Pope Says Sunday For God, Not Sports

So why hasn't he spoken out long before now? People have attended sporting events and various types of entertainment for YEARS...so why NOW??? Isn't it like locking the barn after the horse is gone?

For a religion that covered up the antics of pedophile priests and swept it under the carpet for years, why criticize people for going to a football game or movie on Sunday.

After the scandal that the Catholic Church allowed to happen, I don't think many people are going to pay much attention to a Pope who tells them that Sunday is for God - not sports or entertainment. Better a movie or sporting event than what those priests did to little boys!!!!!!

"And though she be but little, she is fierce"

From: "Seabiscuit"

A quote from Shakespeare's play "A Midsummer's Night Dream".
Act III Scene II

O, when she's angry, she is keen and shrewd!
She was a vixen when she went to school.
And though she be but little, she is fierce.

Not sure that I agree with his rationale, but I wish that more people would take some time out for God. Does it really matter which day? I think that the requirement to observe the Sabbath was lifted, wasn't it?

The Pope is a religionist.

His power is dependent upon the committment of the masses to follow the dictates of his power structure, the Catholic Church.

I don't see his statement as much different than the NFL advertising its Sunday schedule.

Both depend on donations from the faithful for their power and livlihood.

I think folks should "take more time out for God" as well. I just don't believe that it is necessary to have an intermediary, like a tollbooth, between myself and God.

It's free, you know...

Then I guess you can do anything you want to on Sunday - go to a sporting event or a movie - or whatever.

But what if you do not believe in God?</font>

In that case, the entire issue is extraneous.

I wonder if Pope Gregory IX allowed heretics to be burned on Sunday. That was the ultimate in entertainment for the medieval period. It was like the Super Bowl.

Announcer: "Martin of Burrengough, you've just been sentenced by the pope to burn at the stake for dancing with pixies. What are you going to do now?"

Martin: "I'm going to EuroDisney... or hell -- one or the other. It's all the same."
