Hi all. First of all let me congratulate Alabama on winning the Nat'l Championship this past season. I just loved the way you guys stuck it to Florida in the SEC Champ game, and then took it to the Horns.

I have joined this forum to help get some info regarding the game this Sept against my beloved Nittany Lions. My buddy and I are planning on making the trip to Tuscaloosa and could use a little advice.

Anyone know what time the kickoff is scheduled for yet? I can't believe it would be an early afternoon start. My hope is that it will be a night game, but I do know that Ohio St/Miami play the same day, so if that's a night game, could that alter the kickoff due to TV?

Unfortunately we have to fly into ATL and make the drive because flights to Birmingham were too expensive. Any "must see" stops along the highway. We are planning on hitting Dreamland Bar-b-q, and a stop at the Bear Bryant Museum.

Thanks for any help in advance. I'll be around to talk some football, just trying to get my trip together first.

Good to see you here. It's not often that we get to have visitors on Tide Fans from the Big 10. Penn State is a program I've always had tremendous respect for. Alabama - Penn State have had some great ones through the years. To me a series like this is what college football is all about. I've been looking forward to this game and going to Penn State for years.

I've not heard anything on the game time, but considering the game is the second Saturday in September and being played in Alabama, for the sake of the players and fans attending the game, I certainly hope the game is at night. The heat and humidity can be brutal down here that time of the year.

Plan on tailgating on the Quad Saturday. Dreamland and the Bryant Museum are musts. I hope you and your budddy enjoy the trip down here with the exception of the game itself. :)

Please note that there are 2 Dreamland restaurants in Tuscaloosa. Be sure and go to the "original" Dreamland. And know that your only choices will be white bread, ribs, and chips.
Going to the Bryant Museum and tailgaiting at the Quad are a must!!

Roll Tide!!

On your route from Atlanta stop off in Irondale (Birmingham) and have lunch at "Fried Green Tomatoes, aka Whistlestop Care aka Irondale Cafe". It is just off the interstate.

Irondale Cafe :: The Original Whistlestop Cafe

Fannie Flagg, nee Patricia Neal in Birmingham, made this restaurant famous in her novel and movie.

Note:Patricia Neal had to change her name because of the already famous actress by that name.

If you do not have a place to stay, you will probably have to drive back to Birmingham after the game. Vacancies in T-Town are nonexistent.

If you have never been to Alabama/Tuscaloosa/etc. you are in for a treat. I love going down about twice a year for games although the past two years I have been only once since I got to see the Tide play in Atlanta.

Believe me, you will have a trip to remember the rest of your life.

I would almost guarantee this will be the 2:30 (CDT) CBS game. I don't see CBS skipping a chance at a Bama-PSU national game. I know I'm very excited we're playing PSU this year. Should be an awesome game.

There's not much between Atlanta and Tuscaloosa to visit, unless you happen to be a NASCAR fan. The Talladega Speedway & Museum are right off I-20. IMO, Dreamland is not at their best on game days. Don't know if it's a problem handling the large demand, but they're very hit-and-miss on game days. However, if the weather is nice, it's still worth going as they set up tents outside and there's always a large, friendly crowd there.

I must say that Penn State is one of the teams I always like or at least respect. Coach Paterno is the last of a breed. I hope I can see the game next year at Penn State. I've never been there and it's not too far away.

Welcome, Nittany Ed. Don't fret having to get off in Atlanta. It's not a bad drive, and you'll probably be able to get a car and drive to Birmingham before you could have gotten a flight there.
The Mrs. and I are both hoping to attend the game along with my sister and her husband who is a 1976 PSU grad. Hope to see you there.
In the meanwhile, stick around and join in the fray.

CBS? I doubt it. This will probably be the game of the week. It'll probably be on a 7:45 ESPN time slot or a 8:00 ABC time slot

They may not be "must see" stops but you if you are a Nascar fan Talladega speedway can be seen from I20. Track tours and Museum is open. Closer to B,ham is Bass pro shops with Barbers race track right next door, Barbers Museum is a must see along with the Porsche experience. The Porsche experience is 5-6 laps around the track your call mild or wild these drivers will give you the ride of your life on a gorgeous winding track. Back on I20 its one mile to the 459 bypass reconnecting to I20 to get to T-town.

Even if it isn't the game of the week, IIRC CBS doesn't start their college football broadcasts until about the third week. Florida-Tennessee is usually their opening game. May not be that way this season but thats the way its been. There have been several past seasons I can remember flipping to CBS to see what game they were showing only to find tennis or some other undesirable spectacle.

Welcome to the board!

If you and your crew would like to meet up and party down (hoping it's not a morning game), I'll have a tent set-up either on the Quad or on University. PM me and let me know and I'll keep you posted as the much-awaited season approaches.

And another sight to see in T-Town is this:

Regardless of when the game is, a hearty welcome to all Penn State fans. Win or lose, PSU folks are great. I remember so many fun games between Bama and PSU from my youth. Glad to be hosting you again!

Very nice!

You get my vote for post of the month and without question you will be a finalist for post of the year.

OK. Got my hotel in Birmingham. Rental car at the airport. All I need now is tix to the game, which shouldn't be a problem since a friend of mine is a huge donor.

I am glad that a lot of you are excited for this intersectional game. I can tell you the respect for Bama goes both ways. I remember the series back in the 80's well. From the first time I saw the Bear in person, leaning against the goalpost at Beaver Stadium, to the next year when I and 3 of my buddies jumped in a car and made the 18 hour drive to catch the game at Legion Field in 1982. If you remember that game, we somehow managed to block our own punt, and the Tide went on to win 42-21 (I think). Also remember well how friendly the Tide faithful were in inviting 4 tired and bloodshot eyed "yankees" to their tailgates for some pre and post game eats. I still have my ticket stub from that game...$12.

rhYno, if that is representitive of the ladies you will have at your tailgate, you can count me in. I had a nephew who recently graduated from UGa, and I went to a game 2 years ago in Athens, I was floored by the number of coeds in sun dresses. You won't see that up North.

As far as the kickoff time, my buddy and I have had the same discussion as to whether or not CBS will air the game @ 2:30, or will ESPN pick it up for night. I was hoping someone here would have a little more insight. I will keep checking the schedule.

Thanx again, ed

Keep watching this thread. There are a couple of posters here that generally have some insight as to who will be carrying the game and what time the game will be.

I am pretty confident it will be a night game regardless of who carries it. I just don't see this as an afternoon game at all.

The US Open runs until the 12th. I doubt CBS will pick up the game. Since we are the home team, I would bet my bottom dollar that ESPN will be picking up the game at a 6 45 pm kickoff local time.

I was at that game as well. It's the only time I've ever seen a team block their own punt. Bama won that day, you have the score correct, but Penn State went on to win the NC that year. I don't know if it still stands, but for a long while that was the largest loss (21 points) ever suffered by a team during the season in which they won the NC.

I still have fond memories of the '88 game, the day Derrick Thomas sacked the PS qb a thousand times. That qb, can't recall his name at the moment, probalby woke up nights in a cold sweat looking for DT. One of the greatest individual defensive performances I've ever seen.

Bama-Penn State has been good for college football, and I'm glad to see it renewed.
