He stayed in coach Bryant's Dog House most of the time, but this run against Auburn sealed 315 for Coach Bryant.

Linnie played at Walker County High in Jasper. We played them every year. He was a phenomenal running back. The guy just couldn’t “get out of his own way” when it came to off the field stuff.

Rest in Peace Linnie. You’re leaving us far too young.

We played Walker County and Linnie in 1978. Our MLB was Thomas Hubbard (younger brother of former Bama player Colonozo Hubbard). Walker beat us 42-21 and Patrick rushed for 200+ yards. Thomas Hubbard had some ungodly number of tackles. He literally spent the entire night chasing down Linnie Patrick.

"In 1980 ... I was working on a story for the Daily Mountain Eagle about Walker standout Linnie Patrick and needed a quote from Bryant ... I mustered all the courage I had. “Coach, how’s Linnie Patrick doing?”​

Back in the day when the players were wearing "do-rags" Linnie supposedly ask Coach Bryant if they could wear them.

Coach said: "Sure, Linnie. You can wear a do-rag if you want. Or you can wear your helmet. But you can't wear both."

He was one of the many "what could haven been" players who donned the Crimson jersey. He was so talented, but as we all know you cannot be a success on talent alone.

Having grown up there, I'm struggling to remember another player of this caliber. And, as so many have stated, if he could've only realized his true potential, what might have been?

By the way, that run against Auburn was on the pregame video for many, many years. It always caused a roar among the fans when they saw that play!
