Any guitar players have a favorite tuning? I've been experimenting with open D a lot lately, I just like the bluesy mellow feel to it.

open D and open G for delta type slide playing - G (or A) is more country delta-ish
sounding to me while D (or E) is more Chicago-ish ala" Elmore James...although Robert Johnson, Son House & others. used open D for some of their stuff

On acoustic sometimes I like the drone of dropped D tuning

I tune down a full step (d,g,c,f,a,d) on solo acoustic so my E chord is actually a D, A is a G...etc that fits my vocals better - D sounds a little darker to me also

I only consider myself a semi-guitar player, and I can only play a few songs, mainly on acoustic.

But my favorite tuning is a half-step down, otherwise i just stay in standard. I guess im not learned enough to experiment enough

I'm too lazy to bother with switching and re-tuning so , I created and stored an effect to simulate the drop-D sound . Click & done . :cool2:

I like the D-A-D-G-A-D tuning alot. you can play a lot of darker folk with it and it is good for irish tunes as well.

i've also taken to using a spring capo on the top 5 strings at the 2nd fred leaving the low e open and playing out of the Dm (actually an eminor) position. gives me the "drop d" sound and i can usually sing better in Em than i can in Dm

I usually play a standard tuned guitar...but I tune it down a 1/2 step. I think it makes my tone better. I'll play in open G a good bit...because I play lots of John Lee Hooker songs and that's what he used.

Hope this helps....
