ADMIN NOTE: Political implications of today's shooting event...

Thanks for the thread, Earle.

I don't think it changes anyone's mind on who they vote for.

Some other stuff might change...but I think voters are in their bunkers come what may.

Also....I see posts on social media saying this seals it for Trump. To me that's nothing more than rhetoric.

Still a long way to go and no one knows how things end up, IMHO......

The GOP convention is next week so this will give him a boost in the polls to add to the convention bump a candidate gets.

We will have to find out more about the shooter before we know how this will affect the campaign. Was he just a nut like Hinkley or Guiteau? Or was he a Booth out for revenge?

Who was he? Did he have political connections? If he had any ties to the Biden campaign you might as well get ready for Trump 2.0.

I am sure they are already going through his cell phone and looking into his social media profile. I don’t think the dead have fourth amendment protection so his home is probably being gone over with a fine tooth comb already along with any electronic devices (I assume the shooter was a male) might have owned.

I think Trump will play this to the hilt, comparing himself to Teddy Roosevelt.

I don’t think it makes a big difference, but as close as the last two elections are a few thousand one way or the other can be a big deal. We shall see.

I would if I were running for office

Well this is beyond bad all around.

As far as the politics go I can't imagine this does anything other than massively fire up Trump supporters more than they already have been.

They stormed the Capitol 3 years ago because he lost.

Now even though he survived this shooting he has in a way been somewhat martyred through this attack.

I don't wish the man to be killed like that and this type of thing can not be tolerated in our country.

But whether this was by just a plain nut or a democratic nut this will probably be the catalyst to galvanize all his supporters and usher him back into office.

Again just a really bad occurrence all around that is most likely going to set our country back even further.

Well, there haven't been that many males, but the silhouette of his body lying on the roof appeared male...

I don't see any political implications. I do see security implications. Changes will be made for sure. A man has said he saw a man on top of that building, and told the police. They did nothing. At this point, no one knows if he's telling the truth. I'm sure he'll be questioned at length. This should not have happened. It's sad someone lost their life. This was a secret service fail.

During the Homestead Strike in 1892, the manager of the plant, Henry Clay Frick, was shot by an anarchist.
He later wrote his mother, "Was twice shot, but not dangerously."
Seem apropos.

The Democrats have had a tough couple of weeks.

- After years of rumored mental infirmity, Biden face-plants at the debate.

- He doesn't even seem to understand that he face-planted until a couple of days later.

- At that point, he blames it on being tired -- as if that would make it all better and rally the troops.

- Lots of smoke about "party leaders" (including Obama and Pelosi) trying to oust him.

- No fire with the smoke, but the "leaders" damn Biden with faint praise. At least publicly, Obama is deafeningly silent.

- Biden steadfastly refuses to quit, dividing the party even further.

- The press that has clearly been complicit in a cover-up of Biden't mental limitations has been pantsed. There's no way to deny that, and they know it.

- Now they're angry. Not only are they no longer shielding....they're nitpicking each and every slip, no matter how trivial.

- Biden does the Stephanopoulos interview. He isn't as bad as he was at the debate. But he's not a ton better. Worst of both worlds for the Democrats. Not bad enough to can him on the spot, but not good enough to inspire voters other than the ones he would have gotten anyway.

- Kamala Harris might be the only Democrat whose numbers are worse than Biden's. Yet she appears to be the frontrunner to replace him -- if that happens at all. Because, if they pass her over, the identity politics that the Democrats have played for decades would come back to bite them in the glutes.

- Today, somebody tries to kill Trump but fails. Trump now looks like a literal battle-scarred hero, and it's impossible to trash that without aggrandizing assassination attempts.

I'm no Trump supporter, and won't vote for him regardless. But could anyone have drawn up a better circular firing squad than that the Democrats have constructed for themselves?

The Democrats go up against the most defeatable Republican they've faced since maybe ever. And they're fumbling so badly on so many different fronts that a lot more than the Presidency is in play.
