Senior Bowl discussion

Early updates from South Practice:

  • Tebow's throws on out routes have no zip at all
  • The opinion of one scout: Riley Cooper is the complete package. Real deal. I think he's going to be moving up draft boards fast
  • Miss. St. RB Anthony Dixon showing good quickness
  • Roy Upchurch just made the catch of the day on a ball from WVUs Zac Robinson. Jumped over USF DB Nate Allen.
  • Practice for South squad has a ton of "guests" clogging things up. Lots of police too
  • Ole Miss's Dexter McCluster, who worked with the running backs yesterday, is in receiver drills. Just schooled Kentucky's Trivard Lindley. On the play, McCluster made an amazing diving catch on a nice deep ball from Tebow. They brought it back in, and did it AGAIN. This time, McCluster shook Oklahoma State's Perrish Cox out of his jock on an in route.
  • McCluster in rare form today. Just took Arenas's lunch money on a go route.
  • Nate Allen just laid out UAB QB, turned WR Joe Webb
  • Even in 7-7 drills, Tebow just tucked and ran with the ball
  • After an ugly floater that bounced off a defender's chest, Muckelroy (LB, Texas) almost picks off a poor Tebow pass
  • Eric Norwood is solid and filling the hole

If you check ESPN, Sportingnews, cbs sportsline, they all are saying cody is overweight, he's being pushed around by smaller lineman and out of shape (breathing hard).........seems they are missing the reports stated on here?

Apparently so. Everything I've read from scouts who are actually there watching the practices on their various sites has said that he's dominating his man in the 1-on-1 drills ("The Pit").

Old habits, such as his low/slow/wind-up style release, are hard to break. As a result, he's going to get scrutinized every time he does it. He simply cannot use that type of release in the NFL when he has pass rushers trying to knock the ball out of his hand.

Even more fundamental than that is the fact that Florida rarely, if ever, got him the ball from under center. His adjustment to that is clearly evident as he just fumbled another snap.

Quick wrap-up from Tuesday's South Practice:

  • From ESPN's Bruce Feldman: OK, so Terrence Cody won't win any bodybuilding contests but he just bullrushed NC State's center back five yards in a heartbeat.
  • Tim Tebow had a better day of practice today, but still throws bad passes, Tebow had a HUGE following in the stands
  • One scout's quick hits on today's practice: McCluster was the star, Tebow hasn't improved, Anthony McCoy is solid, Eric Norwood loves to hit.....
  • From Daniel Jeremiah (former head scout for Baltimore Ravens & Cleveland Browns):
    • Tebow threw it okay when he had a lot of room. However, when bodies close in, he can't get the ball out. Motion is WAY too long.
    • Lamarr Houston (UTexas) and Dan Williams (UTennessee) both flashed in 1-1s. Houston with quicks and Williams with power. Williams is climbing fast.
    • McCluster is dynamic. None of the South CBs could get a hand on him off the line. Like him better as a slot WR than a RB.
    • USC TE Anthony McCoy was very up and down. Dropped a few early but his size/speed/agility is impressive.
    • UAB QB Joe Webb has struggled with the move to WR. His hands were very hard. Sounded like a bomb went off. Not much burst either.
    • Terrance Cody flashed some inside push as a rusher. Better OL jump would set him early b/c he has no plan B.
    • Javier Arenas is a feisty, competetive nickel type but deep speed is a question
    • Lots of teams have questions about Taylor Mays ability to play in the deep half. He's late off the hash too much. No anticipation.
More comprehensive wrap-up of South's practice later tonight, but one quick nugget from one observer's interview with Cincinatti's WR/KR Mardy Ginyard, who's never at a loss of words. Ginyard said he "feels bad for the guys on the South team because of all the attention on Tim Tebow." Hilarious, but true

Final Wrap-Up of Tuesday's practice (South Squad):

  • Riley Cooper had a pretty solid day and is really starting to generate some buzz. While he dropped a couple passes during practice, he really appears to be the complete package. Cooper runs smooth routes and gets in and out of his breaks quickly. Cooper is certainly helping his cause [in Mobile] and told reporters after practice that he is officially giving up baseball.
  • The other player of the day had to be Ole Miss RB/WR Dexter McCluster. This kid can flat out play. Dexter lined up at both WR and RB throughout practice and shined at both spots. On several occasions, McCluster completely left defenders behind while running routes. He got the best of Perrish Cox, Javier Arenas and Jerome Murphy on different occasions.
  • John Jerry, the offensive lineman out of Ole Miss had a tremendous day. He just kept beating pass rushers, constantly pushing them to the ground. He clearly showed that he has the strength to handle his own in the trenches and is catching the eyes of scouts.
  • Terrence Cody is also a forced to be reckoned with. It’s almost impossible for a single blocker to move Cody out of the hole and sometimes double teams don’t even work. He’s an ideal NT in the NFL and will demand double teams on any running play. While he’s clearly out of shape, he has the talent to be dominate in the NFL if he can develop a stronger work ethic.
  • Looking toward the defensive backs, Javier Arenas stuck out in the one on one drills. Arenas made good plays on the ball while staying tight in coverage. He might be small, but he knows how to get his hands in there and break up the pass.
  • Interviews set up:
    • Jaguars: Patrick Robinson
      Vikings: Anthony Dixon
      Patriots: Darryl Sharpton, Roddrick Muckelroy
Browns: Daryl Sharpton, Roddrick Muckelroy, Leigh Tiffin, Jeff Byers, Geno Atkins, Ben Tate, Jarrett Brown, Nate Allen
      Saints: Anthony Dixon
Chargers: Eric Norwood, Cameron Sheffield, Perrish Cox
Chiefs: George Selvie, Jarrett Brown (also saw them having a sit down with Gilyard at hotel later)
      Redskins: Perrish Cox
      49ers: Perrish Cox
Rams: Matt Dodge, Eric Norwood, Dan Williams
      Ravens: Matt Dodge, Eric Norwood
      Titans: Jerome Murphy, Taylor Mays
      Raiders: Daryl Sharpton, Eric Norwood
      Cowboys: Ben tate
Eagles: Jeremy Williams, Nate Allen, Dan Williams, Jarrett Brown
  • Late addition to the roster is Thomas Welch of Vandy. He is 6'7" 310 lbs and has played both left and right tackle

Seems the sportscasters are now on the same page. More then one are now reporting that Cody although overweight, is having his way with the O linemen.

Not too many years ago, a 300lb lineman got the "wow"s when people looked at the rosters. Now there are many to be found on even the small college teams. How times have changed.

Wonder if the 400lb linemen will become as ubiquitous as the 300 pounders. Has to be a point where gravity trumps strength in the human body.....maybe.

Wow! Thanks for the updates. Any info on Peek?

Notes on Peek and Upchurch from yesterday's practice:

Colin Peek (Alabama): Peek made good catches in coverage and ran disciplined routes to get enough separation to make a play on the ball. However, he lacks the speed and burst of tight ends that will be an integral part of the average NFL passing game. He will be a valued player on a roster because he can block and catch, but he won’t be a huge weapon.

Roy Upchurch
(Alabama) runs hard, but lacks the lower body strength to pick up much yardage after contact. I did like the way he kept his feet moving after initial contact, but he needs to bulk up if he wants to break tackles easier. His footwork is good but not great, and he doesn’t get to the hole fast enough from what I saw today.
