Players for next year

Just signed two JUCO guys from Texas to help fill in at pitcher and at catcher and on the corner spots in the infield.

One of the guys was the closer for his JUCO last year and went 6-1. The other guy is supposedly a basher. Both of these guys look like immediate help. Hope so, anyway.

McGavin wont do any closing IMHO....he got ripped this year and is mainly a guy that just goes at you very inconsistently around 84-86....not closer material that I can see unless something changes. Yall dont see Booth playing some 3B ?? I heard he was going to step into that role. What about the catchers ?? I hear Ladson Montgomery is a full on stud. Anyone have any info on him ?? I know Bennet did a great job but he is a spray hitter with not much power. If Case Nixon recovers from TJ, he was throwing 93-94 I hear before his surgery with good stuff so that could be a help. The infield is a big question to me....that was one bad a** infield to try to replace. Look for McGavin to make noise at 1B....he can swing it WELL !!! I think the outfielders are going to have a big year.....Andrew Miller did a great job as a freshman....a little tweaking on his swing and he is gonna hit well. Dugas is, well, he is the man !!!

I am a big believer in stats and these stats scare me.

Here are some conference (SEC) stats from this past season, just for those returning players. This does not include tournament stats.

8 conference wins, with 5 saves. (30 conference games)
Peanut 3 - 2 and 3 saves 3.04 era
Morgan 3 -4 7.71 era
Wolfe 0 - 2 6.35 era
Smart 1 - 0 7.04 era
Whitaker 1 - 1 and 1 save 7.24 era
Hawley 0 - 0 and 1 save 8.38 era

The combined ERA was 6.03.
(147.77IP ./. 9 = 16.42) (99 runs allowed ./. 16.42 = 6.029)

The combined batting average was 301, with only 3 home runs.
Average runs scored per game = 2.07
Dugas had 44 of the 131 hits (Team 435 AB ./. 131 = .301) (Dugas .407)

Also, only Dugas, Miller, Bennett and Kelton remain from the 1 thru 9 hitting order.[/FONT]

These numbers magnify how important our upperclassmen were last year.
Seems Adam M. is doing well this summer and should have better numbers next year and hopefully Peanut can continue his hot pace (will probably have to throw many more innings next year). [/FONT][FONT=&quot][/FONT]
[FONT=&quot]However, if these numbers don't improve, it could be very difficult in conference play.
Let's just hope some of these guys have a banner .

While Kilcrease will be asked to throw more innings it can't be in the form of a Wells type deal. As long as he isn't asked to throw 8-9 innings every game I think he will be throwing 7 and occasionally more. But if he goes out there and consistently throws 8-9 innings and throws 120 pitches he will be shot by mid season. Now I think this coaching staff (Bunn) is a little more intelligent with the pitching staff and knows this.

I think we will be better than most think next year but not great. Should make the SEC tournament in the 4-6 seeding imo. Baseball is a team game and requires no great players to make a great team. That is what is great about the sport.

I agree. The strength of our team was our upperclassmen, but I'm going to be an optimist and chalk up some of the others' struggles as just being freshmen. Especially pitchers, coming in, getting used to a new way of doing things.

I really think most of our guys were better than what they showed during SEC play. Plus they really gelled there at the end and we went on a run, finishing just 1 game from Omaha. There's definitely plenty to build on.

What we lost this year was

Closer
Infield Defense
Hitting

Our decline in Home run production was from replacing two big studs in Matthes and May with two freshmen. Hopefully we will get more power out of the corner outfielders.

If we can get a closer out of our incoming pitchers, we should be ok there. We have two proven starters in Kilcrease and Morgan. Ideally we would use some of the other pitchers as set-up relievers .
