Strange....he had a public appearance just yesterday.

Does make you wonder if he was somehow holding out to Easter. Then, having made it to that milestone, was at peace with letting go.

I agree. I know you can’t just decide to die but I do think people can will themselves to hang on for a certain period of time.

This is the news I woke up to this morning. There are a lot of mixed feelings about this pope, but one thing that cannot be disputed was his empathy for the poor. I think it's fitting that he made it until Easter. Regardless of how one feels about the pope (or the church in general) I think it's admirable that anyone would dedicate their lives to the type of devotion these people make. The bad ones are the only ones who get the headlines, but the majority who go on to quietly serve God and the people have my complete respect.

Francis was always haunted by accusations that he was either complicit, or turned a blind eye to the abuses of the Argentine dictatorship during The Dirty War.

There was a very strong Catholic tinge to the dictatorship. Videla was an ardent Catholic. Those expats I know always talked about how much influence Opus Dei had on the junta.

This reminds me of one of Ed Rollins's many political stories in his book. He was the lead consultant for Michael Huffington's 1994 Senate campaign (when Mike still was in the closet and married to Arianna) and had a meeting with him at one point. Rollins btw is Catholic. At one point he had a meeting with Michael and was stunned when the rumors of his sexuality were percolating that Michael didn't even try all that hard to deny he was gay (note: that was the question, he turned out to be bi). ("It wasn't that he was offended; he didn't protest ENOUGH"). But he figured out real quick that Michael Huffington was only running for the Senate because Arianna wanted it (she had dated Jerry Brown and urged him to run for the Senate in 1982 so it's not just speculation). He didn't even really care that much about that part. It was the fact Michael was hiding exactly how rich he was from his wife and Ed figured out that all the rich guy really wanted to do was fly airplanes, ride motorcyles, you know, play with rich guy toys.

He assessed it as: "This guy wants to be a Senator about as badly as I want to be the pope."
