We started right after opening game last year making plans for the MTSU game this year. We got a motel in Northport and tickets from the ticket agent that advertises here on Tidefans. We are all set. Can't wait.
Last year we visited friends and never really ate that much in local places. We did visit Cotton Patch, a place on the river close to Indian Hills (can't remember the name but it was very nice) and Dreamland. I remember when we lived there 1967-77 eating at a place called Horne's Barbeque. Is it still there?
The other day someone mentioned City Cafe. Is it a good place to eat? Are there other places we might not know about? We moved out of Northport in 1977, so I am sure a lot of good eateries have been added since then.
Any suggestions, including places to avoid?
Many thanks from a rabid Bama fan in North Carolina.

Mmmmm

For breakfast...it's hard to beat the Waysider. For lunch and dinner...you have many choices. Hornes is good...but they opened a new Dreamland by the river below the 69 bridge. You also have excellent catfish and ribs/wings at Bottomfeeders in Northport. My parents actually like Buffalo Phill's wings the best...it's on the strip there on campus. I highly recommend all those places. I did my fare share of eating while I was at school down there (2000-2004) and have the extra pounds to prove it. If you want a good, solid "stick-to-your-ribs" meal...then try City Cafe. You will notice too that the food is a tad cheaper in Tuscaloosa since it's a college town and college kids ain't got no money to spend. Hope I was of some help.

RTR!

Ramma Jamma is great and has a nice decor for a gameday stop. Tut's on the strip is my favorite place though. Buffalo Phil's...blah, crappy wings (though they do have good sauce).

the place you're thinking of on the river is the Cypress Inn and it's pretty good. Nick's in the Sticks may not necessarily have the best food, but it's a landmark in Tuscaloosa.

If you're in town on a weekday, definitely give City Cafe in Northport a try for lunch. I'm pretty sure they aren't open on weekends...at least they weren't when I was a student there. It's a "meat and three" kind of place. Don't let the line out the door scare you...it moves fast.

Yes City Cafe is a great place to eat. For under 5 dollars you get a meat and 4 veggies. The food comes out in under 10 minutes and is fantastic, good ole southern cooking. But if you go at the peak times, around 11 to 12 a.m. on most days, you will be swamped with people trying to get a table. But it is a great place to eat and I used to eat there all the time when I was a student at the University.

Meat and 4 with sweet tea or other beverage surpassed $5 at the cafe a few years back. Still a great deal regardless! Can't beat the food or the volume of it for anything near the price anywhere else.

Hmmm...

Other than those already mentioned - there's always the stand-by's of GUTHRIES , McAllister's, the chains like Ruby Tuesday's, Chili's, OutBack, Olive Garden, etc - but don't forget about Cypress Inn, FIG (north of the river also), Evangeline's (also north of the river), several downtown spots, & if you like Mexican - JALAPENO'S (the one downtown) - it's a great place with good prices.

BAH!!! SACRILEGE!!!

well... if you say they're better than Dreamland, i'm gonna have to go.

Archibald's and even Woodrow's IS what Dreamland USED TO BE. I highly recommend either one. Oh and by the way City Cafe IS CLOSED ON WEEKENDS and they are only open for breakfast and lunch.

Yes but if you order a water it is just under 5 dollars. Of course I would always get my coca-cola and would be just over 5 dollars. :)

Buffalo's Downtown....all you can eat wings on Tuesday/Thursday nights

Of course, City Cafe for Meat/Veggies

Papa's College Custard for Ice Cream (since it will still be hot)

The Dumplin House on University was good, but they just changed ownership...not quite what it used to be.

Don't forget Jason's Deli....you get a lot of food there if you're looking for a sub

I luv T-town food!

I go to school here so i know a few restaurants. Me and my buddies ever since the first friday of my freshman year have eaten at possibly every yrestaurant in Tuscaloosa if not close to it. A meat and 4 with tea is currently $5.34 at city cafe and even if the line is out the dor you'd still prolly only wait 35 minutes. They get each person in and out in 35 minutes it seems. I'm a fan of woodrow's and archibald's which BTW are owned by the same family, so the ribs at one are gonna taste a whole lot like the ribs at the other. There is another place out 69 a good ways from town called the Brown Bag a BBQ restaurant along wiht a variety of meats and fish and wings but for me its the BBq and no i dont work there or am i related to the fmaily. out 69 towards Jasper turn left onto Charlie Shirley road (its about 2 or so miles past 82, bought a half mile past the red light at union chapel rd and 69 and there is a hispanic church on the corner) Then go about 2 more miles out this road (which will run you into hwy 43 if you go too far) and you'll see a sign for the Brown bag on your left and you'll take a quick right and its right around the corner. Their ribs are awesome; BBQ sauce spicy; fried green tomatoes nuff said. but thats a place thats normally not listed bc its generaly not known about. also there is a Matties diner down by the jail not a great part of town but great food only open during the week i think. Also Soul Delicious is out next the Central west campus on MLK dr. Also on greensboro there is a catfish place caled catfish heaven. take a right at hargrove and greensboro coming from 15th St and its realy good catfish place. Me being a kid raised in the burbs of atlanta found all these places to be great experiences as well as great food. Dont be shocked at the surroundings just enjoy the food served with a smile and you'll get a lot of that in Ttown. and dont bother with Horne's. i eat there form time to time just bc of its location but the food is par. Also Hooligans is a nice place to eat out past the strip towards downtown on your left if you're in to mediterranean food and mint sweet tea, which might be too far out of the box for some of you southerners but mint sweet tea, i luv it. Hopefully this helps if nothing else get to Brown Bag b4 noon or order it on friday cuz all the BBq is gone by then on a game day. Cuz i got the last 5 ribs one time and my friend who wanted some showed up to late and got left out of the loop. well if you or anyone else has any more questions about these restaurants just ask and i can go into more detail about location fod or anything like that.

BTW if you hadnt already noticed, its not that I'm a bad speller just a lazy typer and it would take me too long to fix all of my mistakes. If you want to blame anyone, blame instant messenging which requires quick writing rather than correctly punctuated and spelled typing. I'll try to get better but who knows.

If it's a Thursday night I always like "Wings" good place to watch the game or Willhagen's downtown. Biglittle, it sounds like you've been everywhere, have you been to Tee's on 15th st close to Stillman? Is Hale's Tavern still open?

Bub, leave it up to you to tell people about food in Tuscaloosa!!! ;) But I will vouche for you and say Brown Bag is one of if not my favorite BBQ restraunt thanks to you!! Also the ladies that work there are by far the nicest and funniest ladies!! And it is true go there early or else they will be out of BBQ because that has happened once! Also Cypress Inn makes a good Friday night dinner place just very nice and pleasent and full of other football fans!! Another place that I don't think has been said yet is Buddy's BBQ which is on 69(?Charles help a sister out if I'm wrong), but that's our normal post game dinner place it's pretty good nothing too amazing but it's good food nice service and about 4 or 5 TVs to watch any other games or ESPN!!
