Phillip Shanks attacked and found unconscious

I am not making this up! Maybe TENNSTUD can tell us about the real Memphis Mafia. Here is his post from Volchat:

"Breaking News! I was just called by a local media person asking where I was from last night until this morning. I refused to answer and inquired as to why or to whom it was important. I was informed that my name was on a list of suspects. Naturally, I was more curious, since I didn't go to Platinum Plus or other questionable sites in the last 24 hours. I was then told that Phillip Shanks, part of Team Gallion, was found at his office by his secretary this morning unconscious with his billfold and other valuables missing! I assured the media person that despite my contempt for the Team Gallion slave trading excuse gang, I had nothing to do with Shanks mishap!
I hope Phillip Shanks is alright. The only thing I have found wrong with Shanks is his association with less than credible or reputable individuals, but that comes with the legal profession, I guess! Plus his office is a temple to Alabama football!!
If anyone accuses me of having anything to do with this crime, I will sue!!"

From what has been released so far....

This happened about 7AM this morning and Shanks was discovered around 8AM. Supposition makes me think Shanks discovered someone in his office, but that is my opinion.

If you recall, Shanks represents Cottrell in the MGJ case. From what it appears there were two files taken (both related to the Cottrell case)and neither contained critical information. (As if a case would only have one copy...geez, the stupidity).

I doubt anyone has an idea how this will end. But, two things are very clear. One, someone is nervous and that leads me to think this. There is some serious stuff about to hit the fan. Word has/had it the next time Team Gallion were going to release some news-breaking information was in about 2 weeks...coinciding, coincidently with the court ruling on the 24th.

Personally that's a little scary that someone has that much of an issue to knock someone unconscious. And if I were the police there's one stud and one fat man that I'd be questioning.

A couple of thoughts...

Do you believe Linda Bensel Myers when she said "her office was broken into?" What about her phone line being bugged?

This will be a defining moment/event for the Memphis Commercial. I'll be looking for how this is reported tomorrow..if it's reported tomorrow.

Here's to a speedy recovery for Mr. Shanks. This just goes to show what kind of people we are dealing with here. Hopefully, there was so kind of surveillance system in place that will assist in catching the creep(s).

Hmmm...think about it. One of our lead lawyers gets rolled at his own office, possibly some files were stolen, Krispy Kreme's stock plummeted 30% today. Sounds to me like someone knows Phat Phil may be going away for a long time!

It might be reported, but Parrish will make sure that the story does not in any way tarnish his buddies.

This is unreal. There must be some worried and troubled UT folks out there. My question is, will the Memphis P.D. or the D.A.'s Office, or perhaps the U.S Attorneys Office investigate? (A real investigation) I doubt it.

You know, I've had a couple of concussions - not pleasant, particularly since it seems to increase the probablility of Parkinsons and Alzheimers (there are probably some around here who just can't wait -
), and a whole hour is a hell of a long time to stay "out." I hope the injuries aren't as bad as that could indicate - a hematoma, maybe...

Here is an entire article about the situation. The fact that some people, mostly UT fans, can think this is a stunt or ploy to drum up publiciity is absolutely ludicrous and asinine.

What sane human being would have himself robbed, beaten and knocked unconscious? And not only that then have the gall to fake very important legal documents and files being stolen. There must be some alternate universe where this is a possibilty of something that could actual happen. Not in my mind.

The guy or gal that wrote this article mistaken thinks Kenny Smith was a coach at Bama. What ever happened to writers knowing what they write about?

May 7, 2004

Cordova, TN - This morning Attorney Phillip Shanks was allegedly robbed and beaten at his office at 811 Walnut Run. He was found by his secretary when she arrived for work.

Mr. Shanks represents Mr. Ronnie Cottrell and Mr. Kenney Smith former University of Alabama coaches in relation to the highly publicized Albert Means case.

It appears that robbery was the main motive in this case, and the Memphis Police Department’s Robbery Bureau is investigating this incident.

The Memphis Police Department is looking into the items that may have been taking during the robbery. Mr. Shanks lives in Germantown and Germantown Police Department is checking his residence. There are no suspects in the case.

Seems like several theories are making the rounds, one being that the perpetrator was mainly there just to steal files out of the office. But if that was really his main objective, wouldn't it make more sense to break in in the middle of the night or another time when no one would be expected at the office? I think that he was there to 'rough up' PS just as much as he was there to steal files or other information...jmo...

Just when you thought this situation couldn't get any stranger this happens.

Bottom line if the Cottrell working files indeed were stolen then this points to the UT/NCAA side of the slim pit. I am not saying that someone actually associated with UT or the NCAA would do this. It could just be some idiot sympathetic to one of those sides.

The assertion that somehow the FBI might have had something to do with this is completely out of the realm of possiblity in my opinion. At least for the sake of the integrity of our country I hope that is completely out of the realm of possibility.

What next? I hate to ask.

Mr. Shanks was in a severe automobile accident several years ago that took th elife of his wife and left him with some permanent disability. I won't go into a lot of detail but suffice it to say that a blow to the head that might knock you or I unconscious could have easily killed Phillip.

This is a serious breach of the law and in light of the circumstances the TBI should bring their full weight to bear on the case.

There is a very pointed message here. What were the three items stolen?

1. Cottrell files. Anyone who knows anything about attorneys know that there are backup files somewhere.

2. His Alabama ring. Strange?

3. His wallet. The wallet was obviously to give the local law enforcement a "reason" to assume it was not related to anything else that may be going on.

This reminds me of the scene in the movie "The Untouchables" with Kevin Costner where the little accountant is killed in the elevator by Al Capone's gunman. There is no reason for the killing other than to show that anyone can be reached.

The theft of the files is insignificant. Shanks' wallet can be replaced. But, the combination of the taking of the files and the ring makes the point very clear. The whole attack upon Shanks appears to me to be nothing but a symbolic gesture that no one is beyond the "touch" of the Memphis mafia.

I personally don't think that Gallion and company are the types to back down from threats, either direct or indirect.
