Alabama has a character problem. It really got going the last 2-3 years of the Saban era. Guys just seem unprepared and don’t care to get there. I’m looking forward to DeBoer getting his guys in there and rid of a lot of these high school star divas. I think he’ll have a great culture in the program if he can get to that point.
With NIL/TP era players, those types will be hard to find.

Pretty much what I’m thinking. It seems to me they aren’t seeing or they aren’t “trusting ” what they see. As to third and fourth downs, through the first half of this season, the most concerning thing is these aren’t just 3rd and 4th and short yardage. Many of these are long yardage situations That 4th down blow coverage for the TD was inexcusable.
They probably still have a little PTSD from all the Vandy misdirection.

So everyone worried about Tennessee steamrolling us next week, can you explain what’s going on in Knoxville tonight?

I think Texas is really good. Maybe Ohio State will end up being so. Or Oregon.

Otherwise there is a lot of mediocrity out there, including Alabama of course. I could speculate a lot. But it is utterly bizarre to me that this team ran Georgia out of the stadium for 30 minutes and then had played like a Shula/DuBose special since.

Then again Georgia hasn’t looked special since the 2nd half against us either.
This! This new era has brought some degree of
parity to FBS football as well as an enormous amount of inconsistency, shallow depth, and playing down to one’s competition. We’re rightly concerned about Bama right now, but a look at the big picture shows that we’re not alone in this crazy new world. There don’t seem to be any more doormats in the SEC….

Superior athletes who are in their head are no longer superior athletes. Coaches have to step up.

Went to the game. Great atmosphere, crowd was into the game. Here are some random observations after rewatching the game this morning:

LB play was atrocious. Too often they played flat footed. Lawson probably had the worst game of his life, and Malachi Moore wasn't far behind. At times the DL was getting penetration, but they often got out of their rushing lanes, allowing the SC QB to scramble. A lot of this is coaching, and all available evidence suggests that Wommack just isn't the guy.

Offense had an off game, but it wasn't that bad, once you accept that SC has two legitimate NFL-caliber edge rushers, and that we were making a concerted effort to have longer drives. You'd think that our army of analysts would have noted how good that one edge rusher is and that we would have done more scheming to neutralize him. Maybe we did and Booker and Pritchett just had off games. Still need to work the RBs into the game. OC is still learning how to play call. Bernard is almost as dangerous as Williams, and the TEs are becoming more of a weapon.

Milroe can be counted on for a couple of brain farts a game, but several of his mistakes were simply unacceptable at this point in his career. Before the endzone INT, we shifted our alignment and had some motion. The defense did not move an inch in response to either--so they were likely just selling out on a Milroe run. The OC and/or Milroe didn't adjust, and Milroe ran into the teeth of the defense. The subsequent INT wasn't so much a bad throw as an excellent defensive play.

For the most part, the officials were letting everyone play; that said, there were two pretty clear targeting calls that weren't even looked at--you'd think that the replay booth would at least take a second look. That's troubling on multiple levels.

Saban was all about a business-like approach; at times it kept us from getting up for a big game and we had issues. DeBoer wants a more emotional approach; while it can result in things like the first quarter against Georgia, it also make the team prone to losing confidence; which is the major problem with our defensive front 7.

The outlook isn't particularly good for the rest of the season; that said, it's becoming clear that except for Texas, everyone has some notable weaknesses.

This is the worst Bama team since 2007. I am not sure it is DeBoer's fault but they just are not that good.
Hard to read, but this is probably true. Of course that fails to take into consideration how great all of those teams were.

Pruitt would indeed be an upgrade, but you’re totally wrong about Steele. Our defense was legit last year.
Last year Alabama had 2 lockdown corners and 2 top edge rushers. Their absence without similar replacements, dramatically changes this D. The safeties were better also. Bama does not have overall elite talent on D or O, along with a change to a one-gap system with 2-gap personnel in the front 7 has greatly reduced Bama’s potential.

With far superior and more compatible personnel, last year Alabama lost 2 games and played 4 more one-score games, including a 6 pt win vs 6 loss A&M, 3 pt wins vs 7 loss AU and 8 loss Ark @ home. Only had 2 blowout (21+ pts) wins vs P5 teams.

They also had 5 one score games in both 21 & 22 as well as 5 in 23. Many (8) were vs 6+ loss teams in those years. Playing close, including vs mediocre to bad competition is not a recent phenomenon.
