Link: SNL video makes fun of Alabama football academics

  • HELLO AGAIN, Guest! We are back, live! We're still doing some troubleshooting and maintenance to fix a few remaining issues but everything looks stable now (except front page which we're working on over next day or two)

Thanks for your patience and support! MUCH appreciated! --Brett (BamaNation)

if you see any problems - please post them in the Troubleshooting board!

I have a good sense of humor, and I can take a rib......but I just didn't think it was that funny. Cena did a good job trying to play right into the stereotype, but the material was blah.

(I always thought it funny when folks would say athletes took classes like Underwater Basket Weaving....I can't even weave a basket OUT of water.....now my favorite was Advanced Pencil Sharpening).

Well, that's because the water softens up the reeds :D

I thought it was funny as all get out. Some people, no matter how hard they try, just don't have a personality or a sense of humor. Be your good self and don't worry about em.

It's not that those that find this unfunny "doesn't have a personality or sense of humor", that's being pretty harsh. What I find funny you might not find funny and that doesn't mean I'll come out and try to tell you that you don't have a sense of humor. That's like a kid pitching a fit because everyone doesn't like his favorite movie, because not everyone will think that way. My favorite comedian was Richard Pryor, not everyone likes his style (like my Mother) but I'm not going to sit here and try to tell her to "get a sense or humor" just because she doesn't agree with me. Like I say, Daniel Tosh has had good stuff about Bama in the past (some not so funny) so it's simply NOT the fact anyone is taking shots at Bama. You need to understand not everyone finds it funny just because you do.

I understand completely. What is funny to some is not funny to others. FWIW...Tosh is the least funny person to me since Kathy Griffin.

And nothing wrong with that. Like I said to 'Sip, what you find funny I might not find funny and vice versa. And nothing wrong with that. But unlike 'Sip I'm not going to sit here and take shots at you because you "get it".

It wasn't super funny but I didn't mind it and wasn't offended in the least. Just like I don't mind when Daniel Tosh throws jabs Alabama's way (he has Alabama grads as writers on his staff that are usually involved).

Every generation seems to think SNL isn't as funny as when their favorite cast was there. I'm the same way except mine was Chris Farley, Norm MacDonald, etc. rather than Chevy, Dan Aykroyd, and so on. It had gotten pretty bad for a while in the 2000s but some of the skits from the past year or two have been pretty funny. I don't enjoy the show enough to watch it every Saturday but I usually skim the best skits on Youtube.

Same here. I thought the skit was bland as the "dumb jock" has been played to death just like "dumb Alabama hicks" has as well.

As for the cast I agree that was probably my favorite cast as well, but I did like the prior generation of cast members in the early 80's as well as I grew up with a brother 9 years older than me watching it so I caught it at times as well as I got older. But my favorite was those same guys you mentioned. I'm the same way with the skits, matter of fact one of my favorites of all time was showed this year when Dave Chappelle hosted and did The Walking Dead with his old Chappelle's Show characters he done. Just like this past weekend with the Jeopardy-like skit where Charles Barkley hosted a Jeopardy show about saving money that had Gronk, Conor McGregor and John Daly.

Whether SNL meant it or not, I think it is a compliment to Alabama football as being the premier program in college football.

So no, it wouldn't have been as meaningful or relevant to have anybody else play the punch line...especially not Auburn or just some other power 5 school.

Besides that, where would they have found an Barner jersey and hat in NYC???

Seems like some of you just want to tell SNL "to get off your lawn".

It wasn't the best sketch by far. However, it was cool seeing Cena wearing a Bama jersey on national tv and there is the old adage that there is no such thing as bad press.

It's been years since I've actually watched SNL, it used to be a great show, always watched it every Saturday Night growing up before I got a car & drivers license..Back when Chris Farley, David Spade, Chris Rock, Jim Carrey, Adam Sandler, & Rob Schneider were part of the cast, it was "Must See TV"..As they all left the show their replacements just wasn't as funny, I quit watching the show, I honestly thought the show was cancelled years ago & this video simply reminds me why I gave up on SNL years ago..

Oh well..If folks aren't talking down to ya or making fun of you, to make themselves feel better, about the utter "Bama Domination" that's been happening during "The Processing" of college football the last 10yrs..If all that wasn't happening we wouldn't be winning on the football field..I'd much much much rather be 'Hated on than to be liked in college football..

Who are those guys? And what are you doing on my lawn?

Just a stereotypical "dumb jock" skit because they had a pro wrestler hosting -- Alabama is only mentioned because they're the No. 1 team at the moment, could have easily been any school (well, not Stanford I'd guess, but almost any school.) Not offensive but not funny either.

I flunked that class...Twice! I just use a pen now.

I did not find it funny, but I am certainly not their target audience. I probably would have seen its humor when I was younger.

I just saw an exerpt. It's interesting how some tout their "courage" in pointing out supposedly unpopular truths, but in reality they are cowardly. Would they ever show a "dumb" college football player from Mich, and they do exist ? And if it's an Alabama player, why is he white, since Bama has ~4 white players in it's top 44 ? Dumb white male portrayals are acceptable, dumb black ones are not. SNL is both dishonest and gutless. The white male, especially Southern, is the primary demo that is still fair game, to almost universal applause.

And no, I don't really care. I heard about this skit but never even bothered to view it. It was shown on a show I was watching. No big deal - I don't care what the prevailing culture thinks, except as a reflection of its decline. But the hypocrisy is amusing and amazing.
