SEC Admits Refs Goofed in Florida/Tennessee Game

"They almost need therapy"

What a line of crap that is. I'd be willing to bet that Bobby Moreau's bank account has already received therapy. Orange therapy.

The really sad thing is that it never seems to end. Does anyone really think that Ucheat will no longer receive favored treatment because of this? I don't.
 
Fulmer must have a pact with the devil, because they are the most lucky team in football. Had the official called offsetting personal fouls, as he should have, the down would have been replayed and the Gators would have had another shot at the first down and at a minimum could have run down the clock and punted from a position that would have made it extremely difficult for UT to get in position to kick the FG.
 
They goofed? I'm sure the Florida players, coaches, and fans are taking solace in the fact that the refs 'goofed' and cost them the game.

If that's the best the SEC has to offer, I fear for the league as a whole. SEC referees routinely made, at best, highly questionable calls that directly affected the outcome of three seperate games.

If I were a non-SEC school playing an SEC school I would demand to use my own conference's referees or another conference's referees. I'd even take high school referees.
 
You know, there are times when a ref may just make an honest goof, but what happened Saturday night in the waning moments of a tight game was criminal. That guy should be banned from ever calling a game, and I can't help but to be suspicious of who was behind that guy making the call.

How in the name of God can you look at both players throwing punches and only call one? How? Explain that one to me.

Also, why didn't the clock start as soon as the ball was set fater the penalty?

I agree, ref's make mistakes, but that was not your typical honest mistake. That was a ref blatantly watching an entire sequence of events and selectively enforcing a punishment on only one player after witnessing both players commit an infraction. He saw the whole freakin' thing. He can't claim he didn't see the first punch - he did. I mean, it couldn't have been more obvious... his attention was focused on the both of them, and he only threw the flag after the Florida player retaliated.

And the clock not starting? Only adds to the suspicion factor. Brutal, brutal call. I seriously hope people across the country and in the media finally take notice.
 
I wish the national media would take notice of this. See, all of this mess with UTee has been building, snow-balling, and heading downhill. They routinely get away with poop like this, and I have to be frank here, it smells fishy.

I know the NCAA and the SEC aren't going to dig deeper, because they are both involved. What has Fulmer done to deserve such pristine treatment by the only regulating authorities the game has? Tell me college football is not broken, because I still think of it as a purist's game. I have my doubts that it has stayed true to itself. Saturday night's events were too suspicious to simply be overlooked, and I hope Ron Zook and the university of Florida administration do something about it.
 
Maybe we can call it a "judgement malfunction", but knowing SEC officials that is just "par for the course". They are the only officials that call holding on the back side of the play and ignore blatant holding on the point of attack. I have seen the Ark and other O-lines have more takedowns than a the Greco-Roman wrestling match. These guys are "good ole-boys" who are either on the take from the SEC or Vegas either one, I'm not sure.

That Doyle Jackson Bama had is a joke. He needs to retire or get a one way bus ticket to Juneau and take the scenic route to get there. Bobby Gaston then needs to go look for him. :p
 
this reminds me of that phantom TD that ND got last year. The ref is running 2 feet from the ND player that is running down the sideline, the kids entire foot goes out of bounds he dives for the cone and comes up short the ball bounces over it and the ref signals TD. I supposed he just thought that ND getting a TD was good for college football.

I would take the bet. The timing goof is on the guy wearing the white hat. He is the king on the field and winds the clock etc. Very seldom does the crew question a clock situation because they never deal with the clock. The lone exception is delay of game. Second, the action away from the ball is often missed...more often then crew wants to admit because the first blow is missed. The reason is for a HL or FJ you are watching the start of play, ineligible down field, and the play develop which means finding the football all while reading pass or run etc. It is a shame when it happens...but it happens.

ND did the same thing against BAMA in the late 80's i believe. i almost ended my young life that day. :mad: :mad: :mad:
 
Whammer - have you seen the play in question? Have you seen the clip of the ref watching those two players specifically the whole time the penatlies occurred? This wasn't a case of the ref 'missing' the first blow. He saw them both.

