GoBamaJags, wisten, & DisplacedBamaFan : I sooooooo agree with you guys - and 2 things: first of all, Mike is a good lookin' guy - but he can't help that when he's just lookin' straight out with no particular expression that it casts a certain look in the eyes - but trust me - he's NOT scared...AND it's not that he is not emotional either- he has as much as any of us all put together - he is just classy & is man enough not to let himself get out of control ---- he doesn't SHOW it publically like that. Some people can just do that. Lots of people admire that qwuality. It's like he knows something we don't know. (& believe me, he DOES)

I just came from a function where there were over 400 Tuscaloosan's - of those discussing the game, everyone says to give MG time - that he will develop & they wish that people would let the coaches do the coaching. They know more than we do & that's why we DON'T always unederstand why certain things are done the way they are.

We lost.
We're all disappointed. But - we need to move on & help encouarge those guys for SOUTH CAROLINA & STAY behind them - they need that NOW more than EVER!

AMEN!!!

I'm guessing that, had he went for it and not made it, you would be saying it was a dumb call.

I also remember folks screaming that a former Alabama coach was too conservative - heck, all he did was win games, yawn, how boring. I sure miss those days, though - and you'd probably take that coach back.

Conservatism did not cost the game. Poor execution cost the game. Period.

All I know is that we have some darn good football players on both sides of the ball and in my opinion they are light years ahead of 2003. I think this coaching staff has made great strides also. There seems to be a continuity that I believe will get even better as the year goes on and the years.
Does our coaching staff make all the right calls? No! Can I do any better? No way! Having said that, I would have gone for it on 4th and 1, and that is plum scary to think about me making that call. I know that he was thinking about pinning them deep and the way our defense was playing for the most part, might have been the best call in hindsight. Had he gone for it and failed, Coach would have also been admonished by giving the Hogs field position at that time in a close ball game. Can you say catch 22? I also do not think criticism is a bad thing, just being in love of your team, The Crimson Tide, and wanting to win in the best kind of way. Complainers, second guessers and sugar coaters all have a bond with each other. We love the Crimson Tide and hate like the dickins to lose to anyone, even if the team we are playing are a wee bit better than we are, which I think the Hogs were today.

It's damned if you do, and damned if you don't with some of you guys. We didn't go for it on 4th and 1 so you gripe, if we went for it and didn't make it you gripe. Same thing for we need to pass more. What if Guillon had passed more and had 4-5 interceptions? you gripe either way.

Coaches always get second guessed

The nature of the job, considering how we were running the ball I would have though we would have gone for it,perhaps he had something else in mind. It's a moot point at this juncture in time. I'm over it I hope you are on to South Carolina.

At the end of the day.. I, as well as many other fans, are impressed with the Tide.. players, coaches, and the whole shebang.

We lost. It hurts. It's now a memory.

Another "Clueless Cahonesless" Fan

Your just the type fan that would say go for it and then whine about it if the Tide didn't get the first down....

I questioned the fact that we continued to run to the left side over and over and over again. But, you know what? By the end of the game, it was obvious that the coaching staff had done their homework and knew that we could dominate them on that side of the ball. This was obvious because Arkansas knew we were going to run the ball before the game started and by the third quarter it was obvious we were going to keep running to the left and they never really were able to stop it. We beat ourselves today.

So, it's always easy to question the coaching staff. I'm sure there are things they would do differently in hind sight. It's like that with everything.

Don't you think in hind sight that Nutt wouldn't have tried to run up the score? Oh, bad example! :D

in that situation there is no question that you go for it. that's all there is to it. if we wouldn't have made it it would still have been the right decision and i doubt there would have been two posts on this board saying it was wrong.

True. One the field position battle, I understand. I am talking about the offense in general.. it looked rather plain. We will win several more games this year, even looking plain. But something will have to give for next year to get back into contention for championships.

When haven't we looked plain? We've always depended a strong running game on offense and possession passing. We've never had an offense that was "sloppy joe" or "pass happy! Even when Joe Willie and "The Snake" was at Bama, it was run oriented. It has always been run oriented. The Hawgs have a rather "vanilla offense", but the difference was that THEIR PLAYERS MADE THE PLAYS! CMS can't catch the ball, he can't throw the ball, he can't make a tackle, he can't get called for holding, and he can't stop Matt Jones! He can only call'em, he can't execute'em!

Darn why aren't you out there making 1.5 million

coaching a college football team instead of wasting all your valuable talent posting on the internet. Coach Shula was playing the percentages and since the D was playing so well , HE elected to punt and pin them deep. It did work out like he or anyone else pulling for the Tide wanted. There were other missed opportunities for the Tide and the 4th and 1 is just magnified because we lost.

Dixie dog

The point is not that there were not many reasons.....it's just at the time 4th and 1 (too close to punt and too far for a fg) it was where the momentum of the game changed. We were getting great push from our OL and it sent a poor message to the team imo. I did not like the call then, not after the result and the game just turned at that point. I do believe it's a waste of time to continue with this point, but hope we can not make that mistake next time.I really feel 90% of the time with our OL we can make that 1 yard. Also,as an OLe Coach said if we can't make a yard we should lose the game anyway!JMO

I agree with Bayou and Crimson Donald, its a catch 22 situation. I wish he would have gone for it, but he didn't. I know Coach Shula knows far more than I ever will about football, that is why he is the Coach and I am the arm-chair QB.

We are blessed with loads of talent on both sides of the ball, we just lack playing experience, I know that there are brighter days ahead, but I just hate to lose.

Matt Jones made the difference in the game today, his maturity after costing them the Texas game on that fumble, was the difference in winning and losing today. Give him credit, he made the two plays that gave them momentum at the end of the 1st half.

Next week at BD, we will be ready for the Gamecocks.

I did not make any call against CMS. Seems to me he had our guys ready. Point your guns somewhere else.

Don't yall think that 4th and 1 would have been the perfect situation for the old Leron & Tim Jumbo Package everybody was obsessing about before the season? I also think that at some point Shula or Rader are going to need to trust Guillen and give him a chance to make some big plays. I don't think it took Arkansas long to realize that Alabama wouldnt throw until they got to 3rd & long. Its a lot harder to make completions when the defense knows you are passing. I just hope that next week, the coaches find a way to get Marc going. :biga2:

Shula's Cajones . . .

O.K. So he called for a play to go for it, and it just did'nt work. So all you guys could then say he was a dumb coach . . . Just remember that any play requires that 11 players do what they are supposed to do to make it work . . .and the are eleven players on the other side just as determined to keep it from working . . . .

My point exactly, with football as in most other endeavors in life hind sight is always 20/20. CMS and all coaches will always be second guessed it's the nature of the job.
