Should LSU int been ruled illegal touching?

Didn't the defender step out of bounds and then int the pass, in the 3rd quarter ( i think)? If so isn't that illegal touching like the controversial call of the Ole miss game last year, or i'm i mistaken?

If I'm not mistaken, I believe that the rule only applies to the offensive player. I believe the defensive player can go out of bounds and still be the first to touch the ball. Maybe someone else can confirm this.

I think that's right.

The defensive player can go out of bounds and come back in and touch the ball first, but the offensive player must have either been forced out, or the ball must be first tipped.

Eligibility Lost by Going Out of Bounds
ARTICLE 4. No eligible offensive receiver who goes out of bounds during a
down shall touch a legal forward pass in the field of play or end zones or while
airborne until it has been touched by an opponent or official (A.R. 7-3-4-I-III).
Exception: This does not apply to an eligible offensive player who attempts to
return inbounds immediately after being blocked out of bounds by an opponent
(A.R. 7-3-4-IV).
PENALTY—Loss of down at the previous spot [S16 and S9].

Straight out of the rule book.

There are some SEC referees on this board who can clarify but I believe the rules are silent on the defensive player. IMO, that means there is nothing which prohibits a defensive player from going out of bounds.

The rule specifies eligible offensive receivers. All defensive players are eligible to intercept a ball. The rule applies only to offensive players.

I believe Maze had already been "forced" out of bounds, so he couldn't have caught the ball anyway, if its the play I'm thinking of.

If on offensive eligible receiver is "forced" out of bounds by a defensive player, he can still be the first to touch the ball. It is only when they go OB by their own mistake and touch the ball first is it a penalty

We really should not be running that play with Maze. You need a bigger WR (Julio, McCoy, Stover) running that play. Maze is just too small to be doing that route.

I agree. I posted the same a couple of days ago. I don't know what JPW was thinking when he attempted that pass to Maze, who had no chance to out-battle the much larger safety for the ball...
