Re: Opinion : Is Shula Staying or Is He Fired

This is not a comment on if or why he should stay or be fired. IMO he is retained for at least another season. Just a gut feel.

Re: Should he stay, change or go?

He just looks lost alot.

Re: Opinion : Is Shula Staying or Is He Fired

So, let's see, Coach Shula at 41 is "set in his ways" and is "too stuborn to change". I've even seen posters speak of his "legendary stuborness". That is pure Bull Schit, and goes right to the heart of the emotion versus logic argument.

Now, he has no character. Bama bailed him out a few years ago. Idiotic, Idiotic, Idiotic.

"Nothing has changed in 4 years". GOOD GRIEF!

* Year 1, no spring parctice and the staff pretty much in turmoil (not his fault!).

* Year 2, Brodie goes down in the FIRST GAME, Castile goes out, ...etc, also not his fault.

* Year 3, 10-2, our most explosive offensive player breaks his leg and is out for at least 1.5 seasons, perhaps forever. Our starting center gets knocked out of the game agains LSU, perhaps the most talented team in the SEC, who we took to overtime.

* Year 4, the rebuilding year. None of us were happy with the teams performance this year, and much has to be fixed. But we lost a ton of talent from last year, or do y'all not agree?

The point is that every year had it's fires that had to be put out. Each year something new had to be addressed. Each year our depth got thinner and thinner due to sanctions. Now, with sanctions behind us, Shula has a chance to start turning things in the right direction. If he is really incapable of change and none of the issues are addressed next year then I'll be the first to show him the door. But most people on here are letting the emotions associated with our losses this year dictate what they type. It's incredible that somehow, since we had a bad year, that NONE of the monumental obstacles that Shula had to overcome matter. As if they simply didn't exist.

Look at it this way. If we had not been sanctioned and a new coach had 4 Full years, instead of 3.5 to prove himself, then I would agree that 4 years should be enough for him to prove himself. Given the circumstances under which Shula started, and had to work since he's been here, I believe he has urned the support of the administration and fans to be given one more year to show that he can lead this team to success.

Re: Should he stay, change or go?

I voted stay another year with coordinator change. And when we're 9-3, even 8-4, next year I'll be the first one in line saying "Next year will be even better." (Anything less than that and THEN we'll be justified in screaming for his head, but right now it's too early--let me explain:). True, he's GOT to make some changes, but if he does, all this speculation will be proven to be what it is--conjecture by a grumpy mob that's dissatisfied by a crappy season that we knew would be crappy five years ago. Just because we went 10-2 last year doesn't result in automatic success this year; bear with me for a minute because I feel like I'm a lone voice of reason in this, no matter what Finebum says.

I remember when Dubose was HC and everyone complained when he wasn't doing well that he should wear earphones/headset during the games. I mean, there was genuine outrage over this simple little "problem." And now, everyone wants to suggest that Shula "looks like he doesn't know what's going on" or "looks dumbfounded" based on a snap judgement from a video or photo, not on personal knowledge.

I won't dispute that changes need to be made; this is big-time college football and that's what coaches do when they're in it for the long haul, they analyze their performance and that of their coaches, and then they make the changes they believe will put them in a position to succeed. CMS made a mistake, a lot of people believe, by hiring Rader in the first place (--and I agree it was a "friend hire"), and the OL coaching appears to be non-existant. True, Capps sucks and it seems like it took the whole year for them to take him out, but the OL is going to be better next year, as will the D, as will the QB...

If we start changing now, AGAIN, we're putting ourselves in the backseat of big-time football AGAIN. Come on, folks, this is the year everyone pegged five years ago to be a struggle; I know he's won some ugly games and lost some we should have won, all coaches go through that. That 0-20 line when losing in the 4th qtr is a telling statistic, true, but it tells a story of a team that's had no depth for YEARS. Now that we're getting depth back, with a string of (better than) top 20 recruiting classes, we'll soon be in reload mode rather than struggling to get through the 4th quarter. I don't want to fire a loyal, competitive, competent (--no matter what he looks like when he's thinking, he's competent or he wouldn't have gotten the job in the first place) HC when his best years could be right ahead of him. Even if we do a fire an hire, there's no guaranteeing we'll get someone who has the passion for this program that CMS has, or even that we'll get someone who'll be a winner like we need, and potentially already have. CMS was hired for that potential, and he's just now getting the depth in place to be able to make a good run at greatness.

Truth: You can't lose the talent we lost last year and expect greatness--period. If CMS makes the necessary changes, and learns from his mistakes these past four years--and he will--then the Tide will Roll next year and the next. After that it's reload time, whereas over the past 6 years it's just been struggle to get enough people on the field to compete.

Did I see a Clash reference?

Should I stay or should I go now?
Should I stay or should I go now?
If I go there will be trouble
An' if I stay it will be double
So come on and let me know...

I think many fans see that line is ringing more true.

I disagree with those that say Coach Shula should be retained. The measure of how good a coaching staff is determined is by performance improvement! The Crimson Tide did not improve from the first game to the final game of the season. All games were carbon copies of each other. AD Mal Moore and Pres. Witt must assess this factor with the thought of retaining the current staff. Arkansas was the most improved IMO and demonstrates that they have a staff that is properly coaching and tactically engaging other SEC opponents. This is what the Alabama fan wants to see. Wins would be nice, but PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT IS ESSENTIAL!!

What is a coach supposed to do?
As a fan I would like to think that a coach is in control of a few things. I know that a coach can't execute for the players. But I do want to see improvement and when we are making the same mistakes in the last game that we were making in the first game, I think the coaching staff and the head coach are to blame for that.
I also believe that a coach is in control of the decisions that is made in the game management category. Wasting timeouts and poor decisions on 4th down, as well as questionable play calling is all things that the coach should be able to control. These are categories that I believe that Shula is just inexperienced and right now incompetent.
I love Shula as a person and will always respect him as an Alabama fan; I just think that he isn't ready to be a head coach in the SEC right now.

He's on the way out.

Whatever happens, it needs to happen fast. I lean towards keeping CMS for another year if he makes meaningful changes in coaching. Except for the Miss St debacle:eek: , I think the poor wins tend to reflect worse on CMS than the losses do and you cant really blame the coaches for the Ark loss.

So who do you blame for sending out a kicker who had already missed on 3 tries? (including a PAT)

From what I remember there wasn't much of a choice because Money was injured and not ready to kick FGs. If after missing 2, CMS had brought in Money anyway and he either missed or re-injured himself, that wouldn't have been very good either.

What I never understood and maybe I just missed it is why Money could kickoff but not kick field goals. Im not saying there is something wrong with that but I never caught if he was hurt or missing them. Anybody know what was the deal with that?

Thanks for all you have done Coach Shula. You will be remembered as the Coach that led us through the dark times........You are a class act.
