Ole Miss mascot options down to three - Ole Miss - SunHerald.com

The committee then eliminated two of the concepts based on the criteria. The Rebel Lion was eliminated because the committee felt that there was not a strong enough Mississippi or Ole Miss connection.

The committee also eliminated the Rebel Stallion due to logistical problems with having a live horse in the stadium or Grove.
Do any of them have a strong enough Mississippi or Ole Miss connection? Colonel Reb was about as strong a Mississippi or Ole Miss connection as you can get. The Admiral Ackbars has about as much to do with Mississippi as any of the choices. Why not go with that? :conf2:

Logistical problems with horses? Hogwash! I've seen cops on horses on campus during Game Day at Bama.

How about the Ole Miss Laughing Stocks?

I would suggest that they have four tethered keepers run The Orgeron out on the field before every game a la Ralphie.

Yes, there would be logistical difficulties with keeping a live Orgeron on the sidelines during the games, but it would be just so tradition-rich.

The Ole Miss "land sharks"......are you serious?!?!?

How about the Ole Miss "wooden spoons" or the Ole Miss "tack hammers"

...land sharks, I don't know which is worse, the person who suggested it or the rest of the people in the meeting that paused, looked around at each other and said............Yeah....I like that.....

ROLL TIDE !! :BigA:

Good grief, just announce Hotty Toddys already!!! Everyone knows that's what is going to be selected. The actual mascot is going to be a big glass of bourbon or a beer bottle.

Who are they trying to kid over there?

One of their goals is to get away from the notion that Ole Miss is "Old South" (trying to get rid of all the negative stereotypes). I say that so long as it is "The University of Mississippi", it will always be associated with the Old South. You are the flagship university of a Deep South (and arguably, the most southern) state, you will never be able to shake that off, even if you change your name to something like Oxford University, Manning University or something along those lines. The folks here in Oxford don't see it that way, however. It's just as well. It's easier to make fun of them that way. ;)

Then maybe move the entire campus to Massachusetts, and become Ted Kennedy memorial University, home of the "Fighting Socialists"...wouldn't that be the very antithesis, of Ole Miss Rebels....If you're gonna' do something.....go all the way!

They should be the Rebel Warriors. They should get one of the local native american tribes to agree to be their representative. Make it completely historically accurate. Endow scholarships for tribe members and donate to the tribal council. The tribes have a connection to Mississippi, the Choctaw fought with the Confederacy, and if they did it correctly, their mascot could go from being a source of historical division to a source of pride and unification.

And they get bonus points for publicly thumbing their nose at the NCAA.

How about the Fighting Billy Idol's (Rebel Yell), The Tenacious David Bowie's (Rebel, Rebel), or The Dreadful James Dean's (Rebel Without A Cause).:biggrin2: I know this is a stupid post. Almost as stupit as the stink over Colonel Reb.

I think they should go with the "Politically Correct Dufuss." Then it could change from week to week depending on which intolerant group was offended.

Sorry, I meant "Almost as STUPID as the stink over Colonel Reb. I'm not a typist, OK.:PDT_al:

the whole 'Ackbar' thing did nothing but prove to the world that they don't take football very seriously down there. This whole process has been a laugher to everyone, and it really doesn't matter which one they choose. They can't 'undo' the embarassment they've already brought upon themselves.
