Question: Now that players are paid and can transfer each year, is booing them still a social taboo?

We've never had a problem with fans booing professional athletes, because they're paid. Now that college players are not only being paid but are unrestricted free agents year to year, is booing them still taboo?

Talty was booed at the OU game. I was there and it was LOUD. DeBoer and other players had a problem with it. What say you?

I have zero problem with it. So few of these guys play because they want to represent what's on the front of the jersey anymore, and some of them are being paid more than I'll make in the next 10 years.

If I - a paid "entertainer" in an activity that must now be considered "entertainment" (a la the NFL) - perform poorly, I should expect to be booed by those who are paying to see me. If you paid to see the Stones back in their prime, and Jagger came out on stage completely trashed, couldn't remember the words to the songs, and then shrugged and walked off stage, you'd boo, wouldn't you?

I say they wanted to be paid professionals and with that comes the good and the bad.

Talty was obviously a special instance where it wasn’t just about that missed kick.

It was carryover from his tantrum the week before.

Then he makes gestures at the crowd.

He’ll probably get booed again. He’ll probably deserve it because he acts like a little jerk.

personally, i have a problem with fans booing a kicker for missing a field goal.

i don't have a problem with fans booing a kicker for not having any self control and pitching a hissy fit at the long snapper on the field

Boo Away! We are well past the amateur part of Amateur Student athlete, in many cases we are past the student part as well.

Im not going to say im torn, because I significantly lean toward treating them like professionally paid athletes. When the crowd started booing talty during the OU game a guy next to me kept saying "Stop, theyre just kids! Theyre just kids!" FOR ME, Im good with it, though i didn't boo him or will I boo a player. I just think its now fair game for those who do.

I do wish we could do like the NFL and immediately cut a fg kicker and bring another one in. LOL!

These kids make more money than I'll ever see......they better grow thicker skin and better produce.

They have no loyalty now other than their bank account....there are no binding contracts.....they are free agents every year......so cry me a river Mr. Cupcake when you get booed for something on the field.

Talty....he wasn't so much booed for missing the FG as he was for everyone knowing how he reacted after that OU miss. People don't like that crap.

I say treat them like professionals....that's what they wanted.....now they get the whole ball of wax. You can't have it both ways.

Make an arse of yourself, and suffer the consequences.
Sometimes, one realizes, one must seize the the moment and make chicken salad out of that other stuff (you know: bad snaps, poor [but recoverable!] holds, shanked kicks, etc.). I foresee an illustrious new NIL opportunity based on Basil "Fawlty" Talty's tirades

Yep. The Saints down here just cut their kicker, Blake Grupe, because he kept missing makable FG's. He was missing one per game, so now their looking for another kicker.

Booing the players is NOT beneficial for the school or the players! Not every player is a NIL millionaire. If fans gravitate to a mindset that booing is acceptable, it will alienate players from fans, the school, and even each other. No good will come from it. If fans have a reputation for booing the players, that's a great recruiting tool for opposing coaches.

Does anyone seriously think that booing the players can have a positive effect?? Really??

Let's try it the other way... Does anyone think booing the players can have a negative effect on the players... the coaches... future recruits...??

I'm old. Maybe too old. But I'm amazed that mainstream fans would consider booing their own team to in any way lead to something positive long-term for the team.

And no, I don't hear and don't care about anyone's boos to this post.

I have no problem with booing players (i.e entertainers, and nothing more) whether paid or not. They are there to do a job. They get "compensated" in some form or another, even if only having the facilities and resources to hone their crafts...which are at least partially funded with tax dollars. Everyone one of us has booed or fussed at a player from the comfort of our living rooms while watching on TV. What's the difference if you do it in the stadium?

If you want to be paid like the big boys, you get treated like the big boys.

Ordinarily, I don't like booing a kicker for a miss because it's self-defeating. You need the kicker to have confidence, and booing undermines that.

But I don't think Talty was being booed for missing. I think he was being booed for being a jerk.
