And having a relative in the gambling/gaming industry for a number of years (legally) where he would be in a position to “know”, there is a lot more people than most of us would ever imagine involved in significant wagering that ARE in a position to influence the outcome of a contest.
As an example, let’s say you are a football official but love to the ponies. You are doing it via the back door using a bookie to keep in on the down low. And let’s say you’re terrible with horses and get underwater with this bookie. You don’t think the bookie might let you “even up” by making a few calls a certain way? Or know someone with influence enough to get a coach to “sit on“ a comfortable lead late in a game not to beat a spread?

And it doesn’t have to be horse racing. It could be back room Texas Hold’em or a number of different things.

Just like insider trading on Wall Street, this stuff happens. As a compulsive gambler with over 20 years of clean time under my belt, having spent many years in GA and as a sponsor, you would be surprised.
I agree. In fact, the only thing I would disagree with you about is when you say that I would be surprised. Everything is about the money. It really is a shame, but what do we expect from a society that places so much value on entertainment.

And Josh Pate reacts to himself.
Apparently officials have contacted his about his previous rant on officiating.
I generally like Pate but this follow-up was a nothing-burger. It's like he wants to protect his connections at all costs instead of (rightfully, in many cases) throwing the crappy refs under the bus.

Officials generally are not being paid by one team paid them to influence the outcome.
What I got from it is that (as suspected) officiating is different between conferences. (You can imagine what constitutes DPI in the Big 12 vs the SEC). The rules are the same between conferences, but the emphasis is different.
Nameless conference officials who like being able to tinker with officiating (not saying "We want Ohio State to win" but "We really want to emphasize targeting this weekend.") and are not going to want to give that power up

I get it, but there were some simply horrific, game-changing calls last weekend and those officials should be called out, reprimanded, and replaced. Acting like they're just following league orders is silly, it does not absolve them from making the calls they made.

Do the job correctly and stop changing the outcome of games. I couldn't care less if they were 'following orders'. Have some pride, some self worth!

Sadly, despite having a HUGE microphone now, Pate still seems more worried about his connections rather than actually using his voice to force change.

I like Pate, but this is bull. He goes from saying officiating is bad and there's no accountability to officiating has no centralized authority and emphasis is different from conference to conference.

Accountability is accountability. Bad calls....repeated bad calls or missed calls....should be hung around the necks of the crews making them like an accountability millstone.

Just because one conference emphasized DPI one week and one conference emphasized targeting that same week......doesn't mitigate the fact that bad calls are bad calls.

I did agree with him on one thing in this new video.....there are refs there now that have no business being there. BUT...if that's true....how does the Autrey crew get rewarded with a playoff game (Michigan-TCU).

I think he is wrong about the gambling factor. It ended up being true in the NBA. You can Google it if you think I am making this up and don't remember. There needs to be accountability and someone should look into this.

He is wrong about the gambling factor. Sure, it can monitored if its a direct connection, with your name on the account. You could certainly put in place buffers so there would be no direct connection unless someone dug into it.

I mean, it’s an Electro-Voice RE20. It’s not huge. It’s just average size.

I get that.
Johnny Bench used to say that there were pitcher's strike zones and hitter's strike zones and all he needed from the ref was consistency. If a pitch is a strike for the away team, make it a strike for the home team.
In an ideal world, what constitutes DPI would be the same across the nation but officials work for conferences.
When the Big 12 used to have games with a score of 61-59. Why did the Big 12 has such high-scoring games while the SEC saw 21-17 games? Better athletes in the Big 12? Hardly. I think the conference told refs, "call DPI really tightly" (analogous to the "hitter's strike zone" in baseball). These kids notice and the DBs learn to not "hand fight" very much and just stay with the receiver and once he catches the ball, make the tackle. The result is lots of 50 bombs, which Big 12 fans seemed to like a lot. In the SEC, whose fans seem to like defense, hand fighting will be allowed and 50 pass plays are a little bit rarer. Many Tide fans have observed DBs getting "handsy" or even holding receivers. I think it was called more tightly in the Big 12.

The solution to this is so very simple. In the USFL every call of any type can be reviewed. the reviewer does so on live TV. he shows the video, he explains why he makes the choices he makes in real time. It's not rocket science. this is not advanced physics. He speaks of the criteria in the rule book and how it applies to this play. it all happens fairly quickly, then the game goes on. How has this not been adopted. We are using stone tools in the space age.

Personally, I thought his response was very enlightening as it shed light on why a penalty like targeting is so confusing because of how it's called. I mean, if every conference has varying ways of interpreting the "rulebook" concerning targeting no wonder it is so maddening to us viewers from game to game.

The one in JP's video of the defender hitting the other guy in the butt and getting ejected because of "targeting" is ridiculous times infinity!!!

Probably because his connections keep the bills paid and him from having to go to a "real job" like the rest of us peons. LOL!

I would love to know that. He HAD to be recommended for that gig.......and whoever did that is at the root of the problem!!

There is absolutely NO transparency in the SEC Officiating office.

I noticed that the box scores no longer mention the officials names.

I didn't think any of the examples he brought up in his video constitute targeting or roughing the passer. There is nothing malicious or with intent to hurt that is showing up in those examples.

Whether the connection to the NFL is there or not (certainly possible), the NFL isn't the barometer that some of its defenders consider it to be. While you could scrutinize every snap and find a penalty every single time, the NFL seemingly allows the Chiefs to get away with a lot more, especially wrapping bear hugs around DEs - which I thought would be considered holding.
