of football.

With that said, I'm able to attend most USM home games, & was looking forward to seeing 'Zo on the field. Next year...

USM's pretty cool though Exiled. I pull like crazy for them. I hope Deandre gets cleared this week but I'll believe it when I see it. Fingers crossed.

Well, if your last name is Means and you're from Memphis and your family takes money then you can transfer without sitting out a year. Other than that, you're wasting your time with a waiver.

Because we eliminated the DB position? :conf2:

LOL . Waivers and hardships are in place for situations beyond the control of either the staff or player which prevent the player in question from participating - health , family , personal , unforeseen blah blah , etc. . Peek had been a starter who was told by a new staff he would not be able to play because his position no longer exsisted . In other words , it was a situation beyond the control of the player in question . Lawrence is the polar opposite . He's simply seeking a smaller pond in hope of becoming a bigger fish . I wish him well .
