Game Thread: Official Post Game Thread - Bama vs. Clemson, Round Two...

Exactly - interference means 1 more play but no more time on the clock. What puzzles me is why Saban didn't call time out to tell the defense that.

Game can't end on a defensive penalty. They would have 1 play from 1yd line with no time on the clock.

If we are really going down this road about dabo then I'll say this... he is great coach, good recruiter, but not really my cup of tea as a coach. The heir of Saban is going to have 3-5 years to run wild due to recruits CNS has for them, but after that it's going to be all on them. I think dabo would thrive at bama but I don't think it will happen because of bad blood with the higher ups and Clemson being a way better fit for him. I think Sark, Pruitt, or some other up and comer is far more likely than dabo.

The debate will rage over two things:

1. Whatever happened during the Dubose years (I don't know and some here do and they think it's unforgivable).

2. He's now proven he can recruit, build a program and win a championship.

We'll see which will prove to be weightier.

I think it was a tactical mistake to not call a time out there. With our D gassed, there was little chance to stop them. But he could have coached them up about the pick play. Only way to beat it is to jump the route like the A&M DB did against us that year. It was a different play, but only way we beat that pick is for Tony to come over the top and take the risk of batting it down or INT.

I don't know the intricacies of what the DBs are supposed to do IRT switching. Seems to me that on both pick plays the DBs should switch instead of trying to chase the WR through traffic. Also, if that's not how they're supposed to play that you'd think that the staff would have made that adjustment after the first pick play. If the DBs switch on the last TD it's probably an INT..

First post in a long time - it's good to be back.

I can appreciate the distinction that some of you are attempting to make vis a vis a game manager vs. a dual threat qb. I think the previous poster who noted that Jake Coker was not a game manager who on to something; Jake was indeed a Big Ben clone whose throwback scrambling ability saved a couple of games Likewise he was allowed some leeway this his passing.

I'm grateful for all that Greg McElroy did for us, but he was the last quarterback of a fading era. That time is past and in this age of rules favoring the offense, we need a quarterback capable of a scoring quickly. AJ was capable of that - see AU 2013. Moreover, if AJ appeared to be a game manager, it was only due to in-game decisions. He was an amazing quarterback who would have racked up countless yards for someone like Jimbo Fisher and he should have won the Heisman in 2013 as a lifetime achievement award, just as Watson should have won it this year.

It's unfair to make a judgement on this topic based on Blake Sims and Jalen Hurt. Blake was a first year started with endless heart and severe limitations as a quarterback. I don't know what happened with Jalen, who appeared to be a better passer earlier in the season. All we can say at this point is that CNS overplayed his hand with this defense - who could blame him? - and that due to the weirdness (to be put it nicely) of the Kiffin situation, Jalen regressed somewhat. The kid deserves a whole season with Sark before we making any judgments over the long term. If he had been a slightly better passer capable of scanning the field and getting the ball to a check down receiver, we're all smiles this morning. That can come with time, though I'll agree that if it doesn't happen next year, it will raise some questions about him, Saban, Sark or all three. That said - I don't think it will be a problem.

Two things no one is really talking about. They lost TWO fumbles to us. One at their 35 yard line. We lost 7 yards and punted. Then other at their 16. Went backwards AGAIN and had to kick a FG. We should have cashed both those in for TD's or at least the ONE starting at the 16.

Then our vaunted D......The GOAT D......couldn't even FORCE a FG try. If Clemson got down there they scored TD's every time.

It's just a game.....but it's going to take a LONG time for me to get over this one. We had so many chances to win this game. To get the lead with 2:00 to go and this 'GOAT' defense couldn't even hold them to a FG try or stop them. WE got THRASHED by Clemson's offense two years in a row. It's just so disappointing to see a Bama defense get embarrassed like that.

Lastly I can't believe anyone is blaming Jalen. He was continually put in spots to fail. Yet he threw a BOMB to OJ and Ran for TD that looked like it would be a TD run for the ages. I'm glad he scored.....if he doesn't go all the way odds say we don't even score a TD at the end. *sigh* So frustrated.....so bummed...

I did some searching this morning and alluded to this in another post, but Hurts might have had the best true freshman season ever for a QB. Now, people are pointing to the struggles, and that's valid, but I think it's easy to forget the fact Alabama was playing great defenses (JT who everyone seems to agree is a great college QB looked worse against Clemson) and had issues with the playcallers. Still, to consider Hurts statistically had the best season as a true freshman ever, and this came against a #1 SoS, is astounding. I think Alabama fans have every reason to believe Hurts will improve and could become a dominant passer. His development is already ahead of guys like Lamar Jackson and Vince Young.

On the last touchdown...I feel like we should have shown man, but switched to zone...that way each player wouldn't have to cross and just pick up on the switch...they had already burned us with the pick earlier.

I know that everybody looks at this from a different angle.

But during the first half, even thought they ran 44 plays, we kept them in check.

IF we could have been more efficient on offense (just like you mention about the two short field we had and only got three points out of it) their offense would have not been on the field near as much and our defense would not have gotten tired near as much.

Aside from the 7 they scored in the first half, while our defense was fresh, we controlled the game.

But, cause we couldn't sustain drives, they eventually started to figure things out just as our defense was getting more and more tired.

I see your point, but I see it being more about what the offense couldn't do instead of what the defense couldn't do.

Great point on the turnovers. If we're up 28-7 instead of 17-7 early in the 3rd, no way Clemson wins.

at least for me, giving dabo credit for his wins/coaching and thinking he is a tool are not mutually exclusive ;)

Oh I get it and I'm kinda in that camp too. I just think some view him as some dumb redneck who fell into all this and I hope we see from last night's game how dangerous that is. He built what they have there from the ashes of a has-been, wannabe program and it's not all just recruiting the best players either. I thought Clemson's coaches did a great job in the game.

To give a flavor of what 92tide, REBELZED and others mean in regards to Dabo, check out this excerpt from an al.com article:

Following Clemson's win over Alabama, Swinney made it a point to bring up Cowherd.

"At the end of the day, we left no doubt tonight. We wanted to play Alabama because now y'all got to change your stories. You got to change the narrative. Y'all got to mix it up. You know the guy that called us a fraud? Ask Alabama if we're a fraud. Was his name Colin Cowherd? I don't know him, never met him. Ask Alabama if we're a fraud. Ask Ohio State if we're a fraud. Ask Oklahoma if we're a fraud. ...

"The only fraud is that guy, because he didn't do his homework. I hope y'all print that."

After his press conference, he told a member of Clemson's sports information department he would do radio with just about anyone except Cowherd, per AL.com's John Talty.

I would want to crawl in a hole if Saban went on a stupid rant like that and if that's how he operates, keep him away from Tuscaloosa. The guy can obviously coach and build a program, but good grief.
