Sort of an opinion poll here. Given all the things discussed over the past few days, what is your sentiment on the status of Shula's job.

I think the longer this goes with no comment from Witt, I tend to believe that it means doom and gloom for Shula. I don't think he'll be back next year.

I think the BOT and the Admin are looking at the mountain of cash and whether it is doable. They are probably discussing with all the bean counters and any contributor/alumni whether the discussion is even feasible! If the answer comes up yes, expect them to have a press conference. If the answer is no, then they will start looking at ways to get out of the contracts.

Re: Opinion : Is Shula Staying or Is He Fired

I don't think he's fired until they have a top-notch coach lined up to replace him. I also think that they already have a replacement and will let us know Monday. However, that's just my opinion... or is it :p

Re: Opinion : Is Shula Staying or Is He Fired

OUT: Shula

IN: Pete Carrol as HC, Stoops as DC, Spurrier as OC, and Barry Switzer as recruiting coordinator.

I heard this from a very reputable guy at Baskin Robbins.

Re: Opinion : Is Shula Staying or Is He Fired

No, based on the sherades of the past few days I'd say Shula will not be fired. I sincerely hope that Witt and Moore are not going to react to a bunch of fans on message boards that have their knickers in a twist and a bunch of trigger happy reporters by firing Shula.

Here's a clue for many of you. You need to analyze your desire to keep or fire Shula and figure out what part of that is based on pure emotion. When information about the BOT, Witt, Shula, or Moore comes your way then keep you emotions in check and try to analyze the information in a rational, logical manner.

Here are some logical reasons why Shula should be retained, and why I believe he will be retained:

1) He is not an old coach that is set in his ways. I strongly believe that he can make adjustments that will correct the situation.
2) Shula showed a tremendous amount of character in taking over at UA when we were facing the worst part of the sanctions.
3) Things like dicipline, work ethic, weight room lethargy, ...etc are Fixable. We can make our offensive linemen stronger, that is something that can be addressed.
4) We all knew we needed to be patient. Yet, as soon as our patients was put to the test we waffled and decided Shula must go. I certainly hope Witt and Moore show more patients then we do.
5) The lack of patients with a first time head coach who has worked extremely hard to help bail out his alma mater that got itself into a horrible jam will not be lost on the the coaches at the top of your lists.
6) Our lack luster performance this year is only partially Shula's doing.
7) There are definite positives to build upon, positives that Shula brought to this team.

Many on here need to think beyond just the last 3 games. Go back 4 years and think about where where Shula started, what obstacles he had to overcome, what his experience level was and how much he's learned so far. You just might come to the conclusion that Shula has done a good job under very difficult circumstances. Not a perfect job, but a good job.

I realize that this is an opinion thread and ill give it in a second. However, for about the third time i have seen that the lack of discipline problems are fixable if Shula is retained. How are they fixable if youve got the same guy calling all of the shots? Thats not logical consideration they have slowly evolving since he has been there into the undisciplined they are at now. Doesnt make much sense.

That being said, i think he is gone and they probably have someone lined up to take the reigns whoever it may be.

I also heard from the same guy that Joe Willie was granted 4 more years of eligibility and 2 new knees.

Re: Should he stay, change or go?

I jumped off the Shula bandwagon after the Hawaii game (when 3/4s of this board was singing his praise for the victory). Notwithstanding that, I think he should be given another year. I think Bama has turned the corner. The team showed improvement in the LSU and Barn games. Bama probably will not be able to find anyone better. Offensive changes need to be made.

Re: Should he stay, change or go?

I voted times up. 6-6 isnt good and the way we got to 6-6 is even worse. Struggling to beat Duke?? Not the Coach K Dukies but the football Dukies. Pathetic!!!

I do not agree with the "there is no one better available" line of thought. Money talks B.S. runs a marathon. plain and simple. my opinion though is that the right assistants can make a world of change. BUT, Shula has to be able to let the asst's do there job i.e. an offensive coord be an O.C. ane hire a capable O-line coach. As a former O-lineman I find it hard to watch when an Oline is doing badly or is coached badly.

Re: Should he stay, change or go?

I posed this question on another site. If CMS were on trial for being a good football coach, would there be enough evidence to convict him.

I was a Shula supporter until I tried to answer this question. He is a nice, genuine and pleasant man. He has kept the NCAA off of our door step. He is loyal to a fault to his Asst. Coaches and he really cares for his players. Those are great qualities in a human being, but can he coach up talent and win? That is where the rubber meets the road.

Your thoughts?

Re: Should he stay, change or go?

First of all, Shula was not hired to be a long term head coach, just a temporary coach to wade through the worst of the NCAA penalties. His time is up. He was not ready for this job nor was he qualified. Time after time he has proved that he is not the man for the job. MM and Witt need to get rid of him before it gets worse, and yes it could get worse. Hopefully we could get Saban or Spurrier(big IF). Finebaum claims that if we get Spurrier, we would win the SEC championship in is first year.

Re: Opinion : Is Shula Staying or Is He Fired

He will get one more year atleast. Coach Shula has done everything he was asked to do when he was hired and more. We all knew this was going to be a down year. I would like to see him gone as a fan but if I was his boss I would not get rid of him.

Re: Should he stay, change or go?

To me the problems run much deeper than 6-6. There is a lack of direction for the team, a severe lack of discipline, and a lack of respect from the players. He has to go.

Re: Should he stay, change or go?

When it comes to the University of Alabama and stability, they really have no connection.

Like a lot of fans, I was raised watching and cheering for Bama football, and I’ve been a fan for 27+ years. I’m very disturbed by the fans and possibly the University itself calling for Coach Mike Shula’s head, not only mere moments after the defeat by Auburn, but since the first loss this 2006 season all the way through.

Now we have speculation that he may lose his job or be forced to make changes to his staff? Change is good when it comes to looking at your mistakes and deciding on what means are necessary to better the outcome and I could even see some staff changes; but when you talk about firing a coach because the blame is placed on his shoulders for a program not measuring up to its great history and tradition…that’s plain crazy!

If he’s fired, it seems like the University is more interested in turning away from stability and structure and tearing down the house for a quick rebuild, as opposed to sticking with a coach both win, lose, or draw. Most of the coaches Alabama has had in the past years only barely have time to get their hands into the program, let alone their fingernails, and suddenly they’re booted because they don’t measure up. It’s silly, but people actually expect Bear Bryant in every coach. Last time I checked The Bear was a legend, and legends don’t come around that often; otherwise they wouldn’t be deemed as such.

You look at teams all across the nation, especially in the SEC, and you have a coach’s face for each individual college team. For Arkansas you have Houston Nutt, Philip Fulmer for Tennessee, and Auburn has Tommy Tuberville. But when it comes to Alabama, there’s really no name or face because you could stumble for a good five minutes naming all the coaches they’ve had for years. Plus, the scenario isn't one coach died to be replaced by another. Instead, it’s all politics and belly aching!

It’s sad to feel jerked around as a fan, like this. Aren’t we privileged to be fans, anyway? You hear “fans” in the stadium “booing” Coach Shula on national television because they don’t like the play calls, or because a player didn’t react on the field the way the fan feels they would if in the same situation. Plus, most of the fussing over Shula is speculation over what happens behind closed doors. The typical fan is now saying “oh, he’s a great guy, but his coaching style sucks”. Who’s played on the field for Coach Shula? The players.

If this is the way college football fans are going to change Tradition and help nosedive the University and its program into the ground, I hate to think I’m going down with this ship. Sure I could jump it, but I'm not a quitter, either.

For what it’s worth, Roll Tide, anyways! :BigA:
