"During Tuesday’s practice Freddie Kitchens began to feel ill - dizzy, light-headed - and was sent to the training room. After being evaluated by the team’s medical staff it was determined that he should be taken to the hospital for more evaluation and testing. During that process, a CT scan revealed a defect to his aorta that required surgery, which he had Tuesday night at the Arizona Heart Institute. According to the doctors who performed the surgery, it went very well and the early prognosis is positive. The Kitchens family is grateful to everyone who has and continues to extend their support, well wishes and prayers.”
That's pretty crazy. Prayers to him and his family. He is younger than I am and I am 40.

Wow. The defect could have been there since birth. Hopefully it's fixed now and he'll never have to deal with it again.

Freddie certainly has my prayers.

Prayers sent..I'm glad the prognosis is good..After undergoing open heart surgery myself..The recovery is soooooo painful..But..If he gets out of bed & moving around right after surgery..Recovery is a lot more tolerable & goes by a lot quicker..Being so young..They had me out of bed within the hour I woke up in recovery..Now I was aided by plenty of morphine shots..The quicker you get to walking around..The better recovery goes..Medicine has come a long way when it comes to this type of surgery..I can attest to that 1st hand..

Wow, good thing they were able to convince him to go to the hospital, probably saved his life. Freddie is as macho as they come, but some things you just don't mess around with.

Get well Freddie.

Hate to hear this. I have had my aortic heart valve replaced and recovery is painful. I agree getting up when the doctors will allow it is helpful, but anyone who does that needs to be careful for several months. I didn't listen and tore open my sternum a couple of centimeters a few weeks after surgery. I had to have it rewired again a couple of months later. Recovery was much, much worse the second time. Follow the doctor's orders. I pray Freddie will do that and recovers well.

Valve replacement is not fun. I had my aortic and mitrale valves replaced six months ago, and have got to have it redone pretty soon. The new valves are crushing my red blood cells, causing severe anemia. Here's hoping Freddie will be OK.

When he was a kid, folks called him 'Fat Freddy'. Freddy was always big and strong. Catching a pass from Freddy was painful. Sometimes is was more like he threw the ball thru you, rather than to you. Freddy has put on a lot of Quarterback camps for kids in Alabama. He's a very good un... Praying for a speedy recovery.

Ole Freddy was tough as a nail when he was wearing that crimson jersey for us.
If I remember correctly..Freddy played hard on & off the field..Maybe a little to hard off the field..LOL..I remember hearing tales of him putting away lots of beer at party's..Nothing wrong with that..He was being a college kid & enjoying his college days..Or am I remembering wrong????..

I am a few years older than Freddie, and I remember him coming along in both baseball and football. All accounts of Freddie on this thread are true, even the nick name..lol. He was always a good guy, played hard (on and off the field), tough and he was very smart. Over the years life leads us down different paths by Freddie is a good guy, I wish him a speedy recovery.

I always liked Freddie when he was at Alabama. Hope his recovery is strong & fast, just like Freddie. Maybe one day we see him back at Alabama, I hope, heck we pay assistants like the NFL.

Roll Tide Freddie!

My money's on Freddie to make a quick recovery. Freddie knows pain and how to bounce back from it. He never played behind an decent line and took more hits that any other QB I have ever seen. Even Pat Dye said on Finebaum that Freddie was one tough kid. I bet that he woke up feeling better than the Sunday after he played Florida in their NC year when Bobby Stoops was coaching the Florida D. And he will not have to go out and play a week after the operation.
