It is absurd to think there were no vulgarities at Bama games during Bryant's time. As long as there's been football theres been cussing, that means Bama too.

I never said that. When is class class and when is it not? The definition of class hasnt changed over time, has it? Of course there has been cussing. Since that is so should we just say it is ok if kids are around to act like that? I think that is the point the original poster and TideBeliever were making. It has nothing to do with fun either. My gosh every hair I have is on end when I go see Alabama play. I have the time of my life every time and it never gets old.

Cheers

Well, I'm a UT fan, and I have no problem with the alternate words to Rocky Top...I realize that opposing fans are gonna do chants against us...I'm not far removed from college, so I know how all the cheers go...UT does the same to RJYH...In the case of a UT win, instead of "Give em Hell Alabama," the students say "Go to Hell Alabama" It's all in good fun...

When UGA does their "Go Georgia Bulldogs" chant, opposing teams do the "Go Back To Georgia" Chant...Again, all in good fun

I don't really have an opinion one way or the other as far as this post goes, kids will be kids and students will act the fool (Lord knows, I've known enough people who partied themselves right out of Bama) and that's their right...but...

the quote above is the most ridiculous bunch of hooey I've ever heard. That's all I've got to say about that.

Judging from most student sections in America, there is a "sticks and stones" mentality. You can expect words of all sorts, a few gestures, maybe some mooning, etc. The line is usually drawn when it comes to physical altercations, more extreme indecent exposure, etc. Is it appropriate for kids? No. Is it appropriate to do in front of Grandma? No. Is it appropriate at all? Perhaps not.

To fundamentally change the behavior in the student section, you would have to somehow limit the massive amount of booze consumed by people (students) prior to the game who have yet to reach full maturity. I don't see that happening. Sitting your kids in the student section would be akin to taking them to a fraternity party or a near-campus bar. I wouldn't recommend it.

If you can ask yourself, "would Bear have approved of that?"...and you can tell yourself, "yes", then go ahead. But if you think that the man in the Houndstooth Hat would have said "no", then.............

I wouldn't do it!!

What in the heck does Coach Bryant have to do with fans in the stands? Students for that matter? Blame their parents or piers for their behavior.

No wonder Bama fans get made fun of. What would Bear say...

The interesting thing...

was that Coach Bryant had quite a lot to do with behavior in the stands. Just before he returned, Bama suffered its worst years ever in football (if you don't believe me, go back and look up the records). We came to the stadium, quite frankly, to drink and raise hell. Not much was happening on the field to distract from that, after all. He immediately banned alcohol in the stands. Sure, it never went away, never can, but it decreased to 5% of what it had been. He also let it be known how he wanted his players to be perceived - and also the fans. Now, did students know and use the "F" word? Sure. Did they use it in front of kids and grannies? Not on your life. The general comportment of society in general has slipped to a level that would have been unimaginable in the 50s. A large portion of the TV shows today wouldn't have been allowed in movie theaters back then. If you weren't alive then, you don't really know. Do you?

Yeah and in a lot of ways they were crap. It's all in perception. Not to hijack this thread, but it's one of my pet peeves when people look back across time and yearn for the good ole days, neglecting all that was bad. Hmmm rampant unreported domestic violence, segregation, poor health care, etc. I have no doubt that they had there redeeming qualities, but they weren't a golden age of enlightenment were every kid sold lemonade on the weekends and all church choirs sang on key. I live now. This is my time and I don't want it judged by any propped up artificially flavored, sugar coated perception of a time long past. I've heard my grandfather's recollections of the fifties. His life wasn't all that freakin' rosy. I will take my generations irreverent narcissism over the 50s grey suited banality anyday of the week.

Like I said. Don't want to hijack the thread, and I generally like most of what you have to say Tide-HSV, but this kind of statement just strikes a nerve with me.

Thank you. As I stated earlier in the thread, sensible opposing fans know it's all in good fun. I say it's good for the rivalry. How can you have a good rivalry if all you have to chant at the other team is "Gee golly darn I sure hope you lose, Tennessee!"? I'm a student, and I don't drink before the games, as much as some of you might not believe that. I still like to raise a little hell and chant and have fun along with everyone else. I'm just that into Bama football.

I've never understood the attraction to singing the alternate lyrics. Unless everyone in in sync, people listening on TV think that we are singing UT's favorite song and/or that UT has so many people in our stadium that they are dominating the atmosphere.

The alternate lyrics are offensive and are low class. Anybody with any standards would agree that "that word" is obscene.

Why are we so fired up to be low class?

If you really, REALLY think about it, "that word' is simply a WORD. That's all. It's no different than many other socially acceptable versions of the same word, except people have been told over and over that it's a BAD word. People need to lighten up, and stop getting offended over freedom of speech.

I'm afraid you re-opened the can of worms.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

...and it's thd "do-gooders" in early America that gave us that word in the first place by labling those who were placed in the stockades for adultery with those initials to denote their crime of unlawful carnel knowledge.

Words are totally neutral. It is the hearer who places negative, dirty, crude, etc. labels on those words.

Okay so caoch Bryant made sure every student at a game behaved! Okay...

Banning alchohol in the stand, brilliant, how about the majority of it that is consumed prior to and after the games? Guess if he were alive today he would have shut down all the alchohol brewers from producing to stop it state wide!

So in the 50's no one used obsenities huh?

and there is this...
If you weren't alive then, you don't really know. Do you?
I have a big problem with this statement, but I dont want to get banned for insulting an elder so I'll stop right now.

What you apparently don't understand is that Coach Bryant demanded class from his team, his staff and his fans...... and Coach Bryant wouldn't have ever let anything to his knowledge deteriorate from the Alabama name....

So.....I stand behind my first quote.....if the Coach wouldn't have approved of it, I wouldn't do it.

Nuff Said!
