Prince as a guitar player

IMO, the best living guitar player is Carlos Santana.

Some of my favs are Yngwie Malmsteen, Robin Trower, Stanley Jordan, Eddie Van Halen, Eric Clapton (My Idol) and I'm partial to Tommy Shaw since my dad played in a band with him in Mobile when they were kids. I've also worn out the chip on my mp3 player with the Allman Bros. Live at the Fillmore East.

I don't know if I have one favorite...but here are some of my favorites:

Living (in no particular order): Mark Knopfler, Alex Lifeson, Brian Setzer, Dave Gilmore, Rick Nielsen (can't explain, just like his style), and The Edge are probably my favorites.

Deceased: Hendrix, SRV, Chet Atkins and many more...

I don't think it would be fair to crown one player the best. I could make a list of those I enjoy listening to but it would be a lengthy one.

Thanks for reminding me about Chet! Masterful guitar. The Edge awesome and don't forget about Brian May!

If you ever want to scratch your head, wondering what you've just heard, try Junior Brown. The guit-steel is his weapon of choice.

i've seen him twice. at his most recent venture through atlanta (at the variety playhouse) he put on one of the best shows i had ever seen.

just him, bass, player, and some old dude tearing it up on a four piece drum set. the bass player and drummer took a break during one of junior's solos, junior never stopped playing.

"peelin' taters" and "two ron's dont make it right" are two of my favorites, but he sure has a way with lyrics as well as being a mean picker.

there are really different realms of "great" guitar players.

there are the popular music greats, like hendrix, srv, page, and so. then there are the purely esoteric greats like satriani, vai, eric johnson, steve morse, et al.

the former play music that is consumed by the public at large, whereas the latter are essentially only listened to by musicians.

technically, guys like vai and morse are almost untouchable by the popular players. i know that's blasphemy, but it's true. but on the flip side, a lot of their music (most) is not even listenable...even for guitar heads. you might put on some of their music to learn techniques or simply say "how in the world is he doing that?", but pretty much nobody listens to that stuff for pure enjoyment. it's almost like watching the world's strongest man contest or something...being awed by something only a handful of people on the planet can do.

that's why van halen is so unique. he's a technical freak like vai and the rest, but he was able to bridge the gap between esoteric playing and music that average people actually want to listen to.

as for being underrated or unappreciated, billy gibbons may be the greatest guitar player who is never mentioned as one of the greatest guitar players by average people. as for blues, he's better than srv ever was, and more unique too. in fact, lots have said that hendrix considered gibbons to be the best guitar player he'd ever seen, and this was when absolutely no one knew who gibbons was.

but there are so many great ones out there that ranking them is impossible. what about metheny? dimeola? although he's not all that difficult to play, how unique is david gilmore's style? does anyone blow out the hard rock jams better than gary moore? has there ever been a better speed metal/thrash jammer than the dimebag? has anyone ever rocked harder than angus young?

bottom line is there are tons of great ones in their own way, and they're all a billion times better than i could ever imagine being.

rock on folks!!!

I have heard tales of good guitarists canceling gigs to go see Junior Brown. I have one of his CDs and he is amazing.

A guy I saw here at the old Rockerfeller's years ago that I thought was smokin' is Craig Chaquico.

I really like John Mayer since he's moved away from the bubble gum stuff.

Prince is a magnificent guitar player. I have a bunch of his CDs--a bunch that weren't very popular and didn't have the big hits, and the ones that were popular. I also have the two that he has released within the past 3-4 years. 3121 is outstanding, and I highly recommend it. the man is unbelievable. He didn't want to market himself as a Jimi Hendrix or Clapton. He wrote, produces, played all of the instruments, and sang all of the parts on his first few albums. He's an incredible talent, and wanted to be known as a musician and entertainer, not a guitar player. Although he's one of the best.

Wow , this is kinda funny . Prince is far from being any kind of great guitarist . The girl used to play almost all of the stuff . He's had 22 years to make some dramatic improvement and hasn't .

There are many different levels and those who do not play wouldn't really "get it" . To people who do not play I'm a good guitarist , when I'm actually not very good . Others that play can see through the smoke & mirrors to a players limitations . Limited = Prince .

Buddy Guy is great and very underappreciated . Saw him in Atlanta in the early 90's and in N.O. a few years ago . BG blows BB King away . Saw both at the JVC Fest and he made BB seem like it was time to hang it up .

IMO , Clapton is quite overrated . His most famous riff - Layla , was a gift from Duane Almond . DA gave him the "signature riff" while goofing around down in Muscle Shoals . Where would EC be without it ? Back to Sunshine of Your Love ?

J.Hendrix - Great innovator(so was Les Paul & E.Van Halen) . Sloppy(drugged) , note missing guitarist .

Of the new guys , Mark Tremonti is very good . Slash is still great . Randy Rhoads was incredible . Warren D. Martini had his day . George Lynch was pretty good . Kirk Hammett also had his time at the top .

IMO if you want to hear the best player to ever pick up a guitar , try Vinnie Moore . Malmsteen would run away from VM . Makes YM sound rude , sloppy and quite non-melodic when comparing the two . There is no comparison .

Obviously everyone has their own preference , just offering a players perspective . JOMO .

You and I seem to have a similar perspective . The 1st time I read your post , I missed the reference to DimeBag . It reminded me of some other thrashers . Alex Skolnick from Testament and John Petrucci of Dream Theater . They were around about the same time frame - mid/late 80's to the early 90's .

There were also some great guitar tandems during that era .

Iron Maiden - Dave Murray , Adrian Smith
Judas Priest - KK Downing , Glen Tipton
Whitesnake - Vivian Campbell , Adrian Vandenberg
Queensryche - Chris DeGarmo , Michael Wilton
Fates Warning - Jim Matheos , Frank Aresti
Tesla - Frank Hannon , Tommy Skeoch
Scorpians - Mathias Jabs , Rudolph Schenker

I'm having an 80's flashback !

Oh man...Steve Morse...amazing! Saw him in the Dregs multiple times back in the day...

Tipton & Downing...saw Priest live in Gainesville, FL in the late 70s. Great show!

Gibbons...saw ZZ Top in Tuscaloosa in the mid 80s. He is very good. ZZ's radio hits are less so, but live their were great!

Lifeson...Rush in Mobile, early 80s. His playing was always somewhat overshadowed by Neil Peart's you-gotta-be-kidding-me drumming, but Alex was great. One of my favorite--of many--Rush grooves was "Witch Hunt" from the Moving Pictures album. But I'm a big fan of Rush.

*ends rock concert flashback*

You're right about Lifeson . Great with the axe but when you see Rush in person , it's real hard not to watch NP . ..... La Villa Strangiato = awesome .

Although the Allman Bros. have been mentioned here, I saw no mention of Duane. Another favorite of mine, but somewhat obscure, was Luther Allison! He was a great blues guitarist.
