Re: Reuben Foster ReCommits to Alabama

After watching the 30 for 30 on Bo Jackson, I've often wondered if he'd have come to Bama if we had just told him he could have played his freshman year. We were stacked then, but Bo ended up going to the one school that we didn't need him to go to.

Re: Reuben Foster Says He Will Only Visit 3 Schools

Question - Would helping him pay for his tattoo removal count as a "Benefit"?

Arguably the top talent there is this year. Physically suited to our style as well. If he gets on campus, I'll put him as this year's biggest get, regardless of whoever else we pull over the next couple days.

As an aside, I've never seen a recruit have this kind of effect on our fanbase. Every little rumor about this guy got a mood swing from our fans.

Perhaps, and every Bama fan that is being honest wishes we had signed Bo. OTOH, the implosion at AU last year had a LOT to do with every player being promised immediate playing time, and when things went bad, you had a lot jilted players blowing up twitter voicing their displeasure. Living over amongst them, I hear a lot of conversations discussing things that a lot of these players are told and promised. I know one particular player that has told everybody that will listen that Tommy Thigpen promised him and his mom that he'd start as a freshman, and now in his third year in the program, he feels like he has been betrayed. That's what happens when you guarantee players something without them feeling they have to prove and earn the position. In every interview you hear with Bama's players, they say CNS told them they would have the chance to compete for playing time. He has proven that time after time when freshman have beat out upperclassmen to play, but we've also seen 5 stars sit on the bench if they didn't cut it. I'd rather risk losing the occasional great player by being truthful with the incoming players instead promising every one of them a starting spot and causing dissention when it doesn't happen.

This tweet from Kipp Adams is pretty interesting:

Kipp Adams ‏@KippLAdams
When @FalconsRayven & I interviewed Reuben Foster 2 years ago he said he was scared to go to #Bama. He committed to the #Tide a month later.

I asked him what scared Foster...

Kipp Adams ‏@KippLAdams
How far Nick Saban would push him in practice. RT ‏@JeffAtlanta
If this lives up what he said tonight about understanding "tough love" and buys into what CNS is telling him, he will be very, VERY special.

He has talent, my only concern is his head. Hopefully, Saban can get it screwed on right.

Exactly, and while this young man has incredible physical ability I don't think his football skills from a mental or mechanical stand point are anywhere close to what CJ Mosely's or even Trey Depriests were when they came to Bama. It's going to take him awhile to pick up Saban's system and work into the rotation. I certainly think it's very nice to get this guy but I don't think he's the best in our class by any means. From what I've seen of him he's going to need development. Physically ready? Absolutely. Mechanically and mentally? Not so sure.
And one more thing........he hasn't signed yet lol. I'll believe this when we get the fax on Wednesday.

Maybe so but Coach Bryant wasn't too keen on making promises like that. The only player that I know for an absolute fact Coach Bryant ever made such a promise to was Linnie Patrick from my home town of Jasper. Bo actually turned out to be much better overall but Linnie
was one of the most highly recruited athletes in history. I remember when the pre-criminal O.J. Simpson came to Jasper to try and sway him to USC. We couldn't believe it. Never seen a running back like Linnie in high school. If he could have stayed out of the dog house at Bama there's no telling what he could have accomplished. sip

This guy though is a starter.

And if he buys in to his own comments last night about him coming to Bama had as much to do with off-the-field as on-the- field (character and love), then he will indeed rise to be one of, if not the best of, this signing class.
IMO, he was very nervous last night...I'm not sure he's as big of a limelight hog as I previously thought. The fact he bought in to Trooper's baloney is unsettling, but if he means what he said last night, Bama's defense just got markedly better.

Re: Reuben Foster ReCommits to Alabama

I kinda always felt like Reuban would realize that the best possible place for him would be Alabama. I want to know what the big shocker was that was supposed to be, erm, shocking? And that Sports journalist who said AU in between the filming and airing of the commitment, you lose all creditabilty, pack it up bro.

My step brother (he and his wife were friends of Jim Goosetree) told me back then that the only reason Coach Bryant got him to Bama was to keep him away from the Barn. He told me it was pretty much known at the time LP would hardly ever see the field at Bama (I do know Coach was no fan of the doo rag, and I think LP was the first to wear one). Just repeating what I was told at the time.

Re: Reuben Foster ReCommits to Alabama

I have seen it asked a couple of times over the past few pages, but no one has addressed is academic eligibility.

What's the latest with his issues there? Are we good there?

..well Coach Bryant also always seemed to put Linnie in the game when the game was on the line lol. When he broke Staggs record against Auburn we were behind late in the fourth quarter and on our game winning drive Linnie carried the ball on every single running play. I knew Linnie pretty well and he was never going to Auburn. Believe it or not if he hadn't signed with Bama his second choice was probably Nebraska who was on a roll at the time and always had a feature tailback. He liked that. But his heart was always with Bama.
It wasn't like he had a sorry career either. He led the team in rushing as a true freshman if you'll remember. That was almost unheard of at the time.
