Hi everyone. My father in law and I do a Rivalry Tour (he is Arizona St I'm Arizona) this year we have decided to come to the Iron Bowl and cannot be more excited. LSU/Alabama 2 years ago did not disappoint and I'm sure Tuscaloosa won't let us down. We always buy the home team hat and root for the W! We are staying in Birmingham arriving Friday night. Can we Uber to Tuscaloosa? Party bus? Motorcade?. Any pregame spots, sights, restaurants we should hit for the experience? Flights are booked. Any help is appreciated.

We can talk about details later, but for the Auburn game, unless you're staying with friends, you need to book your room now, and I'm not kidding.

Here's an excerpt from a gameday travel guide I've cobbled together.

Tuscaloosa
Keep in mind, there are 7 game weekends a year, and the hotel operators look to these to make their other 45 weeks a year profitable.
• Many hotels require reservations for all seven weekends, at a two- or three-night minimum for each.
• If you can find a room, you will pay full rack rate. There will be no bargains.
• If you are coming in for one game only, and have to be near campus, start calling in the spring and go for a cancellation.
• All rooms will be expensive. The main tradeoff is availability vs. distance from campus.
• I cannot emphasize enough: Make your reservations well ahead of time – like April / May time frame. For big games (think LSU and Auburn), even that might be late.

Specific options:
• Hotel Capstone – Literally right on campus, between Coleman Coliseum and Bryant-Denny Stadium. Has one of the full-season arrangements I mentioned above. There is a 100% chance it will be 100% packed on game weekends.

Best bet if you don’t already have a reservation is to get a cancellation. Still, it’s worth a long shot try for the incredible convenience of the location.

• Embassy Suites – Downtown Tuscaloosa, in the middle of a lot of downtown restaurants and bars. Excellent in-house restaurant called Side By Side. Owned by chef Chris Hastings. If you don’t know Hastings, Google him. He’s the real deal. About 12-14 block relatively flat walk to the stadium, or there are shuttles a few blocks away at the Downtown Parking Deck (see parking topic below).

• Hotel Indigo – On the edge of downtown, easy walking distance to the Amphitheater, but about a two-block uphill walk to the downtown nightlife. Could walk to the stadium if you don’t have mobility issues, but it will be a longer, somewhat hillier walk.

• Holiday Inn Express – Not walking distance, but is across a busy street from University Mall, where there is a gameday shuttle. I think the shuttle is $10, but you’d need to check.

• Other Hotels – There are dozens of other hotels that are not within walking distance to the campus, and don’t provide a shuttle. Chances of getting a room will be better. Just understand that (1) you’ll have to find gameday parking on your own, and (2) there are no bargains on hotel rooms on game weekends.

• Air BnB and VRBO – There are options for Tuscaloosa on both sites. Just be real clear on where you’ll be.

Birmingham
All things considered, this is a good option for a one-off game weekend. There are several hotels at or near the I-459 / US 280 interchange. Easy hop onto I-459, then to I-59/20 to Tuscaloosa.

- Ttown will be very expensive so I would stay in Hoover, Inverness, or some other good Bham hotel it’s about 45-hr away with no traffic but like 2-3 hrs on normal game day traffic but the iron bowl is going to be worse if Auburn is having a great year. So plan accordingly.

- Walk of champions is 2 or 3 hours before kick

- Bryant museum is a must see

- quad can be fun

- be sure to be in the stadium 1hr before kick for the video and see fans get into it.

- I would say it would be cheaper to rent a car for a day and park at Central High School personally.

Thank you 4Q. We've been checking hotels since December and the prices are insane! Indigo and Embassy are both 850/night! That being said, we are thinking about staying in Birmingham and we can hire a driver to get to Tuscaloosa.

Oh for restaurants I think Rama Jammas and the stuff on the quad are the best unless you find your way through the strip. Otherwise you are at the mercy of the chain restaurants

$850/nite!...dude, I have a popup camper i'm sure we can find somewhere within walking distance of Bryant Denny to park it! I'll only hit ya up for $2fitty/nite...no tax!

  Deal!! That's why I'm thinking BHam and pay a driver. I can pay a lot for transportation and end up WAY ahead.

Glad to have you in T-Town. I was just in Scottsdale 10 days ago playing desert golf. Was not expecting 99 degrees in late April but it was fantastic. Enjoy yourself.

I do not have any good input on this myself, but I wanted to say this yearly deal you and your father do sounds like a fantastic, fun idea. I really hope you enjoy your trip and time with your dad.

Looks incredible! Would you go pre-game or post-game? Does Iron Bowl normally kick off early evening?
Be prepared - awesome food but the seating is all outside at picnic tables. We took our food back to our hotel to eat it in more comfort, but that would not really be possible if you are staying an hour outside of town. Awesome BBQ if you are staying near or the weather is perfect. Maybe try somewhere else if that isn't the case.

Arrive early and do the Bear Bryant museum, Check out the prints at Denny Chimes & pick out some interesting tailgaters to share your story with (e.g. what you and your dad are doing & you'll probably get some food/beer and new friends). Strolling the campus-- Woods Hall survived the civil war and was used as a prison, Gorgas House is historic, Smith Hall is the Natural History museum and the interior is worth a look. Otherwise, many buildings around the quad are just nice to look at period......

Thanks. That’s great! We went to LSU/Bama in BR 2 years ago and had a great time. Fans on both sides were VERY welcoming and we love seeing the details of all the campuses. Thanks again.

With the expectations of both teams it is highly likely the game will be a 2:30 CST kick-off on CBS.
So if we assume (for now) a 2:30p start, what time would you suggest getting to T-Town? More importantly, what kind of travel time should we expect from Birmingham?
