OT Barrett Jones Update

  • A very merry Christmas to you and your family from all of us at TideFans! Be safe and be blessed!
I guess we'll see how much pull Tyler Love's decision has on him. He would be another terrific addition to our OL and our runaway recruiting class! :biggrin2:

O.K., guys, it's been a week. Anyone heard anything?

I kind of hoped Barrett would commit immediately after Tyler, and I still expect him to come our way. Silence makes me nervous, though...

I saw where Jones scheduled an official visit to Florida for 9/15 when they play Tennessee. It seems the Vols and Gators are both hard after him. And he has scheduled a trip to North Carolina. I guess he's not as much as a lock as I have read. Sounds like he definitely won't be committing before his season starts as some said he might. I would love for Bama to pull him and and Chris Jordan out of the Vols' backyard. They may be the 2 highest rated players in Tennessee. That would send a message to Phat Phil that Saban is in charge when it comes to recruiting. Just like the one being sent to Tubs. I love how Jones is described as playing with a mean streak. Nice!

Jones was at the UT scrimmage tonight in an orange polo.

If I were a talented young athlete being recruited by several "major" division 1 university football progams and asked to visit these universities, I wuold certainly want to be respectful. I would likely wear the colors of a particular university while visiting out of respect and appreciation of having been respected enough to have been offered a scholarship.

I would not read anything into this other than this young man is polite and respectful of the feelings of others.

How would you feel if an athlete who had been offered a scholarship to the University of Alabama were invited to attend a scrimage and wore the team colors of rival university while visiting? (And I am sure this has happened at one time or another.) At the very least, it would cause you concern that the recruit really had no real interest in your program at all and it might even be perceived as offensive. I think what you see in the example of Mr. Jones is at least a measure of respect and politeness that demonstates a level of maturity that one would expect from a young man who chooses to commit to the University of Alabama. ;)

I don't know. I think that orange is one of those colors that you have a point in wearing it. (Hunting, incarcerated, etc.) I think that if you go to the point of wearing it, it shows more than polite... It shows real interest. IF he wore crimson to Bama I'd blow it off, but orange to UT, I think that its an indicator.

Now if he visits Bama and wears Crimson and wears Orange and Blue to UF, then I'm behind you 100%.

I think recruits generally fall into three categories.

1) early signers, there can be many reasons for this, some want to get in a class to avoid the number crunch, some just want to get the whole decision over before their senior year.

2) in season signers, these ususally sign after witnessing a big game, the Gameday atmosphers can sometimes solidify a choice for them.

3) after season signees, these usually want to ride the train as far as it will go with only a hand full waiting all the way till signing day.

Right now we are in a dead period between 1 and 2

I think we're still in the #1 phase b/c there are several recruits that are likely to commit before they come for an official visit (which is what #2 sounds like). I'd just add to the list several other reasons: for #1: some kids will commit early b/c it is their dream school (Love, hopefully AJ and Nico for the '09 class) and for #3: some kids don't care for the recruiting process one way or another, they just prefer to wait and make the most informed decision they can; an entire football season tells a lot about a team (JJ is falls into cat. 3 for this reason, not b/c he enjoys the attention and wants to ride the train. Other than those additions, I think you have stated the general idea well.

From all that I have read, the "experts" say we appear to be in good shape with Barrett Jones. TI had an article on him a few weeks ago and reported Alabama is the "strong favorite" to sign Jones.

One of the premium sites quoted Jones as saying it will be "December or possibly a little sooner" before he commits.

I don't read much into him wearing orange to a UcheaT practice.