I'm not disagreeing with anyone; but be realistic. SEC officials have a long, long history of bungled calls or no-calls on their side. They may have blatantly cheated Florida out of that game for all we know. However, you could never prove it because they will defend themselves by saying to go back and look at all of the other bungled calls they've had for all SEC schools. The list is long and distinguished.

The only thing people can take notice of is how horrible the officiating is in the SEC. Not of any bias towards one school. They have proven themselves to be equal-opportunity call-blowers. Hence, you could never prove it if they ever did deliberately make a call or no-call in favor of one team.

It's pitiful; but it is what it is . . .

By observing the replay the Ref that threw the flag watched closely as first, the Tenn player delivered the first blow and was in the same position, as the fla player retaliated. To be it was if he was waiting for the retaliation to throw the flag. Thats how I reviewed it going down and I 've seen some questionable calls but this one pretty much stinks of $$$$$$$, or allegence to another team. No sour grapes for me, I have no passion for neither team but I hate to see such events decide a game.

Understand, I'm a University of Tennessee graduate and follower of UT football since my 7th grade year (1963). I love my Vols and thouroughly enjoy victories over the Gators. BUT I hate to see an otherwise exciting game be marred by officiating errors. The clock not starting is a miscarrage of the rules. The personal foul call/non call is inexplicable. It certainly appeared that the official was looking directly at both players and from what we saw on replay the penalties should have been off setting. So what happened? Only the men involved can explain it.

I must also say that since my elementary school years I have also been a big fan of Alabama football. Joe Namath, Steve Sloan and the "Snake" along with UT's Dewey "Swamp Rat" Warren were some of the people I tried to emulate in the 60's when we played back yard football. Bear Bryant has always been the standard for college coaches in my mind and heart. It bothers to hear fellow Tide followers talk of UT, SEC and NCAA conspiracies. Those officials screwed up but they didn't complete the passes on UT's last drive nor did they kick the 50 yard fieldgoal.

I hate it that the game was marred by the controversy, but I'm about as willing to give the win back to Florida as they were willing to give the 2000 game back to us that they won on the infamous "no catch".

With the offical watching the entire exchange, something is rotten when he only calls the penalty on Fla :eek: The person who started it gets away scott free :rolleyes: .

You're right, it looks bad. That's why it's inexplicable. I certainly hope that the official in question had no personal agenda going. I coached football for many years and I had to officiate a game or two now and then. 99.9 % of the officials I encountered just wanted to do the best job they could. I hope that that official just had a "brain fart" and screwed the call.

Thanks for the classy post OC, but there are a few things I have to disagree with.

First off, forget Gaffney's catch/non-catch. What happened in 2000 doesn't matter in the 20004 game. Both teams have an equal right to an impartially called game. Besides, you can make a case for the call on Gaffney because it was a bam-bam play, not so on what happened Saturday night. That official was standing a few feet away and staring right at the two players, he made no move for his flag until the UF player retaliated. Even then, he had had plenty of time to make the right call, but he already had an outcome decided in his mind and apparently was just looking for the chance to implement that outcome. Worse yet, his "goof" was compounded by the failure of the entire crew to start the clock. Amazing that six refs could all have a brain fart at the same time isn't it?

As for UT moving the ball and kicking a 50 yard FG, that's true, but if the proper call were made, they wouldn't have had the time to move the ball and the FG would've been much further away. That's assuming that UF would've failed to make a first down on the replay of third down.

The best football conference in the country deserves the best officiating. We do not have it. I agree with you, I want to see the games decided by young men giving their all for their respective universities, not paunchy middle aged guys in striped shirts.

I'm appalled by the officiating in games that I don't even really care about. Shoot, their performance in the VT/USC game was ..... Well, you get the drift.

And if Slive or Gaston one more time starts mouthing off about how many they get right I'm going to blow a gasket. That's the rule everywhere. Let the pit employee at the Jiffy Lube miss putting back in two oil pan drain plugs a week and see how long he has a job.

Time for a housecleaning.
