Say Something Nice About Bill Curry Thread :)

All I know about Bill Curry is that he left Bama in good shape for Stallings, he couldn't beat Auburn, he wasn't too fond of the old school players that wanted to watch the Tide practice (Billy Neighbors and etc.), he and his asst.'s like to parade around in their Ga. Tech apparell, he was the most unfriendly person I've ever met that I didn't thump, and best of all, he resides in Jawja. Please disregard this, I forgot I was supposed to say something nice.

Even when Curry was an analyst I only heard positive things about Alabama and the program from him and to me that speaks loads about his character and class and decency. Many of us would do well to follow his example. And if the brick incident did occur he gets an A++. I don't do a great job myself but I am making an effort and I have been much worse off.

There was a lot more to the Curry story than the usual stuff we read, but really he and Bama were just not a good fit, and that little Auburn thing. It wasn't his fault nor the teams, but he couldn't even wear a sweater we liked. I believe the pressure of being an outsider at the peak of our prestige' made Bill a little paranoid and he reacted with defiance. If he had thicker skin(which was one of the problems) and had another couple of good seasons, I believe he would have won the Old Boys Club over to the point that the scales would have been heavily tilted in his favor.

He sure wasn't about to get fired in 89, and he had some great talent coming in. IMO, 90-92 would have been 10 win seasons for him.

Something else good to say.................While he was here, Bama sweaters were always on sale.

Had he stayed, I like to think that he would have eventually gotten a win over the barn. He better have anyway! Could you imagine the uproar if he had still been the coach in 1991 and 1992 and still could not beat auburn teams who went 5-6 in those years?

I will never say anything negative about Bill Curry, and here is why:

When I attended UA, I was a member of Zeta Beta Tau Fraternity (ZBT.) For those that don't know, ZBT is a Jewish fraternity.

One Fall, the University scheduled Homecoming on one of the Jewish High Holidays (I don't really remember the details, either Rosh Hashannah or Yom Kippur.) ZBT sent the athletic department a letter asking them not to do that again, as it prevented ZBT (and the Jewish sorority, SDT) from participating in Homecoming activities.

We never expected to get a response, but after the season, we got a personal response from Coach Curry, apologizing for the scheduling and offering to come to the fraternity house to have dinner with the members, as a way of making it up to us.

So the head coach at the University of Alabama came to our fraternity house, ate dinner, and stayed around for an hour or so afterward to answer questions and meet everyone.

I thought it was a very classy move, and it was not done for the benefit of the media (none was present) or anyone else. He just thought it was the right thing to do after we were prevented from participating in Homecoming.

This is the reason I will always have respect for Bill Curry as a person.

I've read on this board multiple times from posters who seem to have the lowdown...the brick-throwing tale was made up to give Curry an excuse to jump ship.

He looked more like a sweater model than a coach to me, my sister's biggest knock was how he seemed to always be preoccupied with holding his stomach in.

Since he's been on TV, I've heard plenty of stuff coming from him about his time at Bama, not all of it flattering towards Bama, but all of it flattering towards himself.

Very nice story

Didn't someone once explain how it would be physically impossible to throw a brick through a plate glass window on the second story from the ground? You know those windows are reinforced to be extremely strong, especially from outside agents. I've had several very large birds slam into my office window flying pretty fast. The bird dies but the window has never cracked.

I to am struggling to recall Curry's complimentary statements about Alabama. I remember more snide remarks about his time here.

By way of a couple of corrections:

Drafted by the Packers, played in Super Bowl I with them.
Traded to Baltimore, played in Super Bowls III and V

The brick incident, real or alledged, occurred after the Ole Miss game, in which our QBs failed to complete a single pass. The standing joke at the time was "at least we know it wasn't one of our QBs that threw the brick".

As for coaching, his record improved each year of the three years he was at Bama and he never lost to Tennessee or Penn St. Unfortunately, he also blew some games against weaker opponents and could never beat Auburn. Worst of all, he never learned when to just shut up and say nothing.

Also in his favor, I never heard or read of him making anything but complementary remarks where Alabama players were concerned.

Just an opinion, but probably Joab Thomas and Lewis Grizzard damned him from the onset of his career at Bama. Thomas by electing to introduce him at the same time as Steve Sloan whom he had also hired, thereby linking them almost indelibly in the public mind, and Grizzard at the same period of time by referring to Sloan and Curry as the "Righteous Brothers". As Sloan's dropping popularity in the wake of some his decisions and actions as AD seemed to carry over to Curry as well.
