Is his name pronounced E-Lee or E-Lie.
Plant head coach Robert Weiner had high praise for Ely and was excited about his decision.
"Phillip Ely has truly been one of the most incredible stories in the history of our school and our football program," Weiner said. "He is a great leader and always puts the team first. Though he has accomplished numerous feats, he has never once mentioned an individual goal to me or anybody else.
"Phillip is 19-0 as a varsity starter as we won state championships the past two seasons. He was also 6-0 as a starter on the JV team as a freshman. I think that shows that he is a winner and [Alabama] is getting a winner."
Ely, who many thought would be headed to LSU, says that the thought of playing in Tuscaloosa was just too much to pass up. It was an opportunity that only recently became a possibility.
OK. While I'm in a panic about QB depth and future,,,,, the staff has done sneaked around and added diversity to the position. The knock on Ely is size and arm-strength. More specifically often tends to throw a "soft" ball rather than zip it. More west-coast than vertical suited. BUT,,, his strength is the versatility to run(and comprehend) multiple offences. In the matter of a few days I've been sent from hand-wringing about only two scholarship pro-type back-up QBs and one burning a red-shirt to..... '10 G-Mac/AJM+ B Sims... '11 AJ/P Sims+B Sims.... THEN P Sims/Ely+B Sims. Now I'm getting that warm-n-fuzzy feeling about QBs but,,,,, NOBODY TELLS ME NOTHING!!!!!
I saw the same thing, and he did very well in the game I watched. His team played against T. Bridgewater's team in 7 on. They lost, but Ely played well and was very accurate. I was wondering at the time why Bama hadn't approached him since the transfer of Star Jackson. He was on espn last week in a 7 on 7 and this kid throws a tight ball. Didn't have a clue that he even had a interest in us at the time, but during the showcase he stood out as the better QB in the group.
Welcome home....RTR
I agree 100% with ya RedStar..He plays with & against lots of D1 talent..He is an obvious winner & a true leader..I love the talent Coach Saban is bringing in..But most important..These kids are outstanding kids on & off the field..Coach Saban & our coaching staff are the best in the business for a reason..I like QB's from big time high school programs.
I liked Brodie, but that's one of the things that scared me about him when he committed to us. Higher ranked guys from big time programs pan out a lot more often than higher ranked guys from 1A schools.
Plant plays a tough schedule in front of big crowds, and is full of talented players. If I'm not mistaken they played on national TV last year, and probably will this year as well.
Congrats Phillip and welcome aboard. BTW, I hope Blake Sims does end up playing QB at some point, even if just for a few snaps. Can you imagine Verne trying to call a Bama game in a few years? Hilarious. . .
Verne Lundquist: "Blake Sims is in the game at QB for the Tide . . . What's that Gary? Oooh. . . .I mean Phillip Sims is in the game at QB for the Tide. What's that Gary? Really? My mistake, I mean Phillip Ely."
Nineteen games.
Nineteen wins.
That best sums up Phillip Ely's tenure as Plant's starting quarterback. Heading into his senior season, perfection as a starter is something not even the great Robert Marve or Aaron Murray can claim before him.
Remind him of that, and the Plant senior QB stays humble. He knows his success can be attributed to Plant's dominance as an overall program just as much as it can to his ability.
But you can't deny these facts.
No Plant QB has been more clutch in big games as early in his career as Ely.
TAMPA - Plant High quarterback Phillip Ely has been extended an invitation to play in the annual U.S. Army All-American Bowl Game.
Panthers coach Robert Weiner said Ely is one of the first in the nation to receive confirmation of his spot on the final roster. Ely is expected to get his formal invitation during a ceremony in the fall.
"Obviously, it's a great honor to get an invitation to a national game and such a prestigious game," Weiner said. "Phillip is certainly deserving of that spot. I don't know anybody that's worked harder. It's great that he's receiving some individual accomplishment because he's a young man who has always had team goals."
TAMPA - Winning three state championships in the past four years put Plant High School's football-program football program in the national spotlight. That exposure will increase this year as the Panthers meet Bradenton Manatee on ESPN in this year's Kickoff Classic.
The preseason game, at Manatee on Aug. 27, is a rematch of last year's Class 5A state championship game, which Plant won 21-14. "It's exciting because of the with Manatee" Plant coach Robert Weiner said "We need to get ourselves ready because they're returning a lot of good players and will be a good team again this year. "It's a special thing for all of the players to know that they're going to be seen by the nation."
Great pick-up. He's a 4 star according to one of the services, and he also participated in the Elite 11 QB camp this past summer, so he must be pretty good. Never lost a game as a starter on the HS level in two years, 19-0. Only knock on him is that he is 6'1"
How tall is McElroy?

Plant senior quaterback Phillip Ely makes a surprise decision by choosing defending national champion Alabama while Panthers offensive lineman Tony Posada will play for storied Michigan.
