penalties for missing mouthpiece?

It is enforced pretty good in jr. high and high school. I was once penalized for no mouth piece in the 9th grade, I think it was 5 yards. Then the ref laughed and told me he was beating his brother out of some business. It was a small town and everyone knew his brother was the dentist.

This is a somewhat off topic question, but since obviously I could never play tackle football, I was wandering if it hurts every time you get hit or do you get used to it? These boys just pop right back up, but I feel like if I ever got the opportunity to get hit like that, I wouldn't be getting up. The pads seem like they wouldn't help much.

The main things that hurt on me were my hands and my feet. Occasionally, I'd get hit in the lower back or rear end and it would hurt for a bit, but usually the pain went away fairly quickly. But my hands and feet always were hurting from being stepped on and being caught between pads or helmets in collisions.

When it turned cold and/or wet, it was really painful. :frown:

I always loved the day before practice began, when I'd boil my mouthpieces and fit them. It was like a ritual.

Yep, but Greg left his out on the pass play we ran right before the half when he threw the pick. I think that was part of the plan to throw off the D. The mind games that are played across the field are so funny.

You are too observant... I never would have noticed. Do defensive linemen watch for that kind of thing?

It is ridiculous that some don't wear them. I have this thing about eyes and teeth... any threat of hurting either makes me cringe. Eek!

Like a couple of people said, adreniline pumping, you don't really feel it.

But I'll tell you about one I did feel, physically and emotionally.

I graduated in 1982 from high school, we practiced on a field adjacent to the field Banks high school practiced on. Banks had a "hot shot" tailback named Derek Slaughter. Ken Donahue had made the trip to watch him practice, and asked our coach and the Banks coach to have a little scrimage, so he could get a more objective "look". We obliged, I played nose guard, the first play was a toss sweep to Slaughter, he went for about 18 yards. The second play was a straight dive, Now I was a pretty big boy, 6'0" 278 pounds, and the strongest player on the team in 3 out of 4 lifts. I blew off their center, and was face to face with Mr. Slaughter, I got low, and exploded right up through his numbers, with an arm behind each of his thighs..............and Mr. Slaughter bent me backward, double, stepped on my chest and never slowed down........That hurt....but what hurt more was the fact that Derek Slaughter did recieve a scholarship to Alabama,.......and never played the first down of football, for the Crimson Tide...........Now that HURT !!

ROLL TIDE !! :BigA:

LOL!!! I know Derek. It's hard to believe that he was a tailback. He's got some size to him.

I think that he was a defensive lineman at Bama.

I really don't think the refs check for that stuff to much but then again it's not worth losing your teeth over that either. Atleast not to me.

Officials certainly check it in high school, but the above post about preventive officiating is correct. The player will simply be told to put his mouthpiece in, a flag shouldn't be thrown if it doesn't have to be. Now if a player flat out ignores the warnings, then yes, it is a penalty. In high school it is delay of game - 5 yards if the snap is imminent (rule 3-6-2d), or unsportsmanlike conduct - 5 yards if it is during a live ball (rule 1-6).

A Barn punter was hit with a time-out a few years back when his mouth piece hanging from his helmet. The team got in the set-position and the flag was thrown.

Only time that I have seen it...

I remember watching Brodie forget to put his mouth piece in while he was at Bama..I remember one play he forgot to put in his mouthpiece in, and he got rocked, he got up & had to look around to find it on the ground..He didn't get a penalty for it..

No rule against a favored biblical verse visible on the mouthpiece? :conf2:

Or a "Go Daddy.com" reference? ;)

That's a loophole right there.

Let me ask a dumb question. Why would you not wear a mouthpiece? Teeth are not easily replaced and it probably prevents you from biting into your tongue or cheek too. Are they uncomfortable?

I have never played football obviously, but I did wear a mouthpiece once I think when I was in junior high, and I hated it. I stopped wearing the thing. I guess you get used to it though.

QB's do it because it's hard for them to yell a cadence that has to be heard by your line with 90,000+ fans screaming in the background with a chunk of plastic in your mouth.

Other players don't wear them because they are too lazy or forgetful to put them in. Most of those types are the guys that don't have them attached to the facemask and stick them up in the top of the grill after every play. I never understood doing that. I never really wanted to touch mine more than I had to because your hands are all over some other dudes sweaty, nasty body for 60 minutes. QB's hands are under a Centers crotch........

Thanks for the answers. So basically, they are a necessary evil in order to attempt to protect your teeth. I suppose the school pays for dental work, so what's a tooth or two, right?

I'm not generally rules crazy in this manner, but 99.99999999999+% of WRs have their FB pants pulled up above their knees. It's even more apparent when you watch some old school video and see how far down the pants used to be. I wish once someone would get flagged for it... just once!!!

Defensive players and coaches watch everything to gain an edge. They watch for tells and tendencies while breaking down film and during a game. I remember Brodie used to telegraph running vs. pass plays with his stance. Half of our offensive line used to telegraph our plays under Bucket step Bob with their stance. :eek2:
