Paid players vs regular students (different rules for those in legal trouble)

Javion Toviano has been reinstated to LSU football. On July 21st e was arrested and charged with video voyeurism, a felony. He admitted filming the girl without consent. The case is under futher investigation. Why was he allowed to turn himself in? Would a regular student be forewarned so they could turn themselves in? Why is further investigation needed when they recovered the three videos?
My rant is this; since the players are paid athletes now and the game is all about them why should they be treated as "just innocent young men?" and get all the perks they used to have? I don't feel as if I owe them loyalty any longer.

My guess is that as long as it is under further investigation and he hasn't been convicted, then he can still play.

I don’t know the law, but since this is a non-violent crime, they gave him a chance to turn himself in and if he doesn’t do it after a certain length of time they go get him.

I do wonder what the LSU's rules are for a regular student accused of sex-related felony.

If it was up to me, I'd say they needed to get their legal issues settled before we even talk about entering school as a student. And if they confessed or were found guilty, they would have to be out of prison and 5 years clean before they'd be eligible for in-person classes.

Back when DJ Pettway and several other players beat and robbed several students, I also wondered what the University of Alabama's policy was on students -- any students -- who are convicted of crimes of physical violence. Never did find out what that was.

And yes, I know DJ acted as a lookout and didn't deliver any blows. Still, he participated in at least two beatings of innocent students, one of whom was permanently injured.

I believe I heard on a local sports talk show that Javion Toviano had actually confessed to videoing the young lady in question without her knowledge or permission. If this is true, what “further investigation” is needed?
Personal opinion: I see this as cooperative foot dragging by law enforcement, LSU athletics and the University to keep Toviano eligible as long as possible, maybe even getting through the season.
If I was the father of this young lady, I’d be a pain in the tuchus for the DA’s office.

It's easier and quicker on all parties involved if the suspect turns him/herself in.

Yes, a regular student, or anyone else for that matter, would be forewarned and allowed to turn themselves in. Again, it's easier.

Having said that, wouldn't a further investigation also lead to more accurate charges even if it doesn't lead to more charges?

He should be kicked off the team purely on character reasons. Besides just being a decent human being and what we used to call “shaping young men”, that’s a walking lawsuit right there. No one will do that these days though.

It varies from school to school, but many of the internal disciplinary processes at many schools have come under a lot of scrutiny because they afford the accused little or no due process.

At some schools it’s little more than a kangaroo court process.

These are, however, independent of local, state and federal law enforcement authorities and are not criminal processes, but still a farce.

The worst problem is that due to things like UGA not caring yet winning and letting these kids get away with literal murder (That kid forced those others off the road AND left!!!) these issues won’t change…

It’s sad…but it’s now all about winning at all costs and values…collateral damage is a written check to them…

If my son was accused of some kind of assault or harassment he’d be treated much more harshly than a star athlete at his college, because my son is just a regular nobody on campus.

We put these athletes on a pedestal because they can ran fast and throw a ball 100 yards, but almost no one cares about the student who is doing Nobel Prize level research at the school…even less so for the average tuition paying schmucks.

And yes, UGA has sold its soul for gridiron glory.
