Promises to program by Athlectic Dept.?

Has anyone heard of any of the promises UA made to CJW?
Or has anyone seen any positive movement by the Athletic Dept. toward the Baseball Program.
I've been out of touch lately and just wanted to get caught up.
 
If I remember the article in the Tuscaloosa News (take that for what it's worth) they talked about renovations to the locker room, a new weight room, indoor batting cages, additional permanent seating at Sewell-Thomas, sky boxes at Sewell-Thomas and a new scoreboard. Alas, there was no mention of a hyphen for the sign at the Joe.
 
On Thursday, July 20th, I was in my car hearing Vince Ferara(sp) show in the afternoon on AM 1420 and he was playing a clip from Chris Stewart's morning show with Coach Jim Wells.

He was talking to him about not taking the LSU job and improvements to Sewell Thomas. In the long run, Bama is going to have new permanent seats just like the ones on first base. The 3rd base side is going to be all concrete just like the 1st base side. The bleachers are going to be moved to the outfield , just beyond the fence.

The playing surface (diamond) is going to be realligned so that everyone in the stadium will see the field. There will be a NEW PRESS BOX and 12 new Club level seats added to Sewell Thomas. The team will have a better clubhouse and dressing rooms. I am not sure about other stuff that I let off.

(This will all take place after the 2007 Season)

Prior to next year, A BRAND NEW SCOREBOARD will be in Sewell Thomas for 2007! (I HOPE)

Yes, I heard that as well. But also heard the AD is slow to respond to getting to what he promised to do. I think CJW was being kind and giving the standard team response. I haven't seen or heard any positive movement in the last month from the University.
Also, while on the topic of helping out the program, we need all baseball fans to make a strong push to get better radio coverage for Alabama Baseball.
 
We need more fans to come to the games before we add skyboxes :conf2:

Although, asthetically it will look great, it doesn't make sense financially.

Sewell-Thomas has rarely filled to capacity as it stands right now...


However, I fully support a new scoreboard! I wish they would use the money that they will pour into seating and luxury skyboxes into something that will yield a more productive product.

I am trying not to be harsh, just realistic.

Seriously, do we need increased seating at Sewell-Thomas.... :cool2:

Don't worrk rk, not a penny of your tuition will go to increased seating, or to anything else that goes into the Joe. That will be paid for from Athletic Department funds. Your tuition does not go to support athletics at UA. To the contrary, the Athletic Department generally makes a huge contribution to the general fund at UA every year. If you are going to complain about general funds being spent unwisely, you may want to pick on the quarter-million dollar fountains that are being installed on campus.

PlayBall! brings up a very serious, embarrassing problem that absolutely must be addressed - radio coverage. The current situation is inexcusably pathetic, and whoever is in charge of lining up affiliates has failed miserably. One cannot even listen to a broadcast on FM in the very city in which the University is located. The only option, of course, is 1420, which has a range of about two miles, so that some residents within the Tuscaloosa city limits cannot even pick it up. As for the statewide situation? If you're an Alabama baseball fan among the 565,000 or so who reside in Mobile and Baldwin counties and would like to listen to a game, forget it. That is, unless you're desperate enough to link together several coathangers while covering yourself in aluminum foil and pointing towards Monroeville or Brewton, the southernmost outposts of Crimson Tide baseball on the air.

Also, rolltide.com needs to improve as well. It may sound trifling to some, but why is Alabama the only school in the conference that doesn't provide conference-only statistics in addition to the overall numbers? It used to, but for some reason quit a couple of years ago. Also, live stats for every game would be nice, not just a handful. Of course, a lot of the internet problems will never be resolved due to the fact that the school is not part of the network that maintains the webpages of most other schools in the conference.

The scoreboard and hyphen would also be at the top of my list of priorities, at least short-term.
 
The entire sports information-media, promotions...needs to be seriously over-hauled. If you get 2 miles from the 1420 AM tower you don't get any coverage. I live acorss the river about 5 miles from campus and can't get the games after dark. I was in Mobile for some of the SEC Tournament and couldn't get the Alabama games on the radio and depending on whether they were on Fox South or College Sports South you could only get a few games on TV.
There are alot of Alabama Baseball fans around the state and the fan base would grow if the games could be broadcast beyond the downtown Tuscaloosa area.
But the entire promotions and media thing for baseball ranks about a 2 on a scale of 1-10.
 
Thank you jo jo, our radio situation is a awful. We may have the two best guys doing our radio with Crane and Stewart.
 
I live in Dothan and there's no baseball coverage here, but I just pay $5.95 a month for a few months and listen on the internet through yahoo broadcasts. It's always screwed up the first two or three games (aka Winthrop last year) but it's an option for those who have the capabilities.

This is somewhat off topic and looking a bit ahead, I suppose, but the 2008 season will mark the 25th anniversary of one of the greatest teams in Alabama history, and the University should make an effort to commemorate it. Hopefully they can round up as many of the players as possible (Dave Magadan, Craig Shipley, Frank Velleggia, Alan Dunn, Fermin Lake, Allan Stallings, et al) for a pre-game ceremony or something to that effect, at the very least.

Something should definitely be done to recognize Dave Magadan's Golden Spikes-winning 1983 season, the single greatest offensive performance in the history of college baseball. Major League history is marked by several "famous numbers" representing some significant statistical accomplishment: 755 (& 714); 56; 2,632 (& 2,130), etc. For Alabama Baseball history, there is one that stands above all others: .525
 
I agree with Jojo. Something should be done to honor the 1983 team. Barry Allen could drop by Bruno's on the way to the game and pick up a cake for them. He could even get an extra cupcake for Mags.
