Bama Game Thread: Official PostGame Thread - Bama vs. IU...

I don't have twitter, so what have some of the current players said about last night?
I wouldn't take that
There is a misconception about the REC that even our own fanbase keeps repeating. It’s that they are an incredibly powerful entity. The average REC member pays 350 bucks a year to see two scrimmages a year and 4 guest speakers at their club in a year. 150 of that 350 goes to pay for the scrimmage expense to the university and the rest goes to pay for a steak and potatoe dinner for those 4 speaking engagements. At the scrimmages the university is constantly begging for money from REC members. So these aren’t exactly the Illuminati types that everyone acts like they are and more like the average poster on this board just with access to two closed scrimmages.

Morgan’s goal was mostly to say 1) temper your expectations on this year and 2) we need money to aggressively attack the portal in the offseason. It could be worse and he tell everyone like Freeze did this year and basically promise a CFP berth and keep running out the Benjamins for us to spend on the portal.
That's more likely make sense.

People just do not understand that you cannot bring a coach that has never coached in the SEC before thinking they are going to do good it will not happen that whole coaching staff never been in the SEC before they need to fire deboer and the staff with him and make some phone calls to get lane kiffin.
Dude, step back from the ledge. And get over Lane Kiffin. He ain't gonna be offered.

Whatever. I just don’t understand what CKD has shown some of you that makes you want to stay the course. I’ve seen a lot that makes me scratch my head and very little that makes me think we have the right coach.
Maybe we have the right coach and maybe we don't but if you fire him after just 2 years we'll be AU 2.0.
Force him to make changes? Sure. Changes are needed. We gotta get tough mentally and physically.
But if you fire him then good luck on our 7-5 or 8-4 seasons for a while after that.

And he is who? And what has he done where to make you think he'd be better?
And lastly, what in the world makes
IU Defensive Coordinator. Already makes $3 million at IU so he's not leaving for a G5 job.

It's not necessarily his on field stuff (though that's incredibly good). More his ability to evaluate talent and next level communicate and motivate.

Like I said, a hire like that at a ranked P4 program would blow up message boards, but Haines will be a guy that big programs say "Why didn't we?" five or ten years from now.

I noticed their linemen seems more “in shape” then ours. We have a lot of dudes with belly fat.

I kinda alluded to that in the other thread. I'm not so sure it's absolute weight since guys like Latham and Neal were massive, but also had very low body fat. Contrast that with our current LT who is both way heavier, but I would also bet carries a much, much higher body fat %.

Yeah I’m tired of seeing the ‘Even CNS couldn’t do this’ excuse.

<snip>

There’s way too much excuse making right now from the Staff and the Fans.
Feel better now?

I pray my snark isn't too soon. I've respected your positions for quite a while; this one is an egg laid, IMO.

I'm chalking your post up to the need to vent. And I *truly* look forward to your future contributions.

I’d take some explosive fast twitch 290/300 lbers over the 330/340 belly gang we have.

Yeah I’m tired of seeing the ‘Even CNS couldn’t do this’ excuse.

He’s 74 now and retired at 72.

He didn’t want to or knew he couldn’t put in the same energy as his younger self to do what needed to be done to build tough teams through the portal and navigate all the NIL stuff.

Fair play. He earned the right to ride off into the sunset.

He finished 12-2 with an SEC Championship and went to OT in the Semi’s with the eventual NC.

He by god didn’t get embarrassed repeatedly by other teams.

He didn’t even come close to losing 8 freaking games in 2 seasons at the end.

Cignetti is 10 years younger and has the fire and hunger to navigate this current landscape and he’s not the only one.

Other teams are showing that quick improvements can be made and that you can find talent that fits your system and put together a tough team that can be coached hard and play consistent competitive football.

Cignetti specifically cleaned house at IU in year 1 and took them from a bottom feeder to 11-2

He brought in 30 new players in 2024 specifically from the portal to make that improvement.

How is that much different from “oh boo boo poor little CKD had a mass exodus it’s not his fault”?

No it is his fault if according to Morgan we “struck out” in the portal.

It’s by god his job not to strike out.

If he can’t identify needs or coach up who he has then it’s a major problem.

What is he good at other than making excuses?

This is all fine and good and KD may not be a long term solution.
But don't pretend Saban never had bad losses. Don't pretend we didn't play like mess under his tenure here.
I remember a certain loss to SCeast under CNS, a major fail against an AU team (we were up by what? 3 scores? and AU came back and won) so don't pretend we didn't have some losses like that under CNS. And we still call him the GOAT (and he is).
Now, who says we didn't reach out to Cignetti (be it officially or thru back channels) and he said no?

Changes in the football staff are needed, for sure. But you can't pull the plug right now one way or another. Like him. Hate him. Willing to give him a chance or not he's gonna be the coach for at least another season.

Now, we got beat by a better team yesterday. Period.
And we're sitting here acting like the AU fans.
We lost. Get over it.
No, it doesn't feel good. It never does. Be it by 1 or 100.
Firing our coach will hurt our program more than him coaching our team another 3 years.

This philosophy of relying so heavily on the QB has to change. Can't win big time football like that.
This.

Many of us have commented that Ty played hurt most of the 2nd half of the season. It seems he may have been playing *injured,* and that baffles me. I pray he gets great rehab, starting this week.

Mack came in looking like a HERO ... for three plays. Then he honestly looked as if he was in over his head.

I agree that the whole game -- especially with the kind of opponents we play -- cannot be put on the QB's shoulders game-after-game.

All analogies break down at some point but I’ll attempt it anyway.

I see 2026 for DeBoer as the pivotal type of year Bryant experienced in 1971. After two dismal years in 1969 (6-5) and 1970 (6-5-1) there was considerable grumbling about Bryant being too old and “the game had passed him by”.

Bryant looked at his roster, realized he didn’t have a QB in Terry Davis to run a pro passing game. He did have an All-SEC type RB in Johnny Musso. Bryant contemplated an offensive change, but didn’t do it in a knee jerk fashion. He took in council from the likes of Emory Bellard and Daryl Royal concerning option offenses like the veer and the wishbone. After spring Bryant was quoted as saying “I made the decision I was going to live or die with this wishbone thing”. Risky? Yep. But Bryant realized he he couldn’t consistently win “doing as he had always done”.

We saw a similar switch by Coach Saban by moving to a more open passing attack/up tempo on offense when the HUNH offenses begin to stress his defenses.
The point being is both Saban and Bryant realized that, when things aren’t where they need to be, the biggest risk isn’t the change itself. The greater risk is continuing to do what you’re doing and “hope” it works.

Coach DeBoer in two years is at a crossroad in my opinion. Something has to change. On both sides of the ball. It is abundantly clear his finesse type of game will not be consistently successful in this conference. And the change starts with him first. And his coaches. Will he do that? I guess we’ll find out in the next few weeks.

A lot has been said about Cignetti using the transfer portal and his obvious success. I checked on 24/7 to see exactly what he has done in his 2 years at Indiana. In his 2 years he has brought in a total of 58 players from the portal. He brought in 5 players of this total
who were rated 4 stars, the remaining 53 were rated 3 stars and some were even rated NR(Not Rated). As been said our paltry number of portal players brought in have, for the most part, been non contributors. Somebody on this overpaid staff needs to get off their rear ends and aggressively work the portal. I would even consider bringing in an experienced QB who might have 1 year of eligibility to help transition to Russell.
