Ely has been interested in Bama for a while and he has visited Bama and shown interest in them throughout the process. You are right, he did not list Bama among his favorites but that changed obviously. Reportedly he did not receive the Bama offer until just the last couple of weeks.When did our recruitment of Phillip begin?? I noticed on rivals we aren't even listed as one of his prospective schools.

High three-star quarterback Phillip Ely (Tampa, Fla./Plant) committed to the Crimson Tide Wednesday during a 5 P.M. press conference.
Rated as the nation's No. 15 player at his position, Ely selected Alabama over LSU, Clemson, Wake Forest and Ole Miss.
Rutgers, South Florida, Vanderbilt, Iowa State, Michigan State, Tennessee, Cincinnati and Arizona State are among his other offers.
Plant's Phillip Ely, A four-star prospect ranked the No. 5 quarterback recruit in the nation by Rivals.com, announced Wednesday afternoon that he'll be playing for Alabama at the next level. He also owned offers from Arizona State, Clemson, LSU, Mississippi, USF and Wake Forest, among others.

Phillip Ely, Scout.com three-star quarterback from Plant High School in Tampa, Fla., announced a surprise commitment Wednesday afternoon to the University of Alabama. The Tide has not been mentioned as a contender throughout the recruiting process, but it was known he had serious interest in the Tide.
The Alabama coaching staff decided to offer Ely a scholarship a couple of weeks ago. He kept things very quiet about the offer from the national champions and many felt like Notre Dame was his school of choice.
