This thing sounds to me suspiciously like, "Look, nobody gives a damn about Minnesota vs Indiana, so let's get all the big dogs under the same roof and have the Olympics every Saturday."

Be honest - would you rather see Michigan vs Purdue or Michigan vs Clemson?

However, you'd think this might also require the jettisoning of Vandy and the Mississippis to maintain credibility, too.
And awbern...

They'll be the only conference team with a losing record against Vanderbilt.
But not the only member with a non-winning record.

1) The ACC already has the NY market with Syracuse.

2) West Virginia was a part of the old Big East and went to the Big XII for money. The Big XII took them to have even teams. WVU offered 0 to the Big XII. It’s a huge reason that out of the the teams with Virginia in their name… UVA is the only money maker.

3) You are forgetting how lucrative the KC market actually is.

4) You are still not stating what teams are realistically out there for the B1G that are better than Kansas. The reason the B1G would take Kansas is because they are the best program out there not named Notre Dame without a full time membership in a stable conference. Plus their AAU status allows the B1G to keep with their membership qualifications.

5) Aside from Kansas.., if OU and Texas go to the SEC and Notre Dame says “pass” then the best available schools are UCF, Memphis, and Iowa St. It’s not exactly a good selection.
I am not talking about the Syracuse TV market. It is in no way comparable with the New York City TV market, of which Rutgers plays in. (yes I know Rutgers is in New Jersey -- but still in the NY City TV market) All bets are off. No one knows what will happen.

March Madness probably becomes something that the power conference decides on. I don’t see a 64 team tournament.
I don’t know about that. As a casual fan, I don’t watch a lot of CBB, but I do watch the tourney, and I love the early round games. Wall to wall basketball , with upsets and near upsets. PLUS, it is easier to compete in basketball than football, and mid major teams have advanced deep into tourneys

talking purely football, it will be a huge wake up for a BIG12 team coming into the SEC. it’s easy to beat an SEC team in a one game scenario, but the grind of the regular season takes a toll in shear talent alone. Talented teams also takes a mental toll having to get up week in and week out!

Using 247 2020 composite total team talent, the SEC has 7 of the top ten and 12 of the top thirty teams. Contrast that with 2 of the top 20 (Texas/OU) in the top 20 and 3 (TCU #28) in the top 30. There will definitely be an adjustment.

Using 247, Texas is the third most talented and OU is the 6th most talented team in the SEC if they entered at the end of 2020. There is no 2021 evaluation yet, I guess they are waiting for camp to start to make their evaluations.

There is far and away a bigger following of Cuse fans than Knights fans. The ACC are in the NYC market with Cuse. But even then ask yourself “do New Yorkers really care about major college athletics”.

But without the NCAA it’s less likely to continue in its current format. Remember who owns the TV rights to March madness.

According to that Vandy has more conference championships than Auburn , HaHa! 13 for Vandy to 12 for the barn!

I suspect that it will continue pretty much as is for the foreseeable future.
Maybe but everything comes down to TV rights. CBS owns the TV rights through the NCAA. If the SEC absorbs the major programs then the NCAA dies. If that happens there is no contract for March Madness and I doubt the SEC is going back to CBS before even starting. A big selling point for CBS is that it’s on every television package. ESPN isn’t.

I really wouldn’t be surprised if it’s a 32 team playoff.

But it’s going to be an unknown future for college athletics regardless.

The NCAA does not die because of what the SEC is doing immediately. The NCAA is going to fight for its survival.

If the SEC gets Oklahoma, Texas, Clemson, FSU, Ohio St, and Michigan then it is dead. Only Notre Dame and USC really remain for national brands. There is no way it could survive on 1 major conference and a coalition of mid level teams with two giants sprinkled in.

You can have a more stimulating conversation with a crash test dummy than you can a Longhorn fan.
Adapted from Texags, but pretty spot on

Longhorns in 2011 - the SEC is a bunch of hicks that are beneath us
Longhorns in 2021 - This has been the master plan all along
Longhorns in 2021, if SEC does not add Texas - we just used the SEC to get a better deal in a more academically reputable conference
