Shula's Steakhouse-Birmingham

Remember that it's not owned by the Shulas - it's a franchise. When the owners are no longer getting any mileage out of the Shula tag, you can bet they will be (probably already are) looking around for a new name. My complaint was that the food was mediocre, pricey, and the service really sucked. I poked around and found that these are the complaints across the country. If you eaten in the B'ham Shulas, search and look at some review of the one in NYC. It'll look familiar...

Solution, if you've got a little money burning a hole:

Go to the Butcher Block, or any good butcher shop. Get a couple of Strips. Take them home and just before you put them on the grill, cover in Worchestershire or Dales, butter one side and crushed pepper on the same side. Zap it on the high heat briefly, then move it to medium heat and cook until medium rare or medium. Have some fresh mushrooms sautee in Worchestershire as the steaks cook.

Pop the cork on a Malbec from Jean Bousquet, enjoy a glass as the steak cooks, enjoy a glass with the meal, then polish the bottle off after dinner.

If you love shrimp as much as I do, pick up a pound or two of shrimp from the Butcher Block and cook them in foil alongside the steaks in Olive Oil and butter; use a splash of Mrs. Dash if you like.

It's all easy, and not terribly expensive; and you don't have to leave the house once you get done eating and drinking!

Now that Mike Shula is gone, do you think that Shula's Steakhouse in B'ham will remain?

After all of the negative comments daddy Don had to say about Alabama, I think all Bama fans should not eat there any more. That would prob. do a little damage to the business. Don't you think? LOL:biggrin:

From what I've heard - and read here - they've done most of the damage to themselves, nothing to do with Daddy Don's comments. I think they're out-classed by the competition...

there hasn't been one time i viewed this thread when it didn't make me want to eat a steak. can it be stickied to page 2?

Actually, I far prefer the pinot noir varietal over malbec, which is a syrah variant. Remember though, that the Shulas only promise "certified Angus beef." In real terms, this means only "I promise the beeve was black, really." The Ruth Chris's is prime beef, which you can't buy at your local super market. That's part of the difference. I swear, if there's one more post on this thread, I'm evacuating it to Rich's "grillin" forum... :D

Plus, they have a special oven designed for them to cook the steaks to perfection. Best steakhouse in the US. Check please!

Let me post in it before you move it, Earle.;)

I've eaten at Shula's, Ruths Chris, and Charley's here in Tampa. While I won't say I've ever had a bad meal at any of them, Charley's crushes the others. A much better steak than the others.

All this steak talk is making me hungry!! I have ate at Shula's and thought it was ok. The past few times I have been to Ruth's Chris I thought it sucked... I liked Flemmings but the one in Dallas went out of business several years ago.

I love going to our local meat market that sells USDA Prime Beef. Of course I thought my wife was going to shoot me when she found out I spent $31.95 per pound for some Ribeyes a few weeks ago.

Ruth's Chris does a good steak, better than most. Morton's Steak house is as good or better. Then there are the exceptional steak houses that aren't in B'ham or Tuscaloosa.

Well, if you guys insist. ;)

Frankly, Don Shula has to be one of the dumbest businessmen ever to get on national TV and rip Bama when he has a business in B'ham...Even if it is a franchisee deal. If I were the franchise owner, I would take legal action against Shula for hurting / killing my business.

I ate at Ruth's in Atlanta with Brett last year. One of the best steaks I ever ate. Had a good rub of spices.
