Sources: Charlie Strong joins Nick Saban's staff at Alabama

Charlie Strong was a head coach for 10 years. He lost at least 6 games 8 out of 10 years. I'm not sure he's a good head coach.

He hasn't been a DC in quite a while, but I would be happy with him on staff.

I tend to agree that he’s a better DC than HC. And there’s no shame in that.

JMHO, but I think Alabama’s best OC of all time was Homer Smith...who was unsuccessful as a HC at a few stops. Not an Alabama OC, but similar story for Norm Chow. For the OFC, there’s Ken Donahue and Bill Oliver on the defensive side. Today, there’s Brent Venables.

Strong can make low seven figures a year, after collecting a couple of big severance packages, do what he’s really good at, have a family life, go out in public and not be bothered nearly as much, not have the hassles of alumni or boosters or PR, not have the pressure of a whole staff and all their families depending on you, and still have (1) more money than he can spend, and (2) his family set for multiple generations.

Not a bad gig.

I was never sold on him as a head coach. In fact I questioned the hire by Texas, some other posters seemed sold on him as a head coach, I never was.

Having said that, I also firmly believe that most coordinators who make it to head coach at a major program were doing something right to get that shot. I'd love to have him around Alabama football in some capacity.

Homer worked wonders with the offense he had

You should have been living here when that whole thing went down. It was high comedy.

They went from "We Got Saban" to "What The....." in one motion. And I'm sure you recall Red McCombs - after Strong was hired - saying Strong would make a great DC and thinking they could still hire Saban or another big name.

Octogenarian billionaires live in an alternate reality - just like unemployed Texas fans do.

Agreed, and I think he carries a huge chip on his shoulder that nobody can knock off.
I'd love to see him as an analyst to help CPG out and go from there...

The whole thing was just so very.... University of Texas.

They fire one of their best coaches of all time, who admittedly was not performing up to expectations, and their entire plan seemed to be "may be we can get Saban".

Fast forward, and not only have they only had one good season (and four times as many sub 8 win seasons as Mack's entire tenure) since then, but ironically Mack had only one less win than them last year, at the mighty University of North Carolina.

They basically divorced their old reliable wife who had let herself go and planned on hooking up with the sleeker looking young model simply because they had money. Problem for Texas, of course, was her current squeeze already had money, too.

Actually, it was all but a done deal. They had gone through their rationalization of not being appreciated enough and had voiced it. (opinion) At the time, I had an excellent source in Sexton's office. I won't indicate as to the present, but the one inhibiting me from saying much then is deceased. All the house-hunting in Austin rumors were based in fact. Eventually, it became obvious that CNS's demands for lack of interference could not be met, as they had been at LSU and Bama. There's a lot of difference between Louisiana and Alabama millionaires and, as you say, Texas billionaires. When that could not be guaranteed, rethinking about new roots, rebuilding, started. The rest is history known to all...

Allow me to speculate, but..................

CNS has been around far too long to realistically expect those demands would be met at Bevo U. Could be they felt a lot of us needed to have the daylights scared out of us in order to put the "underappreciated" crap to rest.

BTW..........someone has already amended CCS's Wikipedia page to indicate his new position. Probably just a prank since the guy who started it graduated from Bama.
