Game Thread: Saturday Games 9/7

I think the touchback was called on the punt because the Cal player went into the endzone and did not get both feet back into play before he grabbed the ball. I don't know for sure if that is the rule but it is what happened. He had one foot in the field but the other was still in the air coming back into the field of play.
That’s not the rule in college. The ball has to cross the plane, doesn’t matter where the player is.

I honestly think the refs got confused on the play and went by the NFL rule.
I also have questions about Auburn’s first touchdown. The receiver was forced out of bounds but the official said he “established“ back inbounds before making the catch. My understanding to make re-establishing happen, both feet must be clearly back inbounds before touching the ball. To me, it looked like the Auburn player was touching the ball as his second foot was coming down. Cal‘s coach, Justin Wilcox was like “you’re kidding, right?”.

Here is my take but I'm having a difficult time finding the scenario described in any of the rules I've searched.

In the NFL, if the ball crosses the plane of the goal line but hasn't touched down in the end zone and a kicking team player leaps from the field of play and tips it back, it doesn't matter, it is still a touchback. The Bama punt did not cross the plane of the goal line.

In NCAA, if the player leaps from the field of play and tips the ball back after it has crossed the plane, the ball goes back into the field of play as a live ball. In the USF game, the player jumped from the end zone and did not get re-established in the field of play; I think he is considered part of the ground in the end zone until he re-establishes. I still believe the refs got it correct.
I was talking about the Cal-Barn game. Cal punted near the goal-line and it didn’t look like the ball crossed the plane. They didn’t even review it.
