Running tips, less than 60 days for my first marathon

Hey folks.

Any running tips, less than 60 days until my first marathon in Atlantic City. I’ve completed 3 half marathons and my longest run has been 16 miles three times. My last 16 mile run was the middle of last month while on vacation in DTLA to Santa Monica Pier. Pretty nice run. IMG_8407.jpeg
 
I’m going to attempt a 20 mile run early in the morning, I have my route mapped out and left two small bottles of water at the 10 mile mark for me to finish on the remainder of my run. My wife and 14 year old son thinks that I’m nuts.

Well I made it back, finished 21 miles this morning. I was do glad the two small bottles of water were where I left them yesterday at the 10 mile mark because I ended up drinking them along with the two 8oz water and 8oz Gatoraid which I had in my front pockets and side pouch on my under my shorts. I’m pretty sore no, nice blister on the side of my heel and my shoulders are sore other than that, I’m fine.

congrats on finishing the long run.

when you hit the wall (and you will hit the wall) remember r.f.m. relentless forward motion. you will eventually end up past the wall

how did your marathon go?
Well not as I would have liked it to go. I hit the wall after mile 8. I started cramping in my upper thighs, both hips, back, and arms and shoulders. At this point my pace was in the 14:30 pace range, but the start of mile 9 came with head winds along the boardwalk which coupled with my fatigue pretty much finished me. I decided to cut it short and finish for the half marathon instead as they ran both the same time. I walked the remaining miles and struggled to get to the finish line, it was probably the longest 4 mile walk that I had ever taken. Thank god for benches along the boardwalk as I made use of them for rest breaks. I would say not getting enough sleep might have contributed too, but I just could fall asleep in the hotel room. I’m guessing I had about 6 hours sleep before getting up to eat at 5am.

Mile 1 was 11:47 and 2 was 13:33. , but 3 to 8 was between 14:36 and 15:09 and walking 9-13was 18:52 to 23:39, I was a half mile shy of the 13.1. I made the best of it and will give it another try next year.

sounds like a tough day. i’ve had a few of those. way to get the half anyway. you’ll get it next year
