Thoughts on Bama running the spread ?

You could have knocked me over with a feather to see Bama running the spread offense all game. I know it's catering to your talent and we dont have the road graters on the O Line, but I am still a lil in shock to see it happen. Here's hoping they can make it work this year and keep improving all year. I am elated with the win and the performance on both sides of the ball, I aint really complaining just more shocked than anything. RTR !

Re: Thoughts on Bama running the spread ?

The offense will continue to evolve. I expect to see a balance between us running out of the Shotgun and under center. We have enough talent to just about do what we want. We're not limited to JUST having to run the spread or JUST a power running game. We can do both and odds are we will.

Re: Thoughts on Bama running the spread ?

Umm, we didn't run the spread. We were probably in an Ace package on like 10% of the plays. Most of the time we were in the I or shotgun.

Are you talking about the Wildcat formation? If so, that's not the spread, it's a version of the old Wing-T formation. I was not that surprised to see it, as we had heard rumors of it in camp. I was surprised at how often we ran it and how few wrinkles there were to it. Of course, that may have been by design, with wrinkles coming later on as needed.

Re: Thoughts on Bama running the spread ?

I was not impressed at all with the "Wildcat" version of the offense. A buddy of mine swears up and down that we are setting something up down the line and maybe he is right. What I did love that I cant remember us running in recent memory is the Pistol formation. I think this is the up and coming trend in football, and we have the guys to run this to a T. These guys accumulated almost 500 yards of offense against a GREAT defense. I think this could be special the rest of the year.

BTW, a funny quote I just heard on the radio is that Greg McElroy technically still hasnt started a game for Alabama since Ingram took the first snap in the wildcat.

That wasn't a spread offense .

Re: Thoughts on Bama running the spread ?

what was the deal with the wildcat and pistol so much? especially when the wildcat seemed like it wasnt doing much of anything.

Re: Thoughts on Bama running the spread ?

:BigA:That was Mark pick the spot..all night.. hope something is being set up from this.

The Pistol?

I absolutely loved the pistol. It's where the QB is in like a 3-step shotgun with the RB lined up directly behind him. It gives the QB a better view of the D and a quicker route to drop back or roll-out, while still giving the RB the ability to take a hand-off straight ahead into the middle of the line without having to move sideways, losing some momentum, as when in the shotgun.

The Pistol?

Yep, anytime you saw McElroy lined up in a semi-shotgun with a runningback directly behind him, this is the "Pistol" formation. Uafanforlife gives a great explanation earlier. If anyone watched Tulsa last night, they ran a lot of it. I just think the play-action it offers is much different from what the play action does at this point from under center. Whether it be because of VT's great defense or not, we didn't run the ball that great from under center. Most big plays were from the shotgun, therefore giving the great playfakes available from the Pistol.

Re: Thoughts on Bama running the spread ?

Whatever we ran... we definitely need to improve on and that's the only fact I'll give. I know the final results showed we dominated offensively, but if you watched the game you'll know there's still A LOT of room for concern -- especially how it'll pan out against SEC defenses, good or bad.

Re: Thoughts on Bama running the spread ?

The "spread" and its definition is a lot like the west coast offense. There are a lot of versions. The basics of the spread is you "spread" the field with your formation. That is the basic foundation of it.

Please keep in mind we were breaking in three new offensive linemen (one being the center and one being the left tackle) and a new qb. That is HUGE!!! I think the offense (as the game went on) did exceptionally well. It was the first game.

Just to note, this defense would be in the top 2 or 3 defenses in the SEC. Probably 3rd right behind Bama and Florida.

WHat these guys said.

Re: Thoughts on Bama running the spread ?

We're not running the "spread option" nor will the game plan we saw tonight be the "new Alabama" offense. Jim McElwain is known for coming up with entirely new offensive game plans from week to week. Last year we ran what we ran because that's what our personnel could do. We've now got more dynamic personnel that can do a lot of different things. We also cannot simply line up and run off of LT anymore either. So we've got to different things.

This offense will continue to evolve under CJM and some weeks it will look like one thing then the next could look very different. That is what's so great about having depth and a lot of talent. It gives you more options.
