SEC permanently suspends Ken Williamson

  • HELLO AGAIN, Guest! We are back, live! We're still doing some troubleshooting and maintenance to fix a few remaining issues but everything looks stable now (except front page which we're working on over next day or two)

Thanks for your patience and support! MUCH appreciated! --Brett (BamaNation)

if you see any problems - please post them in the Troubleshooting board!

Wild auburn has this much pull with the sec home office. We’ve been getting jobbed nearly every big away game since 2008 it feels like. I had just assumed home team gets all the calls but now I see you can complain?? Haha They complain and people get fired. Saban complains once about lineman down field and they call every ticky tack thing on us the rest of the year as payback. Wild

This is a shot over the bow to all crews but I’m not sure how this improves the quality of officiating in the SEC.

We have the elite of the elite coaching and playing and we have 1 step above pop warner league part time refs. I know most try hard and it’s a job I would never desire at any level, but they’re amateurs where pros are needed.

McAulay is an idiot if he thinks this should start a ref revolution. Speaks more to how insular and insecure and fragile zebras are.

All these articles site the Yellowhammer News report.....and the ref on Twitter basically confirmed it was true.

I'm guessing the Autrey crew just hasn't made huge blunders so far this year and have flown under the radar. Williamson crew is the crew with the notable screw ups this year.

I still think that Autrey crew is worse than this Williamson crew. But the Gomer Pyle crew is in that grouping as well.

The good ole boy network and having each others' backs with absolutely no accountability.....

This could be the first step in getting professionally trained SEC refs, similar to NFL refs. There is just too much money involved for these crews to basically be part time refs.

I’d like to see confirmation from a more mainline source than Yellowhammer.

But assuming for the moment that Williamson is in fact effectively fired and the rest of the crew are on double-secret probation:

The call on the fumble at the goal line was so close….literally one or two frames on the film, and not indisputable even then.

Whatever it had been called on the field (TD barn or fumble returned by UGA for a TD), I think would have stood, but not been confirmed.

The true officiating mistake on that play was the premature whistle. If the play was a fumble, UGA returned it for a TD. If it wasn’t a fumble, it was TD barn.

Under no circumstances (other than an officiating error) should it have been UGA ball on the one.

Buying Kirby’s plea that he wasn’t calling time out — rather he was saying that the barn’s D was clapping to make UGA’s OL jump — was beyond ridiculous.

To me, that was an abomination of refereeing.

Then there was inconsistency in calling roughing the passer and targeting. Neither problem is new or unique to Williamson’s crew.

But on top of more high-profile shortcomings in the same game, it does add up to a mountain of errors.

Do we have broader confirmation of the disciplinary actions yet?

My favorite moment in that game though......when Williamson announced the flag on the ensuing kickoff after UGA's field goal right before half.....and he was so flustered he announced it against the kicking team, but said it was half the distance to the goal.

He was doing his best but he was beyond flustered.

Agreed. But I think he was flustered because he knew he and his crew had made an abomination of officiating a football game.

As a side note, and IF (two huge letters) the reports of disciplinary action are accurate, I bet there are some tightly cinched alimentary canals amongst the other SEC refs **cough**cough**Autry**cough**cough**

It's been confirmed by Terry McAulay. His credentials:
- I am an officiating/rules analyst. I do that for a living and have done so for 7+ years. I analyze officiating and rules.
- I work three prime time games a week: TNF, B1G Saturday Night, and SNF.
- I provide objective analysis of plays of interest regarding college and NFL rules and their application. I neither win nor lose any game I work or review nor do I care who wins or who loses any game.
- This follows 20 years of officiating in the NFL and 10 years as a college football coordinator of officiating.

Thanks so much, CA.

Regardless of who quoted him, McAulay is definitely credible, and would have contacts in the officiating community both deep and broad.

This kind of stuff is why TF is among the best forums of any kind — in no way limited to sports— on the interwebs.

I also think if it wasn’t true then the SEC Office or Head of SEC Officiating would have released a statement of denial.

There has been ample time since this story came out to do so.

IMO they are basically “confirming it” by their silence.

I honestly wonder if Williamson is well.

He's been a solid Zebra for decades; that game was a true departure from his form.
