***OFFICIAL*** BAMA vs VT - Post Game Thread...

I haven't had time to read the whole thread, just the last two pages. I am thrilled. Our defense is SICK! G-mac looked great once he calmed down. I admit that in the first half, I was mighty skeptical, wondering how short the hook should be...but there is a reason I am not the coach. Once he settled down and once the O-line made their appropriate adjustments, he looks to be a real asset, not a liability. And speaking of O-line, and really the entire team...wasn't it great to see the other team withering right before your very eyes, and see our guys seemingly getting stronger and stronger. Shout out to the RB's as well...they run the ball with controlled fury, and that began to wear on the VT defense as well.

Read a little about people not liking the wildcat and wanting to scrap it...that is short sighted IMHO. If you think about all the doors that opens for our offense...with other teams having to prepare for it, the personel we have to be able to run it...sure, Ingram was the only one that took snaps back there tonight...but what if we line up Julio back there...Maze? Star? all the guys that we can put in motion. I dont want it to be our base offense, but it sure is a good wrinkle to have...

Back to the defense...it seemed to me that we had like 12 or 13 guys out there on most plays...our guys fly to the ball!

It looks like we will continue to see what we saw so often last year...opposing players limping to the sidelines in the third and forth quarter. Coach Saban said it a few years ago, and it seems to have stuck....we are a team that other teams are going to hate to play! I love it!

Roll Tide, team! We look forward to welcoming you back to BDS next week!

I'd just like to say you're welcome to ya'll.

The little story of my day:

I woke up this morning with a touch of the, ahem, intestinal bug and decided to sweat it off working in the yard. By the time the game started I had the chills and was completly miserable. With the game at 7-6 I couldn't take it any more and deciidied to TIVO the game and go to bed.

Tossed and turned for an hour and rolled over to see the score on ESPN. 17-16 VT at the half. Spent another hour trying to go to sleep and checking the score and it never changed. I though well, I might as well get up and see why we're struggling.

Something was mentioned about possible interference and VT had to punt. We promptly scored in 2 plays. recovered the kickoff and took care of business from then on.

Clearly, it took me getting back in the game to get our butts in gear.

So you're saying we should thank you for slacking off all the way thru the 3rd quarter, and nearly costing us the ballgame. Next time SUCK IT UP!!! ;) RTR!!!

I am not an X & O guy, but here are my thoughts during the game. At the end of the 2nd Qtr I was thinking, "come on Greg, I know you are better then this." He was!

O-Line was impressive to me when I remember it was VT we were trying to keep off our QB. I'd give the O-Line an A.

D was awesome. Another A.

Special teams needs some work.

Wildcat. I don't like it no matter who runs it -- and probably never will. However, I can see it gives the other team something to think about. I call it the Rogue Elephant.

I would have taken a 1 point win and been glad to get it. Roll Tide!

My thoughts...

1. I believe the hype about McElroy now. Yeah, he took a half of football to get squared away but that was also against a top 5 defense and with a basically brand new O line. He was focused squarely on Julio for most of the 2nd quarter but quickly grew out of that.

2. The Wildcat. First game against a dominant D so piling up yards in any formation is not garaunteed. With the weapons we have available this could be a new wrinkle that can pay huge dividends later in the season.

3. Terence Cody was not a factor in this game like we saw last year. Let's hope he was still recovering from the flu. Watching the game, I saw Chapman make a bigger difference inside.

4. Collin Peek. It's about time the Tide had a top flight, pass catching tight end....and actually used him. Good on the coaches for game planning this and McElroy for getting him the ball.

5. Mental Mistakes - WTH McClain?!! I imagine after a word of prayer with Coach Saban he won't be repeating this mistake. His play after the penalty almost made up for it though.

6. The O line - We had reason to be concerned but they came together nicely and in the 2nd half were moving a great defense around almost at will. There is a noticeable drop off from the Caldwell/Johnson/Smith anchored line of last year, but this year is very young and Carpenter came along nicely during the game.

RTR!

I never was very concerned about McElroy and his ability to assume the role. He did very well for the first start and will be a great one before he is done at the Capstone.
The surprise for me was tight end Peek. This is one big guy and he did a great job catching the ball in clutch situations last night.I kept thinking, he reminds me of Whitten when he played at UT and now with Dallas. It is nice to have such a big target with sticky fingers. If those catches across the middle continue, it will help open up Jones for more catches.
Of course, there were other players that stood out, but these two, along with Ingram, really came through when they had to.
Overall, it was a great game between two very, very good teams. For all those Tiffin naysayers out there, he kept us in this game last night when the offense struggled. Without those FGs, momentum could have taken by VT.
We have a another special team this season. The offensive line needs some work on run blocking, but it will jell as the season progresses.

That's certainly possible. However, when I was watching, Cody was double-teamed every single time he was in the game. Chapman got a few one-on-one matchups, which is why I think he may have appeared to be more effective.

Make no mistake about it, Cody getting double-teamed had a lot to do with our success in stopping their running game and getting pressure.

I didn't see any stats until this morning. McElroy finished 13 of 18. It didn't seem like it watching the game but the stats were an eyeopener. We dominated

On the main VT board, they were calling him "McElway," in derision. I noticed one poster there calling him the same, without a hint of sarcasm...
You see these names in print and are never sure how to say them. I was also rhyming Vlachos with nachos (untill I learned better) and now I'm confused on G-Mac. I've been saying his name " mic EL roy " but heard the ABC crew pronounce it " MACKEL roy " .

(Just be glad Verne Lundquiste wasn't in the booth.)

Just a few thoughts:
1. I'm concerned like everyone about kick coverage right now. But that's correctable.

2. Defense will get better. Not good news for teams on the rest of the schedule.

3. I didn't see any quitters in the 4th. We're moving toward CNS's mandate for the team to learn to FINISH!!

4. We've got horses waiting in the barn ready to run the ball if called upon.

Along with the players already mentioned, I want to point out Hanks and Maze which both made great catches. Things are looking very promising for our Crimson Tide this season!:BigA:
