Say something good about Wisconsin!

Lurking Badger here.

There's not much to crow about. I think everyone even in Buckyville believes Bama will kick Badger tail. The Fickell era just has not inspired passion - we all knew our old identity needed a refresh, but nobody seems to know what the new identity actually is.

FYI, neither "Wisky" nor "Sconnie" are really things among actual Badger fans - they're not insulting to us at all, it's just what other fans call us. We do refer to ourselves as Bucky though.

What I haven't seen mentioned in this thread is that Frank Lloyd Wright was a longtime resident of Madison, and there are several of his buildings around. The Convention Center on Lake Monona was built 70+ years after his death, but it was his design

Great to see you, thanks for posting! I was just joking. We usually don't talk a lot of crap around here but really enjoy visiting fans. Pull us a chair and stay a while. We love to talk football. How do you guys feel about your new coach?

That's outstanding.

Welcome to TF.com!

We have not played Wisconsin very much but I have always admired their play style from a distance. Hard nose defense and run the football. I know the new staff is changing that but still one of my favorite teams to watch grind out wins historically.

The USS Wisconsin (sister ship of the USS Iowa, Missouri, and New Jersey) is in Norfolk.
In 1956, she collided with the destroyer USS Eaton, badly damaging Wisconsin's bow.

One of the unfinished sister ships ( which was to have been USS Kentucky) was in Portsmouth, Virginia, so the Navy sliced the damaged bow off the Wisconsin and the good bow off the Kentucky, and welded the Kentucky's bow onto Wisconsin, and the ship got the nickname "Whisky" (Wisconsin + Kentucky

I can only speak for myself. I think he was a hot name. For a long time, we've had mostly Wisconsin guys at the head coach as well as coordinators. That worked for us, but the dynamics with the transfer portal and NIL make the traditional way UW built the program no longer sustainable. We used to get a fair number of guys who walked on and then became NFL players when they left. We were a developmental program. By necessity, not anymore. The recruiting has gotten better as far as rankings go, but we haven't seen that translate to success yet. Particularly defensively, we used to routinely be a top 5 program, and they just look not up to the standard of what we had for a long time.

We have a tough schedule (I think 4 top 10-ish teams) and 7 wins should be viewed as wildly successful. I say should because it won't be.

I thought you were referring to the SS Badger at first, which is a ferry boat crossing Lake Michigan from Manitowoc (WI) to Ludington (MI). Takes 4 hours - not a tremendous time-saver, but it's fun to do once.ferry

I do enjoy a ferry trip. Park your car and let someone else drive for a while.

USS Wisconsin is an impressive ship if you are ever in Norfolk, Virginia.

I think you guys will always have a strong program but my only question is if Fickell will stay if the Ohio State job opens up and it very well might. We have been lucky the past couple of decades but there was a time when we went through a lot of coaching changes and man, that is brutal.

It would important to take the ferry in prime summer weather. I had some associates up for a project and over the weekend we drove over to Sheboygan and walked out onto the breakwater. It was of course 50 degrees on the lake on what was a quite hot Wisconsin day. Really love the area from Kohler up and down the lake shore. Wisconsin was home for us. Both our sons were born in Fond du Lac. It has been years since we moved back south and I often think how beautiful it is in the summer and fall.

Not worried about that. That would mean that Fickell had enough success at Wisconsin to even be considered at tO$U. They're a bit like you guys in that they have the resources to go get the absolute best coach who's available. Plus, he didn't have a great interim stint while sweatervest (or was it Urban, I forget) got in trouble - they'll believe they can do better.

That doesn't mean some other school wouldn't poach him, though. Part of the reason we had hired Paul Chryst was we had two straight coaches leave for other jobs (Bielema to Arky and Andersen to OrSt) - Chryst grew up in the neighborhood around Camp Randall, and was a lower flight risk. We do that with our basketball coaches, too (Dick Bennett to Bo Ryan to Greg Gard - all "Wisconsin guys" who've either grown up in WI or coached there most of their lives). WIsconsin is well above average for resources, but not in the same league of Bama (or the higher tier B10 programs). We have a ceiling, and that's not likely to change in the current environment.

Well, I always respected the Wisconsin identity and, although he may be a good coach, not sure you guys have one under this new regime. UAB had a coach, Bill Clark, he was a run the ball guy and play D. Had great success and now a new coach has taken over and set the program back a few years. Maybe you guys will turn the curve and show out tomorrow but quite a risky move even though Fickell is a known commodity.

I have to say, I liked Wisconsin's brand of football under previous coaches (Alvarez and Bielema). Play solid D, run the ball well. Not flashy, but solid.

My favorite game was being able to have zero pass attempts in the second half against Michigan during their RichRod days. I mean, flashy is fun, but being able to pound a team into submission takes their manhood away.

Those days are over.

Absolutely.
In 2009 (Saban's first national championship at Alabama), Bama was playing a close game against South Carolina. Bama got the ball back with 7:55 left to play up 13-6. Bama ran Mark Ingram in the wildcat almost every play, took 3 minutes off the clock, and Ingram scored a TD. South Carolina simply could not stop Ingram. Very satisfying drive.

Another example was 2015. Bama vs LSU. Bama gets the ball up 30-16 with 9:18 to play. LSU never gets the ball back. Game ended with Bama taking a knee at the 17 yard line, a nine minute drive. Alabama offense just took away LSU's manhood one play at a time.
