At least we got mentioned well they basically said that last year was a fluke or a miracle :mad2:

No one gives Alabama respect not even you. Just give them time and theyll be national champs once again!!!! – MW

A: Yeah, Alabama should be national champs again … several years from now. The offense doesn’t appear to be anything special even though Ken Darby is a stud pro running back prospect and the receiving corps should be the best the program has had in several years. The defense, while good, will certainly take a big step back after dominating last season. Don’t forget how the team was this close to an average 2005. You don’t always get all the big kicks. You don’t always get fumbles that go out of the end zone in key moments (like in the 6-3 win over Tennessee), and you don’t always go 3-1 in games decided by three points. With that said, this is a more-than-solid team that’ll go to a bowl and win at least eight games thanks to a stunningly breezy schedule. Another ten-win season isn’t out of the question.

he is correct in syaing that we WERE that close to being average.
There is no doubt about it.
The previous 2005 could have been the same as 2004. We had a load of balls not bouncing our way in 04 and the tide turned in 05. These things are attributed to metal awareness, as witnessed in the 04 LSU game.... anyone want to recall what happened after the blown call.... absolutely nothing...
Last year was a turning point and it has instilled something in our boys that says THIS IS ALABAMA FOOTBALL.

Get ready for a high tide warning because down arizona Bama's gonna ROLL.

I agree. If we had a just a few things bounce our way in 04, stayed away from the injury bug, things could have really been much different. Funny, I remember Tennessee seemed to have things bounce their way during 04 and got by w/ a few close games. They could have easily lost 4 or 5 that year. This past year in 2005, we finally got the better end of those bounces and had a great 10 win season - the Vols did not. Also, I find it a bit funny that most analysts blame our low ranking due to losing 7 defensive starters that contributed to one of the nations top defenses 2 years in a row. However, I was watching the College Gameday preseason review on ESPN this weekend and it was mentioned that Ohio State's only task was to replace 9 defensive starters! Boy, they can lose 9 starters on D (6 of those guys went in the draft) and still be preseason #1 - but they say that Bama has questions on defense. I guess Ohio St does not. I've also read that one of the other reasons is that we lost our senior QB and we now have an unproven sophomore at the helm. I agree, but isn't USC and Texas in the same boat as far as that is concerned? I really don't care about the rankings, but I guess I just don't understand their (voters) logic. Oh well, nothing to it, but to just prove them wrong!

One man's opinion - meet grain of salt.
As far as being that close to being average last year, I contend it's what you do with the ball when the bounce goes your way that makes the difference. Just ask Tennessee, who probably feels like they were that close to being great last year.

I think the difference between average and champion IS very small. Every national title winner has a game or two that they win on the bounce of a ball. So his point is a little moot. While I agree with his guestimate on our record. I disagree with his reasoning.

Bottom line is if Shula were not the son of a legend, everyone would think he is doing a great job and is a up and coming coach like Urban Mayer, but because of his last name, anything less than undefeated is a dissappointment. Shula simply has a different bar set over him. Such pressure crushes most men, but Shula grew up with it, so in a way he was born to be the Alabama coach.

We haven't yet proven that we can sustain excellence. We won 10 games in 1996 and won 4 the next year. We won 10 games in 1999 and won 3 the next year. We won 10 games in 2002 and won 4 the next year. The voters have nothing in recent history to make them think we can put together consecutive good years. I know that the teams we had a few years ago shouldn't impact this year's rankings, but they do. That's where our low ranking comes from.

I guess his statement completly invalidates UT's national championship then, right? I mean it was only because of a butterfingered Clint Stoener that UT managed to stay undefeated.

Yeah, and you don't always:

Give up 4th-and-19 against UT in overtime, or

Get a ridiculous excessive celebration penalty during overtime that loses you the Arkansas game, or

Have a receiver brutalized in the endzone by an LSU defensive back who intercepts the pass with no interference being called, resulting in a 14 point swing in the middle of the 3rd quarter.

All the difference in the world between being "Average" and "Great" is being on the right end of these types of plays, whenever they happen. Any breaks we got last year were long overdue.

Look at each of those time periods you mentioned and tell me what they have in common. Does 2006 have anything in common with them? The answer, for the most part, is no.

Thats why this year is so important. Especially if our fans think that 07 is our NC year.
We have to do well this year if we want to start well in Preseason polls.
Dont get me wrong I think this year is our year.
